The Impact of Grief and Loss in the Workplace Presentation - 6th October 2021Morlai Kargbo, FCCA
This document discusses the impact of grief and loss in the workplace. It notes that experiences of loss, such as bereavement, job loss, or health issues, can cause brain trauma and affect people's emotional and physical capabilities at work. Sustained trauma from multiple losses is linked to poorer health, diminished work quality, and higher accident rates. The document cites research finding that 24% of British workers experienced a bereavement in the past year, but many additional losses go unreported, and most employers do not have bereavement policies or communicate about grief. Unresolved grief and loss is estimated to cost the UK economy billions annually in lost productivity.
This document discusses challenging common myths and stigma around mental illness. It notes that mental illnesses can affect anyone regardless of intelligence, social class, or income. Further, it emphasizes that mental illnesses should be treated similarly to physical illnesses, as illnesses, not character flaws. The document encourages understanding mental illnesses and supporting those affected.

Depression affects over 18 million Americans each year and rates are increasing globally. Depression impacts thoughts, mood, and physical health. While it can be triggered by life events and medical conditions, people with clinical depression often cannot overcome it without treatment. Effective treatments include medication, therapy, and social support, as depression is linked to physical health issues and many suffer needlessly due to stigma or lack of access to care.

This document outlines the mental health crisis in Canada, highlighting several key statistics:
- 1 in 5 Canadians will experience a mental illness in their lifetime, with depression and anxiety the most common. Suicide is a leading cause of death.
- There are not enough mental health services and providers in Canada to meet the growing demand as issues are brought "out of the shadows".
- Stigma remains a major barrier to treatment, with myths that mental illnesses mean someone is violent, weak, or lazy. Collaboration is needed between providers, families, and communities to improve support systems and recovery outcomes.
The document provides instructions and background information for a simulated patient encounter where a medical student must discuss drug treatment for schizophrenia with a patient's wife. It includes scenarios for both the student and the wife. The student must explain to the wife about her husband's current medication for schizophrenia, including how it works, potential side effects and benefits, and answers to her questions about how long treatment will last and the risks of stopping medication. The examiner will assess the student's communication skills and knowledge about schizophrenia treatment guidelines to determine if they pass the station.
Opioid Abuse and Suicide in The United StatesTerence Morris
Opioid Abuse & Suicide
has become a major public health crisis in the United States, with over 130 people dying every day from opioid-related drug overdoses. But the impact of this epidemic goes beyond just overdose deaths. Opioid abuse has also been linked to an increase in suicide rates, particularly in rural areas. In this article, we will explore the connection between opioid abuse and suicide and discuss the Rural Opioid Abuse Prevention Act, a new legislation aimed at addressing this issue. Studies have shown that individuals who abuse opioids are at a higher risk for suicidal thoughts and behaviors. This is due to the effects of opioids on the brain, which can lead to changes in mood, behavior, and decision-making. Opioid abuse can also exacerbate underlying mental health issues, such as depression and anxiety, which are known risk factors for suicide.
In addition, the social and economic consequences of opioid abuse, such as job loss, financial strain, and strained relationships, can also contribute to feelings of hopelessness and despair, increasing the risk of suicide. In response to the growing opioid epidemic and its impact on rural communities, the Rural Opioid Abuse Prevention Act was introduced in Congress in 2019. This legislation aims to address the unique challenges faced by rural areas in combating opioid abuse and its consequences.
The act includes provisions for increasing access to treatment and recovery services in rural areas, as well as funding for prevention and education programs. It also includes measures to improve data collection and monitoring of opioid abuse in rural communities, which can help inform future prevention efforts.
One of the lesser-known consequences of opioid abuse is the risk of colon burst, also known as colonic perforation. This occurs when the colon becomes weakened and ruptures due to chronic constipation caused by opioid use. This can lead to serious complications, including sepsis and death.
The risk of colon burst is particularly high in individuals who abuse opioids through injection, as the drugs can cause damage to the colon and surrounding tissues. This is just one of the many devastating consequences of opioid abuse that highlights the urgent need for prevention and treatment efforts.
If you or someone you know is struggling with opioid abuse, it is important to seek help immediately. There are many resources available, including hotlines, support groups, and treatment centers. Remember, recovery is possible and seeking help is the first step towards a healthier and happier life.
The connection between opioid abuse and suicide is a serious issue that requires immediate attention. The Rural Opioid Abuse Prevention Act is a step in the right direction, but more needs to be done to address this crisis. By raising awareness and providing support and resources, we can help prevent opioid abuse and save lives.

This document discusses the history and experience of depression from the perspective of the author. It then discusses the medicalization and marketing of mental health conditions and the psychotropic drugs used to treat them. It questions whether many conditions are actually diseases or normal human experiences, and outlines concerns about the lack of scientific evidence for diagnoses and side effects of psychotropic drugs.

Your finances have to run on rails; you have to remain in control. To that end, visibility into your firm’s profitability, billing productivity and account receivables are your gateways to increased revenue.
Law firms spend a significant amount of time and money attracting new clients, but many struggle to manage them beyond the initial touchpoint. Implementing a strong lead and intake process can help your firm convert more referrals into paying clients, grow monthly revenue, and lower the cost to acquire clients.
Want to grow your firm? Historically, you could charge more per hour or hire an associate. But what if there was a third way? Technology facilitates access to high-quality legal expertise at a surprisingly reasonable cost. Using freelance and contract legal help, you can do more work, grow your firm, and help more clients.
Whether at the end of the day or the end of the month, hard-working lawyers often look back and wonder why their billable time just doesn’t seem to measure up to all the long hours they spend in the office. Discover ways to detect holes in your system, as well as how to develop patches for the recurring leaks you have known about and struggled with for years.
This document summarizes the key factors to consider when evaluating on-premise versus cloud-based law practice management software. It discusses cost in terms of upfront, ongoing, and long-term expenses. Security is addressed, noting advantages of both on-premise control and cloud vendor expertise. Functionality such as implementation, customization, and mobile access is also compared. Connectivity depends on location and internet capabilities. Ethical obligations to protect client data apply regardless of the system chosen. The presentation aims to help firms decide which approach best fits their needs and capabilities.
Law firms usually view technology as being grafted onto existing, offline office systems. But, reformatting your law practice based on the features of a law practice management system is a coherent and effective way to build a better law firm.
Law practice demands are tough, especially in the digital age. Clients want more for less, and thus running an efficient law practice is more important than ever. Automating tasks can help you save time, reduce mistakes, enhance client service, and improve your bottom line (and maybe even give you time to take a break).
Social Media can be a powerful marketing tool for your law firm. But without a macro strategy in place or an understanding of the ethical implications of posting online, you may find yourself losing money or even violating statutory prohibitions.
Perhaps you're generating interest and traffic from online marketing, but are having a hard time converting it into paying clients. In this webinar, we explore some of the most common issues preventing lawyers from turning traffic into clients.
Since its 26.2 billion dollar acquisition by Microsoft at the end of 2016, we've begun to see an awakening by skeptics and users alike as to the possibilities that lie within LinkedIn to stand up and stand out. Many attorneys are turning to the revamped platform to connect with clients, potential clients, influencers, and others important to the growth of their practice.
Practicing at the top of your law license means that you’re doing those creative things that lawyers get paid the most money for. It means you’re not getting paid to answer phone calls. You’re not getting paid to schedule appointments with clients. You’re not getting paid to get coffee for someone. You’re ARE getting paid to do the high level creative work that lawyers do: creating strategies, crafting briefs, and in some cases conducting legal research.
Billing by the hour, though seemingly more profitable for law firms, presents a compounding conflict of interest between an attorney and their clients. For this reason, many lawyers celebrate the transition to a packaged flat-fee billing model — introducing predictability, incentive to make progress, and even a competitive advantage for their firms.
This document discusses considerations for law firms moving their practices to the cloud. It outlines common concerns raised by those hesitant to adopt cloud-based solutions, and argues that cloud services can address these concerns. Specifically, the document notes that cloud providers offer strong security protections, reliable data access and availability, lower costs over time, and compliance with ethics rules. It provides tips for firms successfully transitioning to the cloud, including inventorying their systems, researching providers, developing a project plan, and focusing on security throughout the process. The overall message is that cloud computing has become a safe, cost-effective and responsible option for modern law practices.
Rainmaking is simple, but it’s not easy. It takes deliberate actions on your part as an attorney to create the practice of your dreams. And it all starts with a plan. Build and execute your own rainmaking plan, tailored to your life and your career to make 2018 the best year ever!
Is it possible to improve your law practice and your life at the same time?Yes! You really can increase your productivity and improve your practice and your life. Every day, lawyers help to change their clients’ lives for the better. But all too often, you can lose sight of this reality and get caught up in your hectic daily routine.
Now, it’s time for you to change your life for the better.

Lifting the Corporate Veil. Power Point Presentationseri bangash
"Lifting the Corporate Veil" is a legal concept that refers to the judicial act of disregarding the separate legal personality of a corporation or limited liability company (LLC). Normally, a corporation is considered a legal entity separate from its shareholders or members, meaning that the personal assets of shareholders or members are protected from the liabilities of the corporation. However, there are certain situations where courts may decide to "pierce" or "lift" the corporate veil, holding shareholders or members personally liable for the debts or actions of the corporation.
Here are some common scenarios in which courts might lift the corporate veil:
Fraud or Illegality: If shareholders or members use the corporate structure to perpetrate fraud, evade legal obligations, or engage in illegal activities, courts may disregard the corporate entity and hold those individuals personally liable.
Undercapitalization: If a corporation is formed with insufficient capital to conduct its intended business and meet its foreseeable liabilities, and this lack of capitalization results in harm to creditors or other parties, courts may lift the corporate veil to hold shareholders or members liable.
Failure to Observe Corporate Formalities: Corporations and LLCs are required to observe certain formalities, such as holding regular meetings, maintaining separate financial records, and avoiding commingling of personal and corporate assets. If these formalities are not observed and the corporate structure is used as a mere façade, courts may disregard the corporate entity.
Alter Ego: If there is such a unity of interest and ownership between the corporation and its shareholders or members that the separate personalities of the corporation and the individuals no longer exist, courts may treat the corporation as the alter ego of its owners and hold them personally liable.
Group Enterprises: In some cases, where multiple corporations are closely related or form part of a single economic unit, courts may pierce the corporate veil to achieve equity, particularly if one corporation's actions harm creditors or other stakeholders and the corporate structure is being used to shield culpable parties from liability.
