The Colosseum was the largest amphitheater in the Roman world, with a perimeter of 545 meters built out of travertine stone and iron clamps. Begun in AD 70 under Emperor Vespasian and finished by his son Titus in AD 80, it hosted daily shows including wild animal hunts, public executions, and gladiatorial contests that entertained crowds from all classes of Roman society.
