The document summarizes the creation of "The CD-ROM Cabinet", a project to document and preserve CD-ROM artworks from the 1990s and early 2000s. It describes collecting 82 CD-ROM artworks over 6 months, documenting them through disk images, photos, and video. It notes efforts to make some works accessible online and a hackathon to experiment with obsolete formats. It recommends a distributed and sustainable approach to ongoing documentation and accessibility of the artworks.

Museum x.0: Digital Future or Firewood Rental?Thomas Tunsch
Museum objects have been incompletely digitized in terms of quantity so far. The quality of digitization also shows shortcomings. In addition to the standardized and structured collection of extrinsic data, the complete collection of intrinsic data is not only a special challenge but also an indispensable necessity for modeling digital twins.
So far, Digitalization is mainly limited to the simple representation of analog objects with the help of digital media. Communication structures and methods of Web 2.0 or the semantic web are lacking, thus a comprehensive, standardized and complex structured digital information space for museum objects is not yet possible.
The digital information space is a prerequisite for the creation of digital twins. The ideational value of the objects as a basis of cultural heritage can be found in the long-term available data and their use. Therefore, the power of disposal and interpretative authority over the originals must be replaced by collaborative structures and the collective use of resources in order to guarantee the future of the museum in the information space.

The Cataloguing Case Studies session will explore metadata migration, workflows, cloud computing, and tagging and how they can be applied to digital collections. Mary Alexander of the University of Alabama will present on the second of two migrations that have taken place at the University of Alabama Libraries and the importance of metadata schema and workflows in that process. Joshua Polansky of the University of Washington will describe his automated workflow using optical character recognition (OCR), Apple Automator, and Microsoft Excel to speed the process of collecting metadata for 75,000 digital assets. Elizabeth Berenz of ARTstor will look at the advantages of cloud based software for image management using Shared Shelf as a working example. And finally Ian McDermott will demonstrate the advantages of expert tagging and annotation in improving metadata. Writer and commentator Adam Gopnik has described the mindful museum as a place that is primarily about the objects it contains while also recognizing that it should not seek to explain what cannot be explained. “And that means simply that wall labels and explanatory text of all kinds should be as modest and invisible as conceivable,” he said in the first annual Eva Holtby Lecture on Contemporary Culture at Toronto’s Royal Ontario Museum just months before the ROM opened its Michael Lee-Chin Crystal addition in June 2007. How should museums interpret Gopnik’s view in today’s world of flat screens and wireless networks and one where most museum and gallery visitors can receive instant information via their cell phones, Blackberrys and iPods. And where does that leave the ROM as it grapples with technology solutions for providing context and interpretation in its powerful new gallery spaces? Keynote talk for the Baltic Audiovisual Archival Council conference 2018 - 7-9 November in Tallinn, Estonia
http://www.baacouncil.org/cnf-2018
Presentation description:
Since the mid-2000s, cultural institutions around the world have worked together with Wikimedia volunteers in hundreds of collaboration projects. In these GLAM-Wiki projects, cultural organizations make their collections and specialized knowledge more widely accessible via the free encyclopedia Wikipedia and the free media repository Wikimedia Commons. In the past five years, Wikidata (Wikimedia's free, multilingual knowledge base) has gained a lot of influence in this area as well. As a very accessible and re-usable structured data and semantic web project, it has become a popular instrument for cultural institutions to publish collections as Linked Open Data, obtain multilingual data, place their collections in a much broader context, and enrich their collections with crowdsourced metadata. In 2017-19, Wikimedia Commons is also enhanced with structured data from Wikidata, with much improved APIs that make more smooth collaboration in GLAM-Wiki projects possible.
This keynote presentation provides a short overview of GLAM-Wiki collaborations and their impact, with special attention for the potential and use of Linked Open Data via Wikidata and via structured data on Wikimedia Commons. It includes examples of GLAM-Wiki projects by audiovisual archives and collections around the world.

4. The CD-ROM Cabinet?
Wikipedia:
A cabinet of curiosities was an
encyclopedic collection in Renaissance
Europe of types of objects whose
categorical boundaries were yet to be
defined. They were also known by various
names such as Cabinet of Wonder, and in
German Kunstkammer (“art room”) or
Wunderkammer (“wonder-room”).

20. Work To Do still…
• Voyager CD-ROMs -> US organisation to tackle
this?
• artintact series -> ZKM to tackle this?
• Many key pieces not yet covered: antirom,
audiorom, the Blam! series… -> let’s make
this a distributed effort?
• Difficult CD-ROMs were skipped (multi-disc,
Quicktime, broken copies)
• Inventory not complete
• Art historical overview is due (predecessor
to ebooks, apps, interactive storytelling;
the broader context of ‘intimate’ pieces for
common personal computing devices)
21. I would recommend…
• Sustainability and a
distributed approach – don’t
put it in our own silos, but
use existing platforms that
(hopefully) will last a while.
• First step: make it (easily)
accessible (=downloadable) and
findable by ‘civilians’
• Simple, readable documentation
CD-ROMs only, no DVDs Artworks made specifically for this medium 1994-2001 approximately Works are mostly self-contained interactive pieces, made for viewing on a personal computer Game-like pieces, anti-interfaces, interactive narration; a lot of experimentation with interaction patterns and paradigms Packaging was often interesting; some came as complements to books National ‘scenes’?
