The Future of Healthcare is here with Nano-biotechnology
By Timothy N. Crammer, MBA, PMP
Man, has come a long way in dealing with diseases that have troubled his life since
the beginnings of civilization. Today, technology has come to his aid in the treatment of
diseases. And now, nanotechnology is the next wave of technological innovation that
promises to revolutionize how we solve healthcare problems. This technology has
profound impact in not only healthcare, but electronics, information technology,
aerospace, transportation, national defense, agriculture, the environment and many
other areas.
What is nanobiotechnology?
Nanotechnology is the study of matter that is of incredibly small scale. (About 1 to 100
nanometers) The nanoscale is so tiny that a sheet of paper is about 100,000
nanometers thick. The width of a chromosome molecule is about 2 nanometers thick for
reference. Bio-nanotechnology and nano-biotechnology is the intersection of biology
and nanotechnology, and scientists and medical experts have discovered that
nanotechnology can be of assistance in earlier disease detection and is the key to
proactive healthcare to identify and prevent diseases before they occur.
Nanotechnology is bringing about the next wave of innovation in science, medicine and
engineering— the possibilities are endless.
Nanobiotechnology borrows concepts from other fields such as science and physics, and
from the study of how cells work inside the body. The technology has been used for
medical research in biosensors, nanomedicine, and Nano- bioengineering. This
technology is capable of revolutionizing medical tools and treatments.
Personalizing medical tools
Nanotechnology makes it easier to have all the necessary tools for early diseases
detection and prevention in one small package such as a strip or a smart watch. This
empowers people to be in the know, and in control of their health status at anytime and
anywhere by continuous monitoring of important health measures.
Proactive and predictive healthcare
Today’s healthcare solutions are reactive in nature. We currently treat the illnesses
when they have already occurred and have become serious in nature. However, with
the entry of smart nanobiotechnology devices, it is now easier to predict health
conditions in real-time. This way diseases are identified in their formation rather than
treating them when they have already caused damage to the human body. With
portable, disposable devices such as ClinPatch by Clinical Biometrics, Inc. Now
everyone can monitor their temperature, blood glucose, heart rate, oxygen saturation,
blood alcohol, blood pressure and many other conditions in an instant, and view these
measurements over time allowing medical trends to be identified and analyzed.
Proactive healthcare makes it possible to treat illnesses before they become serious, it
will lower mortality rates, and keep everyone in the know about the status of their
health. It is no surprise that it is much cheaper to proactively treat illness, than to treat
the disease once it becomes a serious issue. Imagine the possibility of the lives saved
and a decrease in bodily damages with preventative treatment.
Better, more precise treatment
The recent advances in nanomedicine could help us deal with some of the most
problematic illnesses today such as cancer and conditions caused by genetic issues.
Different researchers are looking at these technologies to assist in cell repair,
nanomedicine to detect and kill cancerous cells without affecting the immune system
and better ways to correct DNA deficiencies to name a few.
Cleaner environment, healthier population
There are also nanodevices already in production to enhance environmental purification
through the removal of pollutants from the ground water, air, and soil. With a clean
environment, we will have prevented bacteria, fungi, virus, and dangerous chemicals
from causing illnesses.
Nanotechnology and preventative health present amazing opportunities for future
healthcare delivery and the wellbeing of millions. Proactive healthcare is being
implemented today, and one can only imagine what possibilities are ahead for us.
