The Aztec Emperor Moctezuma was unsure whether to welcome Hernán Cortés as a god or see him as an enemy when Cortés arrived in the Americas. Moctezuma organized a reception with gifts for Cortés through allies Texcoco and Tacuba, welcoming Cortés' group. Cortés responded by saying he came in the name of a powerful lord and god who ruled the world.
