The holy spirit's importance
1. THE HOLY SPIRIT'S IMPORTANCE
EDITED BY GLENN PEASE
The Importance of the Holy Spirit
What a tragedy, that so many Christians know very little about the
Holy Spirit or hardly pay attention to Who He is and what His place is
in the lives of God's people. Some refer to Him as the "Third Person" of
the Trinity, as though He is the lesser of the Three. Not so.
There is equality in the Holy Trinity.
The Holy Spirit is One of the Three Persons of the Godhead, – a
compound Unity – in the Trinity of God.
1. God the Father is the Source of life and of all that has been
divinely planned and created.
2. He is the Originator of our salvation and our future. He is the
Heavenly Administrator.
3. God the Son is the Divine Alphabet–the "Alpha and Omega"
(Rev. 1:11), the "Word" (Jn. 1:1).
4. He reveals what the Father determines, and makes the Father's
will clear. He is the exact expression of the Father (Jn. 14:9; Col.
1:15).
5. God the Holy Spirit is the Energizer of the Word spoken by the
Son.
6. He is the Executor, the One Who brings God's plan to reality and
fulfillment. The Holy Spirit was and is present at every Divine
function.
From eternity past
• --"In the beginning" (Gen. 1:1,2), to the creation of the cosmos,
and of man;
• -- to the establishment of Israel as a nation;
• -- to the birth, death and resurrection of Jesus;
• -- to the formation of the Church at Pentecost, and during its
growth and development over the past 2000 years. He was there
2. all the time.
He is still with the Church and will continue to be.
• -- through the Rapture and the 1000 year reign of the King of
Kings on earth,
• -- on into eternity of the future. The Holy Spirit is the KEY to our
success.
The Holy Spirit is all important to us – TODAY!
1. This was emphasized by Jesus: "I must go, so He can come" (Jn.
16:7)
2. The Spirit's work in and through us is described in John -- chaps. 14-
16.
3. Even Jesus submitted to the Holy Spirit during His ministry on earth.
–"Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit."..."The Spirit of the Lord is
upon Me, because He hath anointed Me" (Lk.4:14, 18).
4. Jesus told His disciples, "I will send Him unto you" (Jn. 16:7). "He
dwelleth with you, and shall be in you" (Jn. 14:17). "Tarry until...
(Lk.24:).
The Holy Spirit is needed in ALL of our human experiences.
(He is sent to develop the Church – God's prized jewel)
7. Throughout the LIFE of the Christian. The Spirit breathes life
and energy into us, even as He did to the lifeless form of Adam.
(Gen. 2:7). It is the Holy Spirit who imparts life to us and makes
us "new creatures in Christ" (Jn. 3:5; 2 Cor. 5:17).
8. In the GROWTH of the Christian.
9. The believer must not remain a spiritual infant, "Grow in grace"
(2 Pet. 3:18; 1 Pet.2:2; Eph. 4:13) The Spirit will lead us to
spiritual maturity so that our life becomes an asset to the
Kingdom of God.
10. In the WORK of the Christian.
11. Christians have an obligation and responsibility to God. "Seek ye
first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness" (Mt. 6:33). We
are to be "workers together" with Him in behalf of the Kingdom.
Jesus told His disciples "Go" – "Be My witnesses." Our efforts
apart from the power and anointing of the Holy Spirit are
fruitless. Our education and varied programs, etc., may entertain
3. and attract, but will not produce eternal results. The Spirit
energizes us. He grants spiritual "gifts"–abilities (1 Cor.12). He
gives revelations, produces "fruit" - character such as love, joy,
peace, long-suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith (Gal. 5:22).
12. In the BATTLE of the Christian.
13. Paul reminds us that "We wrestle not against flesh and blood, but
against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the
darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high
places" (Eph. 6:12). The enemy is not your normal human foe.
The Bible characterizes him as "a roaring lion," "the serpent,"
"the dragon," " thief," " murderer." We are no match for him.
Even Michael the archangel was careful when "contending with
the devil...about the body of Moses" did not dare to bring a
slanderous accusation against him, but said, "the Lord rebuke
you." (Jude 9).
14. But we are encouraged to resist and rebuke the devil. HOW? "By
My Spirit, saith the Lord." Samson was a ordinary mortal, but
what a powerhouse he became when "The Spirit of the Lord came
upon him" (Judges 14:6). The same was true of the Lord's
Apostles after the Day of Pentecost. The Spirit gives us faith,
wisdom, courage, strength. "My brethren, be strong in the Lord ,
and in the power of His might" (Eph. 6:10). "Put on the whole
armor of God" (Eph.6:11-18). This comes from the Holy Spirit.
15. Victory is assured when the Holy Spirit is involved in our life.
Satan is no match for God, –and the Holy Spirit is GOD. "If the
Spirit of Him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, He
that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your
mortal bodies by His Spirit that dwelleth in you" (Rom. 8:11).
Apart from the Spirit's help, all of our "might" and natural
abilities, can never overcome the enemy. "You shall receive power
after the Holy Spirit comes on you" (Acts 1:8).
Conclusion: "By MY Spirit, saith The Lord" – not in any other way.
16. We will need Him our entire life; for our spiritual growth, for our
successful work, for victorious warfare against the enemy, and for
a glorious completion of our responsibilities to God.
17. We will need the Spirit's help. "Tarry until ye be endued with
power from on high."
4. 18. "Be filled with the Spirit" "The people that know their God shall
be strong and do exploits" (Dan. 11:32). "They that wait upon the
Lord shall renew their strength" (Isa. 40:31).
19. SEEK HIM DAILY!

“You foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you?” (Galatians 3:1)
Don’t you love how kind and gentle Paul’s letters are?
What was it that got the apostle so worked up? It was because the
Galatians had the wrong idea about the importance of the Holy Spirit.
They understood the role that the Spirit played in their conversion, but
they were missing out on His role as Helper in the ongoing life of a
believer. Their new life in Christ had begun by responding to the Holy
Spirit through faith, but they were now trying to maintain it by human
effort, rather than relying on Him.
Many Christians today get caught in the same trap as the Galatians: we
forget why the Holy Spirit is so important. If we want to avoid being
“foolish Galatians,” we need to respond to the Holy Spirit and the way
He moves in our lives.
Here are five key roles that the Holy Spirit plays.
1. He guides you into Jesus’ truth
Jesus was clear on the importance of the Holy Spirit: “But when He, the
Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth... He will
glorify Me because it is from Me that He will receive what He will make
known to you” (John 16:13-14). Do you want to know what Jesus is
saying to you as you journey through this life? Do you want to be able to
hear God’s voice as you read through the pages of the Bible? It is the
Holy Spirit, the Spirit of Truth, who communicates all of that to you.
2. He directs your steps
The Holy Spirit not only speaks the words of Jesus to you, but He
actually is the one who leads and directs your steps into the abundant
5. life that Jesus promised. Paul wrote, “You, however, are controlled not
by the sinful nature but by the Spirit…. And if the Spirit of Him who
raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, He who raised Christ from
the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit, who
lives in You” (Romans 8:9, 11). The Holy Spirit is the conduit of life
from God into your heart. He is the one who controls your thoughts,
attitudes, words, and actions as you follow His leading. He will direct
your steps through all the complicated paths of life and keep you from
sin. That is abundant life!
3. He gives you spiritual gifts
The Holy Spirit is also the one who gives spiritual gifts to all followers of
Jesus so that we all can play our role in the Body of Christ. Paul gave us
a sampling of those gifts in his first letter to the Corinthian church:
“Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the
common good. To one there is given through the Spirit a message of
wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same
Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by
that one Spirit, to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to
another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different
kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues. All
these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them
to each one, just as he determines” (1 Corinthians 12:7-11).
It is through these gifts of the Spirit that we function best as the
Church, and it is through these gifts that we are able to proclaim the
power of Jesus to people who desperately need to know our Savior.
4. He empowers you to proclaim
In Acts, Luke recalls over and over the crucial role the Holy Spirit
played in the early Church’s proclamation of the Gospel. When Peter
and John stood accused before powerful leaders, Luke reported that
Peter was filled with the Holy Spirit and boldly proclaimed that Jesus
Christ of Nazareth, the One they had crucified, was the only way to
salvation (Acts 4:5-12). This is the same Peter who only two months
earlier had denied Jesus. And now, standing in the very place where
Jesus had been condemned, Peter accused these religious elite that they
had crucified the Messiah. That new boldness could only be possible
through the empowering of the Holy Spirit.
5. He guarantees your hope of heaven
6. The Holy Spirit is also important because He is the guarantee of your
inheritance in heaven. “When you believed, you were marked in Him
with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our
inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession”
(Ephesians 1:13-14). Satan wants to destroy your hope and tries to get
you to doubt your Savior’s love. But the Spirit’s leading, teaching,
gifting, and proclaiming is proof that you belong to God forever.
So don’t let anyone “bewitch” you. The Holy Spirit is of vital
importance in your life. It is through Him that the character of Christ is
revealed in you: “The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance,
kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against
such things there is no law… . Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in
step with the Spirit” (Galatians 5:22-23, 25).
Scripture: Acts 8:14-25, Acts 8:9-25
Denomination: Evangelical/Non-Denominational
Summary: Why were Peter, John and Paul so eager to pray for people
to receive the Holy Spirit? This answer the Question: Why is the Spirit
so important.
The importance of the Holy Spirit
A. Background:
Acts 8:9-13
Here we found the working of the Holy Spirit through a man that was
full of FAITH and the HOLY Spirit Acts 6:5
· God is using him mightily.
· Multitudes listen to him.
· Miracles were done and then even the GREAT POWER V10 , Simon,
believed.
· Notice in verse 13 that Simon follows Philip and notice all the miracles.
Let’s continue and learn God’s Word today for our souls.
B. V14 – 17
14 Now when the apostles who were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria
had received the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them, 15who,
when they had come down, prayed for them that they might receive the
Holy Spirit. 16For as yet He had fallen upon none of them. They had
only been baptised in the name of the Lord Jesus. 17Then they laid
7. hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.
· The news of Samaria receiving the Word of God reached the Apostles
ears and they sent Peter and John to go and assist Phillip.
· Important to know that people must first receive the Gospel (Word of
God) before the rest can follow.
· The Word of God is essential to our believe.
· You can’t claim that you received the Holy Spirit but don’t believe the
Word of God.
· The Spirit and the Word of God goes together.
They came prayed for them V15 and then laid their hands on them and
they received the Holy Spirit.
A good Question will be:
Why is the Holy Spirit then so important?
I mean listen to Paul in Acts 19:2 .
Did You receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?
Why is the Holy Spirit then so important?
Let me tell you why:
1. He is part of the Trinity. 1 John 5
7For there are three that bear witness in heaven: the Father, the Word,
and the Holy Spirit; and these three are one.
2. He is our Helper. (Comforter) John 14:16
16And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that
He may abide with you forever--
We need the Holy Spirit every second of the day.
3. He’s the Spirit of truth. John14:17
17the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither
sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you
and will be in you.
Who will:
4. He’s our teacher. John14:25
26But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My
name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all
things that I said to you.
8. How many times have read a part didn’t understand it at first then at
once you got it.
5. He gives us Peace . John 14:26
27Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives
do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.
6. He convicts us. John 16:8
8And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of
righteousness, and of judgment:
Voice in head say do wrong.
7. He will tell us about things that will come John 16:13-14
13However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you
into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever
He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. 14He will
glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you. 15All
things that the Father has are Mine. Therefore I said that He will take
of Mine and declare it to you
Now it is IMPORTANT to notice that Peter and John didn’t give the
Spirit, God did.
John 14:16
and He will give you another Helper
Man is but a mere instrument that God used here.
V17 . 17Then they laid hands on them, and they received the Holy
Spirit.
C. So they received the Spirit. All but one … Simon… The sorcerer
V18And when Simon saw that through the laying on of the apostles’
hands the Holy Spirit was given, he offered them money,
19saying, "Give me this power also, that anyone on whom I lay hands
may receive the Holy Spirit."
· Simon is making the same mistake that thousands today are making:
· They look at God’s power humanly (Naturally)
o This is what Paul was talking about in I Cor 2:14
14 But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God,
for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are
9. spiritually discerned.
He says: "Give me this power also, that anyone on whom I lay hands
may receive the Holy Spirit."
I identify at least two errors here that we should beware of:
I. he offered them money
He tried to buy something that has no price on it.
It’s a gift, for free…
Isaiah 55:1-3
“Ho! Everyone who thirsts, Come to the waters; And you who have no
money,
Come, buy and eat. Yes, come, buy wine and milk Without money and
without price. 2 Why do you spend money for what is not bread, And
your wages for what does not satisfy? Listen carefully to Me, and eat
what is good, And let your soul delight itself in abundance. 3 Incline
your ear, and come to Me. Hear, and your soul shall live; And I will
make an everlasting covenant with you
And Again Jesus on the last day of the feast in John 7:37-39 said:
37 On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out,
saying, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. 38 He who
believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers
of living water.” 39 But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those
believing in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given,
because Jesus was not yet glorified.
Simon offered money
What are you offering today?
Some still offer money – they say I’ll be alright with my sinful life as
long as I give money.
Others give their lives – being religiously busy but far from God.
II. 2 nd He was in it for personal gain…
Give me this power also, that anyone on whom I lay hands
Spirit of greed (Covetousness)
I want to be like you!

D. Let’s see what Peter thinks about this:
20But Peter said to him, "Your money perish with you, because you
thought that the gift of God could be purchased with money! 21You
have neither part nor portion in this matter, for your heart is not right
in the sight of God. 22Repent therefore of this your wickedness, and
pray God if perhaps the thought of your heart may be forgiven you.
23For I see that you are poisoned by bitterness and bound by iniquity."
Peter identifies problem.
V23 I see that you are poisoned by bitterness and bound by iniquity.
See Simon believed that Jesus was Lord but still had a troubled heart..
See what James says in James 2:19
You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons
believe--and tremble!
Peter says Repent! V22
22Repent therefore of this your wickedness, and pray God if perhaps
the thought of your heart may be forgiven you
24Then Simon answered and said, "Pray to the Lord for me, that none
of the things which you have spoken may come upon me."
25So when they had testified and preached the word of the Lord, they
returned to Jerusalem, preaching the gospel in many villages of the
Samaritans.
"When compared with God the Father and the works of the Son Jesus
on the cross people do not know as much about the Holy Spirit which
has led some to question the importance of the Holy Spirit.
The Bible teaches that the origin of all divine work begins with the
Father, carried out by the Son Jesus and brought into its fruit /
completion by the works of the Holy Spirit.
The below list details a set of things that we would not have had without
the works of the Holy Spirit as highlighted in the Bible.
There would be no universe.
11. There would be no salvation without the work of the Holy Spirits within
us:
There would be no Bible:
We would not have the gifts attributed to us in the book of Corinthians.
There would be no Church:
There would be no conviction of the sins in the hearts of people leading
to repentance back to God.
In conclusion, having a helper that lives within us should be the most
comforting thing for every believer and we should not be taking the
works of the Holy Spirit for granted.
Instead, we should realize and acknowledge His presence in our lives
and ask Him to be our guide and counsellor.UNKNOWN

Why is the Holy Spirit so important?
Why not just focus on just God the Father and God the Son? Are not
the Father’s love and the salvation we have in Jesus Christ the really
important parts of the Gospel? Yes, that is right.
The importance of the Holy Spirit is found when we ask another
question, “How does the love of God the Father expressed in Jesus
Christ become experienced and real in our own life?”
That’s where we come to the role of the Holy Spirit.
This is revealed to us in what Jesus says the Holy Spirit will do:
But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth.
He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he
will tell you what is yet to come. He will bring glory to me by taking
from what is mine and making it known to you. All that belongs to the
Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will take from what is mine
and make it known to you. (John 16:13-15 NIV)
John Calvin puts it like this:
“First we must understand that as long as Christ remains outside of us,
12. and we are separated from him, all that he has suffered and done for
the salvation of the human race remains useless and of no value for us.”
The way that we enter in and are connected to Jesus Christ is through
the agency of the Holy Spirit.
Calvin calls the Holy Spirit:
“The bond by which Christ effectually unites us to Himself.”
(John Calvin Institutes ,Book 3, Chapter I, sec. 1 pp. 537- 538)
The Holy Spirit then is our link to the Father and the Son!
The Holy Spirit’s job is to make real in our lives all that Jesus has won
for us on the Cross.
Through the Holy Spirit, Jesus becomes for us the WAY, the TRUTH
and the LIFE and the only way to God the Father.
While the Holy Spirit does this linking to Jesus’ work whether we
acknowledge His role or not, I have found that the Holy Spirit is calling
us to be partners with Him in this work.
This is especially true as we move beyond ourselves and into the great
task of making disciples of Jesus. When the Church does not
acknowledge or appreciate the work of the Holy Spirit we will be left
out of all the blessing and adventure of being His co workers. When this
happens, the Holy Spirit will have to work around us, or in spite of us,
instead of His ideal of working with us.
And when we work with the Holy Spirit. Now that is when things really
get exciting! We will find ourselves sharing in Jesus’ ministry of healing,
bringing people to salvation, overcoming Satan’s kingdom, and
advancing the Kingdom of God. In short, really making a difference in
the world for the glory of God.
BILLY GRAHAM
Q:
I understand why God is important, and I understand why Jesus is
important, but what about the Holy Spirit? Where does it fit into my
faith? It's all some people talk about, it seems, but I'm not sure what
I'm supposed to believe about it.
13. A:
The Holy Spirit is God Himself, as He works in the world and in our
hearts today to accomplish His purposes. (This, incidentally, is why we
should refer to the Holy Spirit in personal terms—not as “it” but as
“Him”).
In other words, just as Jesus was fully God, as well as fully man when
He lived on earth, so the Holy Spirit is fully God as He works today.
Jesus promised His disciples that after He returned to heaven, the Holy
Spirit would come to take His place. He said, “I will ask the Father, and
he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever—the Spirit of
truth” (John 14:16-17).
Because He is God, the Holy Spirit is eternal and all-powerful, and He is
everywhere. But when we come to Christ and commit our lives to Him,
the Spirit also comes to live within us. In fact, before we ever come to
Jesus, He is already at work in our hearts, convicting us of our sins and
convincing us of the truth of the Gospel.
Thank God that He has not abandoned you, but that He is present
within you by His Spirit. Ask Him to guide you when you pray, and also
to give you wisdom when you have decisions to make. Ask Him also to
help you read the Bible and apply it to your life, and to change you into
the person God wants you to be. Most of all, ask Him to help you point
others to Jesus.
Why do we need the Holy Spirit?
The Holy Spirit is one of the most misunderstood subjects in the Bible.
Many people have this thought that the Holy Spirit is a force or a ghost
type of mystical presence. However, the Bible tells us that the Holy
Spirit is the third person of the trinity and often refers to Him as He. So
like the Father and the Son, the Holy Spirit is a person and has
personality, a will and emotions.
The Holy Spirit can be especially confusing for the new believer. When
speaking to a new Christian it is not uncommon for them to ask, “Why
do I need the Holy Spirit when I already believe in Jesus?” We can
answer this question by looking at the Bible and seeing a number of
important roles that Holy Spirit plays in the life of the Christian. In this
14. article I want to look at five of the major ones that are helpful for the
new Christian to learn.
1. We need the Holy Spirit because Jesus promised to send another one
like Him
In John chapters 15 and 16 we see that Jesus told the disciples that after
He returned to the Father He would send another Counsellor (John
15:26, John 16:5-7). When Jesus said that He would send ‘another
counsellor’, the word ‘another’ here means ‘another of the same kind’.
Jesus was saying that all that He had been to them the Spirit would
continue to be once he had returned to the Father. I believe it is
important for us as Christians to understand this role of the Holy Spirit.
While we trust Jesus for our salvation, it is the Holy Spirit who is our
ever present help, comfort and counsellor today in the same way Jesus
was to the disciples two thousand years ago.
2. We need the Holy Spirit because He teaches us and illuminates
Scripture
The Bible tells us that the Holy Spirit teaches us and reveals the truth of
Scripture (John 14:26, 1 Corinthians 2:10-14). This teaching and
revealing work of the Holy Spirit is often described as Illumination.
Illumination does not concern the impartation of new knowledge, but a
clarification of the text as it stands revealed and inspired by God. I
believe that it is especially important for the new Christian to
understand this teaching and illumination role of the Holy Spirit
because the Bible makes it clear to understand the “deep things of God”
we need the wisdom, teaching and illumination of the Holy Spirit (1
Corinthians 2:6-16).
3. We need the Holy Spirit because He assures us we belong to God
The Bible tells us that as soon as we put our faith and trust in Jesus
Christ we are sealed by the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 1:13). A seal is a
symbol of a finished transaction, of ownership and of security. Because
we are sealed by the Holy Spirit, we can be assured of our salvation. In
Romans 8:16 we see that the Holy Spirit also testifies with our spirit
that we are God’s children and Ephesians 4:30 assures us that we are
sealed until the day of redemption. Understanding that we are sealed by
the Holy Spirit and assured of our salvation is very important for the
new Christian, as they are often prone to doubts and uncertainty about
the decision they have made.
4. We need the Holy Spirit because He makes us more Christ-like
15. The Bible tells us that as Christians we are being transformed into
likeness of Christ by the Holy Spirit (2 Corinthians 3:18). When a
person becomes born again, he is sanctified or set apart for God. This
happens only once, but sanctification is also a daily process for the rest
of one’s life. To achieve this work the Holy Spirit indwells the believer
(Romans 8:11) and works in their life to produce the fruit of the Spirit
(Galatians 5:22-23). I believe as Christians it important to realise that as
we submit every area of our lives to the indwelling Holy Spirit, we allow
Him to work in us to progressively reflect the character of Christ. This
is what God intended for humankind when He originally created us.
5. We need the Holy Spirit because He equips us for service
The Bible tells us that the Holy Spirit equips us for service with gifts
and empowers us to be Christ’s witnesses (1 Corinthians 12:4-11, Acts
1:8). The Holy Spirit equips us to serve God by imparting His gifts,
directing our ministry and anointing us with His power. For the new
Christian it is vital to understand that while we have been called to
serve God and be Christ’s witnesses, we have not been called to do this
alone. We have been equipped by the Holy Spirit with gifts to undertake
God’s work and we are empowered with the Holy Spirit’s power to be
Christ’s witnesses.
Conclusion
In this article I have listed five things that answer the question, “Why
do I need the Holy Spirit when I already believe in Jesus?” These
include we need the Holy Spirit because Jesus promised He would come,
that we need Him to illuminate and help us to understand Scripture, to
make us more Christ-like through the sanctification process and that
the Holy Spirit equips us for service. I also looked at how that Holy
Spirit assures us we belong to God because He is God’s seal of
ownership on us.

Why is the Holy Spirit so important in the life of a Christian?

I’ll turn to the very basic reason, as described by the blessed Doctor
Martin Luther of Reformation fame. Commenting on the third article
of the Creed, about the Holy Spirit, he writes, “I believe that I by my
own strength cannot believe in my Lord Jesus Christ nor come to Him,
but the Holy Spirit has called me by the Gospel….”
It’s a mystery, part, I believe, of what Paul calls the mystery of
godliness, that our faith is not our own, but is a gift, purely unearned.
So when I don’t feel faith, or even hope, I remind myself that faith
doesn’t come from me but from the Holy Spirit as He renews my spirit,
and so I turn to Luther’s words in the previous section of the Creed:
I believe that Jesus Christ, true God, begotten of the Father from
eternity, and also true man, born of the Virgin Mary, is my Lord, who
has redeemed me, a lost and condemned person, purchased and won me
from all sins, from death, and from the power of the devil; not with gold
or silver, but with His holy, precious blood and with His innocent
suffering and death, that I may be His own and live under Him in His
kingdom and serve Him in everlasting righteousness, innocence, and
blessedness, just as He is risen from the dead, lives and reigns to all
eternity.
And then I declare, joining Luther:
This is most certainly true.

13 And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of
truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were
marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, 14 who is a deposit
guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are
God’s possession—to the praise of his glory. - Ephesians 1:13–14.
26 In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not
know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us
through wordless groans. 27 And he who searches our hearts knows the
mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in
accordance with the will of God. - Romans 8:26–27
7 But very truly I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away.
Unless I go away, the Advocate [the Holy Spirit] will not come to you;
but if I go, I will send him to you. 8 When he [the Holy Spirit] comes, he
will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and
judgment: 9 about sin, because people do not believe in me; 10 about
righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me
no longer; 11 and about judgment, because the prince of this world now
stands condemned.
These are three of the many pertinent roles of the Holy Spirit, namely:
The Holy Spirit guarantees salvation
The Holy Spirit intercedes in accordance with God’s will
The Holy Spirit teaches right and wrong
Also, the Holy Spirit distributes “spiritual gifts” according to his will.

Because without it you cannot live as Christian. Let me explain.
you need it to understand the scriptures, as they a were written with the
help of the holy spirit
you need it to resist temptations and live a clean and moral Christian
18. life, without it it is impossible not to fall either to sexual desires, or
greed or anything, you name it.
you need it to reform your life and clean up your bad habits and do
some hard changes: e.g. give up smoking or drinking or going to bed
wiht every girl/boy, or to continuosly work on your bad traits to become
more Christ-like
you need it for and in your prayers: someties you are so down you cnnot
even tell God how you feel and then you just say to God please, you
know how I feel and the holy spirit helps there and He does understand
unuttered groanings as the bible says.
Romans 8: 26 In like manner, the spirit also joins in with help for our
weakness;j for the problem is that we do not know what we should pray
for as we need to, but the spirit itself pleads for us with unuttered*
groanings. 27 But the one who searches the heartsk knows what the
meaning of the spirit is, because it is pleading in harmony with God for
the holy ones.
5. And lastly you ask holy sprit to endure hardships without it you
cannot do that.

The Holy Spirit is the greatest component of a Christians life. It serves
so many purposes. Among them are the following:
One part of the “born again experience”- John 3:5
The seal that authenticates us as Christians- Ephesians 4:30
It serves as the element of adoption for us to become the “sons of God”
19. or terrestrial angels-Romans 8:15/John 1:12
It is a comforter- John 14:26
It is a guide- John 16:13
It is a teacher- John 14:26
It is a purifier- Matthew 3:11–12
It will enable us to resurrect- Romans 8:11
It is what will grant us eternal life- Romans 6:23
It’s the manifestation of God’s grace- Ephesians 2:8
It’s the agent which empowers us to walk in righteousness and display
godly character as witnesses- Acts 1:8/Galatians 5:22–23

The Holy Spirit is simply God's active force that He uses to get things
done. It's not an individual as many Christians would have you believe.
If Jesus is God's Son, and not His equal, that deletes the Trinity by one.
And if the Holy Spirit is merely how Jehovah accomplishes His purpose,
that deletes the duality by one. By my reckoning, that makes Jehovah a
single individual, His Son a single individual, also, and His Holy Spirit a
force, not an individual. This biblical teaching existed long before the
Council of Nicea ever knew about the Trinity. This makes the Trinity an
add on or false teaching. Meaning one is the truth, and can be proved,
the other is a lie that cannot be explained. Think about it. Even church
leaders agree the Trinity can't be authenticated, because it's a mystery.

The Holy Spirit fills and empowers the Christian for living the
Christian life. He regenerates the Christian at the moment of salvational
20. faith, sanctifies him or her, grants spiritual gifts, empowers witness,
empowers spiritual understanding, and enables Christian spiritual
growth. The Holy Spirit is the person in the Godhead most closely to the
life of the Christian, to the point that some call the Church age, the Age
of the Holy Spirit.

Because, the eternal Spirit of God is the source of the Christian’s
spiritual life: both its origin, and its continuation. The Holy Spirit is to
the Christian’s spiritual life, what the Creator is to this world. The
Christian believes, that without God the Creator, the world would never
have come into existence, and without his continuing, sustaining,
preserving work, the world would crash out of existence. Similarly,
without the Holy Spirit of God, the Christian would never have been
born again, and without the Spirit’s ever-present sanctifying influence,
the spiritual life of the Christian would drop back into the spiritual
deadness from whence it came.
This is what Christians mean, when they say “I believe in the Holy
Spirit” (Apostles’ Creed). He is the third person of the Eternal Trinity,
who brings all the benefit and power of salvation that was accomplished
in the death and resurrection of Christ to them, to live within them,
their present possession.
But in case you might think that the Holy Spirit’s work is only relevant
to ‘regeneration’ and ‘sanctification’ (as mentioned above), the Bible
teaches that the work of the Holy Spirit is essential for many other vital
bible teachings. Eg— The Holy Spirit and the Trinity. The Holy Spirit
and Creation. The Holy Spirit and Revelation. The Holy Spirit and
salvation. The Holy Spirit and illumination. The Holy Spirit and Jesus
Christ. The Holy Spirit and the spiritual gifts. The fruit of the Holy
Spirit. The Holy Spirit and guidance. The Holy Spirit and divine
Sonship. The Holy Spirit and prayer. The Holy Spirit and the church.
The Holy Spirit and his symbols. The Holy Spirit and the unpardonable
sin. The Holy Spirit and human responsibility. Every well-taught
Christian would be able to ‘wax-eloquent’ on all of these subjects, to do
with the Holy Spirit’s person and work.

I think that it may be tough to find a real answer. You should do some
research on the council of Nicea to understand more about how
Christianity has changed and adjusted its emphasis over time.
I can tell you that the light and sound are the twin aspects of God that
emanate down into this world. The Holy Spirit is the light and sound
and gets manifested in varying degrees of clarity as it is fractionated as
it descends into this world. This knowledge has been cut out of much of
Christianity and it’s now just about symbology instead of direct
experience.

The Holy Spirit Is God, and He Has many Gifts for us, to Help us with
our Salvation, and to grow in the Holy Faith in God. To submit to His
Will, is a profound decision for every Christian to make.
The Saints are such Holy people who have made this decision, and if you

Why is the Work of the Holy Spirit so Important?
Fifth Sunday of Easter
April 28, 2013
Dear friends in Christ.
Whenever you watch a sporting event like basketball or football,
baseball or even NASCAR, it is very seldom that you get a glimpse of
the people operating the cameras. Oh, sure, from time to time the
23. network might give you a wide angle shot of the stadium crowd or
maybe an unusual angle of home plate, and in that shot you will see one
or maybe two different cameras with their operators. But on most
occasions we never see them. Even though they have the very important
job of following the ball as it arcs toward the outfield wall, and
capturing all the action of the game so that we feel like we are right
there in the stadium we hardly ever see them. We know they are there
because we are being blessed by the important work that they are doing,
but in all reality they are the ones who work behind the scenes, as it
were. Well, in many ways this is how the Holy Spirit works in God’s
kingdom. He works behind the scenes. He works quietly and often
times subtly as he does his most important work of calling people to
faith in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. Though we can often tell
where he is and even sometimes see what he is doing through the work
that he has accomplishes, like most camera operators, we never see him.
This is why we want to take a few minutes today to take a look at the
important work that the Holy Spirit does so that we might learn why it
is so very important for us as Christians.
Well, as Christians, we already know why the work of the Holy Spirit is
so very important! We know that the work of the Holy Spirit is so
important because he is the one who calls people to faith through the
Word of God. He is the one who causes faith in Jesus to spring up in a
person’s heart so that through that faith they might have eternal life,
just as Jesus promised us when he said, “For God so loved the world
that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not
perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16, NIV84) And again, “Whoever
believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will
be condemned.” (Mark 16:16, NIV84)
Now, if I were to stand up here this morning and tell you that I had a
gift of $10.00 for each and every person who came to church today, that
would automatically mean that no one would be excluded from that gift.
Each person would be given a $10.00 bill as they left church today. So,
even if you were the last one ushered out of church today, you would
have no worries because you trusted me when I said that I had a $10.00
bill for each and every person. In essence this is the same promise that
Jesus made when he went to the cross. He proclaimed and promised
that the benefits of his death and resurrection were for all people. He
24. ransomed everyone and no one was left out. But, let me extend that
illustration just a little bit more. What if, as you were leaving church
today, I did offer you a $10.00 bill, but for whatever reason instead of
taking it and being blessed by an extra $10.00, you simply walked by
and didn’t take it. Even though the money was yours and you would
have been blessed by it, you refused to take it and now you are not
receiving those blessings. Not only are you not receiving the blessings, it
is your own fault that you did not take the gift that was offered you.
The same is true in God’s kingdom. It is the Holy Spirit who works in
our hearts to call us to faith so that we might receive the blessings that
Jesus offers us. However, if someone resists or refuses to believe all the
blame lies on the person who refuses to believe in Jesus.
Sadly, this is our natural spiritual condition and this is why the work of
the Holy Spirit is so important! As Paul tells us in Ephesians, “As for
you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins, 2 in which you used
to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the
kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are
disobedient. 3 All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the
cravings of our sinful nature and following its desires and thoughts.
Like the rest, we were by nature objects of wrath." (Ephesians 2:1–3,
NIV84)
By nature, we were nothing more than spiritually dead and blind
enemies of God. We did not naturally come to faith in Jesus as our
Savior nor did we, one day, out of the blue, simply decide that we were
going to become Christians and follow Jesus for the rest of our life. No;
because by nature we were no different than a corpse lying in a coffin!
Though a well meaning pastor might have promised us a gift of $10.00,
we would not have been able to take it. Even if he had come to our
coffin and placed the bill in our hand so that we took it to our grave, it
would have done us no good, because we were dead and blind enemies
of God.
But now, everything has changed because of the important work that
the Holy Spirit has been about in our hearts! The Apostle Paul says it
this way, “Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we
have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom
25. we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand.
And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God. 3 Not only so, but we
also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces
perseverance; 4 perseverance, character; and character, hope. 5 And
hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into
our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us. 6 You see, at just
the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the
ungodly. 7 Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a
good man someone might possibly dare to die. 8 But God demonstrates
his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for
us. 9 Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more
shall we be saved from God’s wrath through him! 10 For if, when we
were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his
Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through
his life! 11 Not only is this so, but we also rejoice in God through our
Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received
reconciliation." (Romans 5:1–11, NIV84)
We are at peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ who died for
us while we were still sinners only because the Lord himself poured out
upon us, the promised Holy Spirit. It is through the work of the Holy
Spirit that we have been called to faith by the Gospel. It is through the
work of the Holy Spirit calling us to faith, in most cases through the
water connected with the Word in baptism, that we now believe in Jesus
as our Savior. It is through the work of the Holy Spirit that we have
been gathered together as believers and enlightened with his gifts,
sanctified—made holy—and kept in the one true faith in Jesus Christ,
our Lord and Savior. It is the Holy Spirit who works through the
Gospel in the Word and in the Sacraments to call us to faith and
strengthen our faith in Jesus who has freed us from our sins by his
death and resurrection.
This is the work that the Holy Spirit is continually doing, and this is the
work in which we participate every time we take the Word of God with
us. Though we have no power to call someone to faith, we have many,
many opportunities to plant the seeds of God’s Word in a person’s heart
by humbly and confidently sharing our faith. We have many
opportunities to tell others about Jesus, their Savior, who died on the
cross and rose again from the dead, so that through these beautiful
26. words of the Gospel the Holy Spirit might have the opportunity to work
in another person’s heart and cause the seeds of faith to grow.
What greater, more important work could there be than the work that
the Holy Spirit does! Though we might expect to find the Holy Spirit
right in the middle of the picture, like the reporters who cover the
sports action, he is the one who works behind the scenes, like the
camera operators. Though we have never seen him, we know that he is
at work. He is at work in our hearts today, strengthening our faith in
Jesus Christ as our Savior. Yet, he is also at work in every part of the
World. He is working even now, every place that the Word of God is
being shared and taught. He is working through that word, calling
people to faith in Jesus Christ their Savior, strengthening their faith,
enlightening them with his gifts, sanctifying them and keeping them in
the one true faith, in Jesus their Lord and Savior.
Amen.

Why do we need the holy spirit?
Why do we need the holy spirit
- Elizabeth
Hi Elizabeth,
What a great question!
The bible presents the role of the Holy Spirit as a continuation of the
work of God the Father and Jesus, the Son in the lives of the believer.
As such He is an essential companion of every Christian and is the
guarantee and means by which we persevere to the point of reaching
heaven. Let me explain.
When God rescued Israel from Egypt he did so so they would become
his people and he would become their God (Exodus 6:6-8). This was
27. fulfilled at Mt Sinai when God met with his people and gave them the
law. They camped around Mt Sinai (Exodus 19ff) and God dwelt with
them, teaching them about how they were to live as his people. This
concept of God dwelling with his people is a crucial aspect and in many
ways this meeting can be seen as the first “church” of the bible. God
continued to dwell with his people first in the tabernacle (read the rest
of Exodus especially Ex 40:34-38) and then in the temple (1 Kings 8:10-
11). God dwelling with his people was always a part of God’s plan.
Indeed God’s greatest act of judgment was to withdraw from his people
when their sin became so great (Ezekiel 10) and he sent them away into
Babylon.
When we come to the New Testament, John describes Jesus in a very
evocative way. In John 1 Jesus is described as God’s Word who is God
and who became man and dwelt with us. Here John sees God coming to
dwell with his people again. Jesus did all that God had done at Mt Sinai
- telling people about God and about how they were to live as his people.
He gathered around him his disciples who became the first “christians”.
On the eve of his death, he gathered with them and spoke to them about
his departure (John 13-16). As you can imagine they were grief stricken.
Jesus promised them another companion (or counselor) to take his place
and who would be with them forever - the Holy Spirit (John 14:15-31).
The Spirit will dwell with (in) them (vs 17-18), and teach them and
remind them of Jesus teaching (vs 26).
This is, of course, what happened at Pentecost (Acts 2) with astonishing
results. The disciples were turned from scared people cowering in a
room for fear of the Jews into the people who courageously proclaim the
news of Jesus despite all that happens to them. The Spirit in them
enabled them. It is by the Holy Spirit that God (the Father and the Son)
dwell with us, his people, and continue to teach us and help us to stay
true to him. That is why we need to Holy Spirit.
As such the role of the Spirit is multi-faceted.
Using the bible, the Spirit teaches and convicts us of the truth and
assures us that they are saved (1Jn 3:24, 2Cor 1:22, Eph 1:13; 4:30)
It is the Spirit in our lives that unites us to Christ in his death and
resurrection (Rom 6:1-11, Gal 2:20). Being ‘in Christ’ by the Spirit
secures our completeness (Col 2:9-10). Being ‘in Christ’ by the Spirit
unites us with others (1 Cor 12:12-13, Eph 4:4-6)
He empowers us to do what is right, live in faith and do good works (Ro
28. 7:18, Eph 2:4-10). It is always God’s work in us that means that we are
saved in Christ and living new lives for him. It is the Spirit that makes
Christians aware of their sin and empowers them to turn away in
repentance.
It is the Spirit who distinguishes us from unbelievers (Eph 2:12, 1 Cor
15:21ff) and empowers us for mission in the world (Acts 2:1).
The Spirit is an essential part of the Christian life, the Spirit is how God
works in his people until the second coming of Christ. The Spirit helps
Christians to understand the word of God and live it out in their lives
today.
There is much more that can be said but I hope this paints an amazing
picture of what we have been given in the Holy Spirit and encourages
you to read and find out more.

Why is the Holy Spirit Important in Our Lives?
#
1. It is Necessary for salvation
John 3:4–7 KJV 1900
4 Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old?
can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb, and be born?
5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born
of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the
Spirit is spirit.
7 Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again.
When an individual ask Jesus into their heart something supernatural
takes place.
29. God not only forgives that person of all the sin they have committed
God also cleanses them from all unrighteousness
God looks at the new believer just as if he or she has never sinned.
when we ask Jesus into our lives, He comes in and take up residence.
In other words; God moves in!
And it is nothing that you and I do to deserve it; It is the gift of God;
It is up to each individual to receive that gift
Titus 3:5 NKJV
5 not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to
His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and
renewing of the Holy Spirit,
You and I are renewed by the Holy Spirit.
We have been made brand new by the Holy Spirit.
We have been made brand new because of the washing and cleansing of
salvation and because the Holy Spirit comes in and gives new birth to
our spirit.
Bottom line is; you and I are made new because of the Holy Spirit
2 Corinthians 5:17 NKJV
17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have
passed away; behold, all things have become new.
We are different inside because of God’s cleansing power and His Spirit
is alive within us>
The old life is gone and the new has come because we are now living in
Christ.
We were once dead in sin, but now we are alive in Christ.
Thank God; that old things have passed away
Thank God; that His Spirit lives in me
Thank God ; that all things have been made new
30. Thank God I am dead to sin and I’m alive in Christ.
Galatians 2:20 NKJV
20 I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but
Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by
faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.

Why is the Holy Spirit Important in Our lives?
1. It is necessary for Salvation
2. The Holy Spirit Makes our Salvation Real
Many times the enemy or even our own doubt will tell us that we are not
really saved.
That our sins are not forgiven or guilt and shame will try to take over
our lives/
This is spiritual warfare
Satan attempts to discourage us.
But thank God That He sent the Holy Spirit to live in us so that we can
fully experience the free gift of salvation.
God dis not only forgive us of our sins, but He lives in us through the
Holy Spirit
I want to look at this real quick of what this means for us as born again
believers .
I want to look at several ways the Holy Spirit helps us
The Holy Spirit helps us to understand what salvation really means for
us
1.
1 Corinthians 2:12 NKJV
12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who
is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given
to us by God.
31. The Holy Spirit is so important to believer in that He will help us to
understand the things that have been freely given to us in Christ.
2. God’s Spirit in us is a guarantee that we are saved.
Ephesians 1:13–14 NKJV
13 In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel
of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with
the Holy Spirit of promise,
14 who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the
purchased possession, to the praise of His glory.
Ephe
The presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives assures us that we belong to
God.
3. God’s spirit helps us guard the salvation that He has freely given us.
2 Timothy 1:14 NKJV
14 That good thing which was committed to you, keep by the Holy Spirit
who dwells in us.
Satan would like nothing more for us to give up and walk away from
God, but the Holy Spirit will help us run the race until the end.
4. God’s Spirit helps us walk with God
Galatians 5:16
Galatians 5:16 NKJV
16 I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the
flesh.
If we walk in the spirit we shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. That is a
promise of God
5. God’s Spirit helps us pray when we don’t know how to pray.
Romans 8:26–27 NKJV
26 Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know
32. what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes
intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.
27 Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit
is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of
God.
When we are weak and don’t know how to pray, the Spirit himself will
intercede for us with groans that words cannot express.
1. It is necessary for Salvation
2. The Holy Spirit Makes our Salvation Real
3. The Holy Spirits keeping power:
God not only has the power to save us from our sins, but He has the
power to keep us close to Him and keep us from sin.
It was once said that “sin will keep you from the presence of God, and
the presence of God will keep you from sin.” We must always be aware
that we belong to Jesus and He lives in us.
We have become dwelling places for the very presence of God.
1 Corinthians 6:19
1 Corinthians 6:19 NKJV
19 Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit
who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own?
When we receive God’s gift of salvation, we accept the fact that; He is
going to live in us every moment of every day,
not just on Sundays and Wednesdays or when we pray, or read His
word,
but everywhere that we go and everything that we do,
and because He does live in us we can enjoy a close relationship with
Him.
When we are mindful of the presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives, we
understand the keeping power of our salvation.
The Holy Spirit will monitor our heart,
He will keep us from sin if we allow Him to.
The holy Spirit guards our heart from sin like an alarm device.
33. When we enter into temptation, the Holy Spirit will make us aware to
be cautious or flee from the situation.
It is up to us to not grieve the Holy Spirit.
When we are obedient to the Spirit, it will cause us to desire more of
God!!!!
1. It is necessary for Salvation
2. The Holy Spirit Makes our Salvation Real
3. The Holy Spirits keeping power:
4. The Holy Spirit will show the character and heart of God.
God’s presence in our lives not only blesses us, but everyone that
surrounds us.
God has a special way of moving through us to touch and affect others
that are in need.
We not only witness to the unbeliever by the life that we live, but we also
encourage other believers.
God is looking for people who are willing to do His work and He wants
to fill them with His Holy Spirit to enable them to carry out the task at
hand.
Galatians
Galatians 5:22–23 NKJV
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness,
goodness, faithfulness,
23 gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.
A person who possesses the fruits of the spirit show the character and
heart of God.
Love - This person has an unswerving commitment to Christ. They are
devoted to their Saviour. Unashamed to show their affection to Jesus,
they demonstrate a passion for God by desiring more of God. Their
34. love for God is real because they demonstrate God’s unconditional love
to other people.
Joy - This person finds pleasure and delight in Jesus. They are so glad
to be a Christian that they are easily satisfied. We as Christians need
this character in the church.
Peace - This person is calm in spirit because they find rest for their soul
in Christ. Their hearts are not clouded with the issues or the worries of
life. They will strive for unity and agreement with others.
Patience - This person keeps composure in the most difficult
circumstances. They find peace of mind through their confidence in
God and don’t allow circumstances to rule them.
Goodness - This person is decent and honest. They are morally the
same no matter where they are or who they might be with. They are a
person of integrity and they strive for excellence.
Faithfulness - This person demonstrates allegiance and worship to God
through constant devotion. They are loyal in their actions to the Lord.
They serve the Lord in the good and the bad.
Gentleness - These people are meek, but not weak. They have a sweet
manner about them. They are careful with the feelings of others.
Self-control - These people are composed and stable. Their confidence
in who they are in Jesus is reflected in their handling of problems and
temptations in life.
Why is the Holy Spirit Important?
Matthew 26:31-34
Matthew 26:31–34 NKJV
31 Then Jesus said to them, “All of you will be made to stumble because
of Me this night, for it is written: ‘I will strike the Shepherd, And the
sheep of the flock will be scattered.’
32 But after I have been raised, I will go before you to Galilee.”
33 Peter answered and said to Him, “Even if all are made to stumble
because of You, I will never be made to stumble.”
34 Jesus said to him, “Assuredly, I say to you that this night, before the
35. rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.”
Matthew 26:
Matthew 26:69–74 NKJV
69 Now Peter sat outside in the courtyard. And a servant girl came to
him, saying, “You also were with Jesus of Galilee.”
70 But he denied it before them all, saying, “I do not know what you are
saying.”
71 And when he had gone out to the gateway, another girl saw him and
said to those who were there, “This fellow also was with Jesus of
Nazareth.”
72 But again he denied with an oath, “I do not know the Man!”
73 And a little later those who stood by came up and said to Peter,
“Surely you also are one of them, for your speech betrays you.”
74 Then he began to curse and swear, saying, “I do not know the Man!”
Immediately a rooster crowed.
Why is the Holy Spirit Important?
The same man that denied Jesus is the same man after being filled with
the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost preached:
Acts 2:14-41
Acts 2:14–41 NKJV
14 But Peter, standing up with the eleven, raised his voice and said to
them, “Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known
to you, and heed my words.
15 For these are not drunk, as you suppose, since it is only the third
hour of the day.
16 But this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:
36. 17 ‘And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God, That I will pour
out of My Spirit on all flesh; Your sons and your daughters shall
prophesy, Your young men shall see visions, Your old men shall dream
dreams.
18 And on My menservants and on My maidservants I will pour out My
Spirit in those days; And they shall prophesy.
19 I will show wonders in heaven above And signs in the earth beneath:
Blood and fire and vapor of smoke.
20 The sun shall be turned into darkness, And the moon into blood,
Before the coming of the great and awesome day of the Lord.
21 And it shall come to pass That whoever calls on the name of the Lord
Shall be saved.’
22 “Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a Man attested
by God to you by miracles, wonders, and signs which God did through
Him in your midst, as you yourselves also know—
23 Him, being delivered by the determined purpose and foreknowledge
of God, you have taken by lawless hands, have crucified, and put to
death;
24 whom God raised up, having loosed the pains of death, because it
was not possible that He should be held by it.
25 For David says concerning Him: ‘I foresaw the Lord always before
my face, For He is at my right hand, that I may not be shaken.
26 Therefore my heart rejoiced, and my tongue was glad; Moreover my
flesh also will rest in hope.
27 For You will not leave my soul in Hades, Nor will You allow Your
37. Holy One to see corruption.
28 You have made known to me the ways of life; You will make me full
of joy in Your presence.’
29 “Men and brethren, let me speak freely to you of the patriarch
David, that he is both dead and buried, and his tomb is with us to this
day.
30 Therefore, being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with
an oath to him that of the fruit of his body, according to the flesh, He
would raise up the Christ to sit on his throne,
31 he, foreseeing this, spoke concerning the resurrection of the Christ,
that His soul was not left in Hades, nor did His flesh see corruption.
32 This Jesus God has raised up, of which we are all witnesses.
33 Therefore being exalted to the right hand of God, and having
received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, He poured out
this which you now see and hear.
34 “For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he says himself: ‘The
Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at My right hand,
35 Till I make Your enemies Your footstool.” ’
36 “Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly that God has
made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ.”
37 Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to
Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Men and brethren, what shall we
do?”
38. 38 Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be
baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you
shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
39 For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are
afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call.”
40 And with many other words he testified and exhorted them, saying,
“Be saved from this perverse generation.”
41 Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day
about three thousand souls were added to them.
Why is the Holy Spirit Important?
Billions of souls that have never heard the saving message of Jesus
Christ.
Time is getting short.
People are dying without Jesus as we speak.
People in our own community don’t know what it is to have a personal
relationship with Jesus Christ.
Monday you will encounter a soul that is lost, dying and going to hell if
you don’t do what you have been called to do.
You shall receive power after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you and
you shall be my witnesses!!!!!!
We need the Holy Ghost:
Because it is necessary for salvation.
To make our salvation real
To keep our salvation.
To have the character and heart of God.
And, to be witnesses for the Lord!!!!!!

"THE HOLY SPIRIT OF GOD"
An Important Subject For Our Study
INTRODUCTION
1. This lesson begins a series of studies on the Holy Spirit...
a. One might ask, "Why such a study?"
b. Is it important to spend several lessons dealing with this subject
alone?
2. An understanding and appreciation of the Holy Spirit is indeed
important, and the purpose of this introductory lesson is to make
sure we understand why
[The value of studying about the Spirit is to be seen in noticing His
prominence in several areas...]
I. THE PROMINENCE OF THE SPIRIT IN "THE BIBLE"
A. HIS MENTION IN THE OLD TESTAMENT...
1. The O.T. mentions the Holy Spirit 88 times
2. 23 books in the O.T. refer to the Holy Spirit
3. Although the actual expression "Holy Spirit" is used only 3
times - e.g., Ps 51:11
4. Other expressions referring to the Spirit are used (e.g., "the
Spirit of God") - Gen 1:2
B. HIS MENTION IN THE NEW TESTAMENT...
40. 1. The N.T. mentions the Holy Spirit 264 times
2. 60 or more references in the gospels
3. Acts has 57 references (which is why some call it "The Acts Of
The Holy Spirit")
4. The epistles refer to the Holy Spirit 132 times
5. Only 3 epistles make no mention of the Spirit (Philemon, 2 & 3
John)
[To understand much of the Bible itself, one needs to understand (as
much as humanly possible) such a prominent figure as the Holy Spirit!
Imagine someone saying they understood the story of the Bible, but did
not know much about Abraham! Note also...]
II. THE PROMINENCE OF THE SPIRIT IN "THE LIFE OF
CHRIST"
A. HIS INVOLVEMENT IN THE BIRTH OF JESUS...
1. Jesus was conceived of the Holy Spirit in the womb of Mary - Mt
1:20; Lk 1:30-35
2. Various individuals were filled with the Spirit to make
pronouncements about His birth
a. Elizabeth, mother of John the Baptist - Lk 1:41-42
b. Zacharias, father of John the Baptist - Lk 1:67-79
c. Simeon, who saw the infant Jesus when presented in the
Temple - Lk 2:25-35
B. HIS PRESENCE AT THE BAPTISM BY JOHN...
1. Descended in bodily form like a dove - Lk 3:21-22
2. Even "alighting upon Him" - Mt 3:16
C. HIS PRESENCE DURING THE TEMPTATIONS IN THE
41. WILDERNESS...
1. Jesus was "filled with the Holy Spirit" - Lk 4:1
2. He was "led by the Spirit" into the wilderness - Lk 4:1; Mt 4:1
D. HIS POWER DURING JESUS' MINISTRY...
1. Jesus returned from His temptations "in the power of the
Spirit" to teach in the synagogues - Lk 4:14-15
2. He applied Isaiah's prophecy to Himself, which said "The Spirit
of the LORD is upon Me..." - Lk 4:16-21
3. On one occasion it is said that Jesus "rejoiced in the Spirit"
- Lk 10:21
4. Jesus claimed to cast out demons by the power of the Holy
Spirit - Mt 12:28
[As Christians, can we really hope to grow in the knowledge of our Lord
and Savior, without at least an elementary understanding of the Holy
Spirit, so prominent in His earthly life? Consider also...]
III. THE PROMINENCE OF THE SPIRIT IN "THE CHRISTIAN'S
LIFE"
A. HIS INVOLVEMENT IN OUR BECOMING CHRISTIANS...
1. We are convicted of sin by the Holy Spirit - Jn 16:7-8
2. We are "born again" of the Spirit - Jn 3:5-8
3. We are "renewed" of the Holy Spirit - Tit 3:4-6
B. HIS PRESENCE IN OUR LIVES AS CHRISTIANS...
1. We "live in the Spirit" - Ga 5:25a
2. We are to "walk in the Spirit", producing the "fruit of the
Spirit" - Ga 5:25b,16-18,22-23
3. We must set our minds on "the things of the Spirit" - Ro 8:5-6
42. 4. It is "by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body"
- Ro 8:12-13
5. Only when "led by the Spirit" are we truly the "sons of God"
- Ro 8:14
6. The Holy Spirit "makes intercession for us" in our prayers - Ro
8:26-27
7. God strengthens us "with might through His Spirit" in the inner
man - Ep 3:16
8. Thus we can enjoy the "communion (fellowship) of the Spirit"
- 2Co 13:14; Php 2:1
[Future lessons will discuss these things in greater detail. Suffice it
to say that since the Holy Spirit is so involved in our lives as
Christians, it behooves us to understand the proper relationship we are
to sustain with the Spirit! Finally, the need to study what the Bible
teaches concerning the Spirit is seen when we consider...]
IV. THE PROMINENCE OF THE SPIRIT REGARDING "TRUTH
AND ERROR"
A. HE IS THE SOURCE OF GOD'S TRUTH...
1. The O.T. scriptures with their prophecies came through the
agency of the Holy Spirit - 2Pe 1:20-21; 1Pe 1:10-11
2. Jesus told His apostles that the Holy Spirit would teach them
"all things", and guide them "into all truth" - Jn 14:25-26;
16:12-13
3. There is no other way to know the truth of God's Will except by
what the Holy Spirit revealed to the apostles - 1Co 2:10-13
B. HE IS THE SUBJECT OF MUCH ERROR...
1. Much error is taught about the nature of the Holy Spirit
43. a. Some think He is an impersonal force expressive of God's
power
b. Others think He is really Jesus in another form
2. Many people misunderstand:
a. The baptism of the Holy Spirit
b. The gift of the Holy Spirit
c. The spiritual gifts of the Holy Spirit
d. The indwelling of the Holy Spirit
3. Many attribute "impressions or "intuitive feelings" to being
"led by the Spirit"
a. Ignorant of how the Holy Spirit leads us
b. Attributing to the "Holy Spirit" what is really the "human
spirit"
CONCLUSION
1. It should be evident that our chosen subject is indeed an important
one...
a. As our understanding of the Holy Spirit increases, so will our
appreciation for Him
b. Our next study will consider what is revealed about the
personality of the Holy Spirit
2. As important as understanding the Holy Spirit might be...
a. It is not essential to have a comprehensive knowledge of the
Spirit to become a child of God
b. Any more than understanding the birth process when we were
physically born
What is essential is that we respond to the terms of pardon revealed by
the Holy Spirit in the gospel of Christ - cf. Act 2:36-38

In my last post I discussed the absence of the Holy Spirit in our
churches and some reasons for why I think that is. Now I think it is
important to explore the Holy Spirit and why the Spirit should be an
important part of our lives as Christians.
So what exactly is the Holy Spirit? As I mentioned previously we do not
really understand the Spirit and that freaks us out. That is what makes
this hard. The Spirit is not easy to define and this doesn’t sit well within
our modern mindset. We like answers, but we don’t always get them
when it comes to the Spirit.
What do we know about the Spirit, then? Here are a few things
Scripture tells about the Spirit:
The Spirit reminds us of the things Jesus said and taught (John 14:26).
The Spirit is our Comforter and Advocate (John 14-15).
The Spirit transforms us (2 Corinthians 3:18).
The Spirit helps us pray (Rom 8:26-27).
The Spirit helps us understand the gifts God has given us (1 Corinthians
2:12).
This list is by no means exhaustive. But it should be apparent that the
Holy Spirit is meant to play an important role in the life of Christians. If
you read through the book of Acts, which tells the story of the earliest
Christians, you will notice how prominently the Spirit features there.
This is telling. The earliest Christians were guided and lead by the
Spirit.
In Acts 15 a group of Christian leaders gathered together to figure out
the solution to a major problem and when they decided on a solution
they sent a letter out to some of the churches. The letter starts out, “It
45. seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us…” These Christians seem to
have come to a conclusion with the help of the Holy Spirit. Reading
through Acts you get the feeling that the Holy Spirit was actually a
member of the earliest Christian communities.
Yet we tend to ignore the Spirit.
Doesn’t it seem like we are missing out on something?
I’m not an expert in the area of the Holy Spirit by any means, but it
seems to me that the Spirit was meant to be a vital part of the Christian
life. Jesus promised to send the Spirit to help guide his disciples. I don’t
think we were meant to live as Christians without the help of the Spirit.
We just aren’t strong enough to do it on our own. The Spirit helps us
and transforms us. The list of the fruit of the Spirit in Paul’s letter to
the Galatians are the qualities that start to appear in us as the Spirit
does its work in us. Why would we not want all of this power we could
get?
So what do we do? Once again, I’m no expert so these are just my
suggestions. If you have other suggestions please post them in the
comment section.
I think a big part of this is opening our eyes to notice what the Spirit is
already doing in our lives. I think often when we talk about God or
Jesus we are actually talking about the Spirit. Of course, all of the
members of the Trinity are connected but I think it is important to
experience the Spirit as a distinct member of the Trinity. Pray that you
will be aware of the Spirit working in your life and that you will be
aware of the Spirit leading you and transforming you.
Try praying to the Holy Spirit. I’ve started attempting to mention the
Spirit each time I pray and it seems to have helped me become more
aware of what the Spirit is doing.
Read the passages in Scripture that speak about the Holy Spirit. The
Scriptures listed above are good places to start. You could also meditate
on the fruit of the Spirit listed in Galatians 5:22.
Talk about the Holy Spirit. Bring it up when the opportunity arises.
This is another way to help remind us of the Spirit and the way it moves
in our lives.
Practice spiritual disciplines. There are many spiritual disciplines
designed to lead us into closer communion not just with the Spirit but
with the entire Trinity. If you need a good resource I recommend
46. Spiritual Disciplines Handbook by Adele Ahlberg Calhoun.
Those are just a few suggestions that have helped me. Hopefully they
will help you become more aware of the Spirit. God has given us the
Holy Spirit to help us in our journeys. Why would we want to ignore
this gift? I pray that Christians are beginning to be reminded of the
importance of the Holy Spirit and that the Church will recognize this
great power that is accessible to us." UNKNOWN
