The history of hearing aids began in 1588 when Giovanni Battista Porta described using wood carvings resembling animal ears to help people hear. In the following centuries, ear trumpets and other early devices were developed to address cosmetic concerns and amplify sound for those with hearing loss. King Goa IV of Portugal had a special throne built in 1820 to help him hear his subjects. The late 1800s saw inventions like the carbon transmitter and Siemens' phonophor telephone receiver for the hearing impaired. Mass production of early hearing aids began in the early 1900s.
7. Hearing Aid…Thrones? In 1820 King Goa the 4th of Portugal had a throne crafted to aid in hearing his subjects when they knelt before him.
8. Carbon-type hearing aids In 1881-1886 several inventers applied to get patents for Carbon Transmitters.
9. Siemens enters the world of hearing technology 1878 PHONOPHOR: special telephone receiver for the hearing-impaired, invented by Werner von Siemens. 1898 the first carbon-type hearing aid was produced in the U.S. by the Dictograph Company 1910 Siemens makes its first line of hearing instruments using this technology for hearing impaired employee's and their family members
10. From 1914-1940 Siemens produced many forms of personal amplifiers. All limited by size of components required.

Hi My name is Dr. Leanne Powers, I am an audiologist with Newport Audiology. Today I am going to share with you the history of hearing aids. Specifically highlighting Siemens role in this history and in the development of the hearing aid we have today.
As early as 1588 Giovanni Battista Porta described the use of wood carved animal ears to help people hear. Giovanni Battista Porta an Italian scholar during the Scientific revolution and reformation wrote about attempts to aid peoples hearing with Wood Carvings of animal ears in his book Practical Magic.
Though we cant date the first emergence of ear trumpets as we know them. We do know that Francis Bacon wrote about them in 1627. Ear Trumpets came in all shapes and sizes and were made from many materials: Sea shells, animal horns, wood, and Metal. Francis Bacon was an English Philosopher
From the very beginning people searched for ways to camouflage there hearing aids and need hearing assistance. These are two of my favorite attempts, the beard trumpet and the headband for the ladies. Ear trumpets were also hidden in canes or walking sticks. And of course…..(next slide)
The Ear trumpet spectacles.
The Urn was an attempt to aid in social gatherings with multiple people. Almost a prequel to the modern day FM system we recommend for people in business meetings and dinners. The Urn sat in the middle of the table and helped to pick up and deliver the voices from those around the table directly to the hearing impaired persons ear.
Another interesting adaptation was the Hearing aid throne. The most famous of these being owned by King Goa of Portugal. The arm rests act as funnels to deliver the sound directly to the person ear of the person sitting in the chair.
Carbon Transmitters transform sound into electrical energy.
Seimens enters the world of hearing technology when Werner von Siemens invented the Phonopher which was a specialized carbon receiver for the hearing impaired. It wasn’t long then before the first Cardon type hearing aid was invented in 1898 and in 1910 Siemends produces its first line of hearing aids for Siemens employees and their families.
Here are two handbag examples of hearing aids. There were actually fairly heavy.
