1. Когда-то Испанией правил
добрый король Альфонсо.
Он узнал, что его
придворные пажи забывают
перед едой испросить
благословения Божьего, и он
решил преподать им урок.
There was once a good king
called Alfonso. Now it came
to the ears of this king that
the pages at his court
forgot to ask God’s blessing
on their daily meals. King
Alfonso decided to teach
them a lesson.
The Banquet
2. Король Альфонсо
пригласил их всех на
пир. Стол был уставлен
яствами, и пажи ели с
большим удовольствием,
но ни один из них не
попросил Божьего
благословения.
The king invited them to a
banquet which they all
attended. The table was
spread with all sorts of good
food. The people in the castle
ate with evident relish; but
none of them remembered to
ask God’s blessing on the
food.
3. Во время пира в зал вошел
грязный нищий, одетый в
лохмотья. Он сел за
королевский стол и стал пить
и есть, как ни в чем ни
бывало. Пажи были
поражены, и они ждали, что
король велит прогнать его.
Но Альфонсо не проронил
ни слова.
During the feast a beggar
entered, dirty and ill-clad.
He seated himself at the
royal table and ate and
drank to his heart’s
content. At first the pages
were amazed and they
expected that the king
would order him away. But
Alfonso said never a word.
4. Закончив есть, нищий встал
и вышел, не сказав ни слова
благодарности. Пажи
больше не могли молчать.
«Какой презренный, дурной
человек!» — шумели они.
Но король приказал им
умолкнуть и спокойно
сказал: «Вы все еще более
дерзкие, чем этот нищий.
Каждый день вы садитесь
за еду, которую вам по
Своей щедрости послал ваш
Небесный Отец, но не
спрашиваете у Него ни
благословения, ни
благодарите Его».
When the beggar had
finished, he rose and left
without a word of thanks.
Then the people could
keep silence no longer.
“What a rude fellow!”
they cried.
But the king silenced them
and said, “My dear friends,
you have been bolder and
more discourteous than
this beggar. Every day you
sit down to a table supplied
by your Heavenly Father,
but you don’t take the time
to ask Him to bless your
food or thank Him for His
care and supply.”
