Truganini was the last surviving Tasmanian aborigine, dying in 1876. She was born around 1812 on Bruny Island to Chief Mangana. In the 1830s, protector of aborigines George Augustus Robinson moved Truganini and other aborigines to Flinders Island in an attempt to isolate and save them, but most died of disease. After surviving on Flinders Island and Oyster Cove, Truganini perished in 1873 at Oyster Cove and asked for her ashes to be scattered, but they were not scattered until April, two years after she was buried at the Female Factory in Cascades.
