1) The narrator describes himself as previously kind and loving, with a fondness for animals, especially his black cat Pluto.
2) However, over time the narrator develops a drinking problem which causes him to become angry and abusive, even hurting Pluto on one occasion by cutting out one of the cat's eyes.
3) Feeling remorse, the narrator later hangs Pluto from a tree in a drunken rage, only to wake and find his house burned down with the shape of the hanging cat imprinted in the remaining wall.
