This document summarizes research on how smartphones enable the exploitation of white-collar workers. It finds that smartphones allow work to continue beyond standard hours, providing "free" unpaid labor. Workers are also willing to spend large sums on smartphones to showcase their status to colleagues, even if the cost exceeds their salary. Employers benefit from workers' improved productivity and extended hours through smartphones without contributing to the cost of the technology. The research concludes that smartphones both increase profits for employers and intensify self-exploitation among white-collar workers.

Designing Frictionless Experiences - IxDA Grand RapidsJoe Johnston
We’ve all heard the statement, design mobile first.. maybe it’s time to say, design for sensors first. These ambient experiences are going to become more and more incorporated into what we design. From wearable devices to button-sized low powered beacons that transmit signals, we need to think about how we can start capturing these signals to help create that perfect contextual experience for users.
The following whitepaper discusses the ways in which artificial intelligence (AI) can help businesses
connect with and manage employees more efficiently, specifically as it pertains to workers who do not
use computers in their everyday work. In this whitepaper, you will learn how AI-driven systems:
• Can be deployed in workforce management
• Reduce friction and create a more unified workforce
• Provide deeper insights into workforce productivity and sentiment

Jillian Hamilton presents on February 25th & 26th 2020 as an Expert to the IEC MSB White Paper on the Future of Safety in Geneva, Switzerland.
Millions of devices that contain electronics, and use or produce electricity, rely on IEC International Standards and Conformity Assessment Systems to perform, fit and work safely together.
Founded in 1906, the IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) is the world’s leading organization for the preparation and publication of International Standards for all electrical, electronic and related technologies. These are known collectively as “electrotechnology”.
IEC provides a platform to companies, industries and governments for meeting, discussing and developing the International Standards they require.
All IEC International Standards are fully consensus-based and represent the needs of key stakeholders of every nation participating in IEC work. Every member country, no matter how large or small, has one vote and a say in what goes into an IEC International Standard.
The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is the world’s leading organization that prepares and publishes International Standards for all electrical, electronic and related technologies.
Close to 20 000 experts from industry, commerce, government, test and research labs, academia and consumer groups participate in IEC Standardization work.
The IEC is one of three global sister organizations (IEC, ISO, ITU) that develop International Standards for the world.
When appropriate, IEC cooperates with ISO (International Organization for Standardization) or ITU (International Telecommunication Union) to ensure that International Standards fit together seamlessly and complement each other. Joint committees ensure that International Standards combine all relevant knowledge of experts working in related areas.
This eBook will cover common characteristics associated with millennials, how they react to the evolution of technology and interact with the world around them, the ways businesses need to adjust, and what this means for the future of work.

5. White collar worker exploitation
It runs in the capitalists’ nature to
extract and exploit the surplus value
created by their employees as much as
possible in order to ensure their
maximized profit. The more surplus
value they appropriate, the higher
chance for them to be steps ahead of
their competitors in the market.
6. The surplus value is the unpaid
labor created by workers in
excess of their own labor costs.
This free of charge value will
invariably be exploited by
capitalists as long as capitalism
exists.
7. The patterns of white collar worker exploitation
1.Paying the wages
in form of salary
Once the wages are paid monthly
not hourly, employers expect their
workers to continue working on
the assigned jobs until finish even
it takes more than 8 hours per day to
do so. No matter how many extra
hours they work, they usually are
not entitled to overtime
since the employers will
claim that their salary
has already surpassed
the hourly wage rate.
8. The patterns of white collar worker exploitation
2.Manipulating the workers
to self-exploit
・Nurture the
work culture
that honor
the employees
who sacrifice
their
everything for
work.
・Motivate the workers to
willingly work harder with
salary increases and promotion.
・Take advantage from what
the workers invest on their
own to improve or
enhance their
work performance.
9. A survey through
systematic questionnaire,
collecting data from
random 200 white collar
workers in Bangkok who
own smartphones. The
survey was conducted from
November 4 to December
13, 2015
10. Generation X and Y

independent variables
since generations are
related to the evolution
period of technology
from analog to digital.
11. The findings assert that smartphones
provoke the workers’ self exploitation in 2 aspects:
・willing to work in the unpaid hours
・invest in pricey technology and
let the employers take advantage
of its benefit for free
12. WILLING TO WORK IN THE UNPAID HOURS
Smartphones break the limitation of where and
when the respondents work.
This offers the leeway for the surplus value
exploitation
since work can reach them anytime, which
mostly happens at unpaid labor time
beyond office hours.

15. LET EMPLOYERS TAKE ADVANTAGE FOR FREE
With the high performance of connectivity, useful
applications along with their sleek designs that enable
portability, smartphones drastically help the
respondents to increase the productivity and profits
working for their capitalist companies or employers.
However, the data evidently shows that more than 90%
of employers ignore to share the expenses incurred
from the smartphones (both smartphone price and its
service fees) with the respondents.

19. Answer: White collar workers willingly exploit themselves by working
beyond office hours for free
in order to showcase that their advanced and pricey smartphones can
facilitate them to work wherever and whenever
to people around them especially their colleagues.
At the same time, they automatically and unsuspectingly
accept the exploitation of the surplus value they have been creating in those
unpaid hours.
21. It can be inferred that the reason the respondents unquestionably agree
to pay a large sum of money to possess smartphones is to use them as
the indicator of their status quo in the society apart from answering
their other demands. This is in accordance with Veblen’s Conspicuous
consumption that people consume luxurious goods to reflect their
social status.
22. Conclusion: Apart from increasing the profits and productivity for
employers, the technologies in smartphones also help intensify the
exploitation rate by provoking white collar workers to exploit
themselves. Smartphones also present the employers the golden
opportunity to reap the benefits from what employees have
invested without sowing anything. Employers simply have to ensure
their employees work during the unpaid time as much as possible.
