ALAN YAU OBE
Our OBE recipient, is a seasoned entrepreneur who has created successful and ventures such as Wagamama, Hakkasan,
Busaba Eathai, Yauatcha and Princi. He is world renowned for bringing Eastern restaurant experiences to the masses
and successfully introduced Western palettes to Eastern fusion cuisine.
His creative mediums of choice being restaurant design and gastronomic creativity, he influenced the expansion of an
entirely new industry, and he has largely owned the concepts behind contemporary presentation of traditional Chinese
and oriental food. The rise of a new generation of restaurateurs, artisan chefs and celebrated culinary establishments has
been a direct result of this individual changing the landscape of British multicultural dining experiences.
In 2016, he pivoted from hardware (bricks and mortar) to software through founding the tech start up Softchow: A
qualitative taste aggregation and discovery marketplace that is community driven, with the ultimate mission - no food
regrets. For the last +15 years, he has worked on numerous projects across the globe through his consultancy company
AYU that specialises in incubating, uplifting and delivering restaurant concepts transcending all verticals of the industry.
Projects ranged from The Peking Duck Specialist Eatery, Jing Yaa Tang, at the Opposite House in Beijing to the bespoke
Dim Sum House, Yaumay, in Marunouchi Tokyo.
He regularly gives talks around topics such as “Is it worthwhile investing in branding in gastronomy (Impact & Residual
Benefit)”, “How to increase the soft power of a country through gastronomy” and “Disrupting Taste through
technology”.

MUSHTAQ AHMED
A former Cricketer described as being one of the best three wrist-spinners in world. World renowned for his bowling
skill, this skilled practitioner competed at a world-class level throughout a professional career spanning 13 years from
1990 to 2003.
He made his first-class cricket debut in January 1987, at the age of 16 and made his full international debut two short
years later in March 1989, playing a One Day International against Sri Lanka. This individual continued to perform at
elevated level throughout 1992, leading to the Pakistan Cricket teams Cricket World Cup win.
Through his most fruitful years of Professional Cricket, he played his first spell of county cricket, appearing for
Somerset from 1993 and 1998. For this time period Eddie Lawrence describes him as "one of Somerset's best-ever
"overseas" signings." He played 62 first-class matches for the county, with an exceptional scorecard of 289 wickets. In
1997, he was named amongst the Wisden Cricketers of the Year, in which he was described as being a member of "a
glittering triumvirate of wrist-spinners who adorn the modern game."
In 2014, he was appointed Pakistan cricket team's bowling consultant and in April 2016, he was selected to act as
head coach of Pakistan's National Cricket Academy.
In November 2018 he was appointed as the assistant coach and spin consultant of West Indies national cricket team.
This evening we recognise a prolific sporting career followed by a foundation building effort in coaching the new crop
of tomorrows athletes and award this sports superstar with the Award for Outstanding Achievement in Sport.

ARJUN WANEY OBE
This gentleman earned outstanding success initially in investment management and the retail business with Pier 1
Imports Inc in the US. He is now Chairman, Managing Director and Principal shareholder of Argent Fund Management
Limited.
His Midas touch in the restaurant business started with the highly acclaimed Japanese brands Zuma, Roka and Coya,
which he co-founded with Rainer Becker and which have gone on to achieve remarkable and enduring success.
In 2001, he founded the Savitri Waney Charitable Trust to make a difference to those living in poverty. The Trust is
named in memory of his late mother. He was keen to apply his business acumen to his philanthropic endeavours.
Since founding the Charitable Trust, this OBE recipient, has led the Trust in donating over £8 million to carefully
selected charitable causes including blindness, malnutrition, education, the environment and palliative care. Perhaps
the most ambitious programme involves ending blindness in Bihar, one of India’s most deprived states where an
estimated 2.4 million people suffer with cataracts. The Trust has funded over 250,000 cataract surgeries and most
recently, a new eye hospital.
This individuals’ selfless efforts in giving aid and care to his fellow countrymen allow us to recognise and award him
Philanthropist of the Year.

NITIN SAWHNEY CBE
His name is synonymous with musical fusion. He is a UK grown music producer, performer and composer. He was
raised in Rochester, Kent, England, by Punjabi immigrant parents and as a child he studied piano, classical and
flamenco guitar, sitar and tabla. Having dropped out of university to pursue his promising musical career, he
continues to stand out above his contemporaries for his dedication to the arts from more than just a musical
perspective.
His discography includes a collection of mainstream productions, alongside a long list of world-class collaborators
including, Paul McCartney, Sting, The London Symphony Orchestra, A.R. Rahman, Ellie Goulding and Shakira.
His musical accolades include 10 studio albums and numerous works for film and TV. His vast talent has also earned
him acting, writing and directing credits and has received 17 major national awards for his album work and is a
recipient of the Ivor Novello Lifetime Achievement award in 2017. His work on film and TV scores have earned him a
nomination for a BAFTA for the 2011 BBC documentary series, narrated by David Attenborough ‘Human Planet’.
Most recently he has produced the score for the Netflix original adventure-drama, Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle and
he has accepted a prestigious CBE at the 2019 New Years Honours.
Tonight, the Award for Outstanding Achievement in Music goes to this highly accomplished creative professional
and artist…

NITIN GANATRA
Appearing in the 2013 series ‘Who Do You Think You Are?’ this individuals family origin and history have been
explored on-screen. He is Kenyan born, with roots in Gujurat, India – overlain by his British upbringing from the age
of 3, have allowed him to become a beacon of successful cultural diversity and one of the most beloved personalities
on British TV.
Recognised as one of the most iconic and nationally renowned Television characters, from the single most popular
episodic show in Britain today; this talented actor steers his career from strength to strength. He has been a
mainstay on the BBC soap-opera Eastenders cast since 2007 with over 700 episodes and he’s gone on to win multiple
awards both personally and as part of the Eastenders ensemble, because of his success on the show.
In 2009 he was awarded “Best On-screen Partnership’ alongside his co-star Nina Wadia, by the British Soap Awards
2009, followed by a nomination for ‘Best Actor’ in 2010.
This individuals body of work includes feature films such as Tim Burton’s adaptation of Charlie & the Chocolate
Factory, in which he stars as the Prince of Pondicherry, as well as a supporting role in Gurinder Chadas smash ‘Bride &
Prejudice’.
And This year we honour his Outstanding Achievement in Television.

OUTSTANDING
CONTRIBUTION TO THE
COMMUNITY
VICHAI SRIVADDHANAPRABHA
This communitarians profound generosity and impact on the city of Leicester are to be remembered as the triumphs
of a man who lived to serve his community.
He was known to enmesh himself in community development programmes and ventures and, as a result, touched the
lives of many. Among his countless extraordinary achievements, this individual helped connect cultural divides and
made an astonishing contribution to the community of Leicester. He won the hearts and minds of Leicester by
demonstrating that a community can work together for a common good giving no mind to economic backgrounds,
religions or origins. He knew he could change the community for the better and his legacy will continue with the
public’s support for the charities.
He used his platform to rebuild something that the community of Leicester could unite around. At a time when the
Football club was riddled with debt and looked to be a directionless business, he used his time and influence to
transform Leicester City Football Club into a sporting brand to be reckoned with, leading the Club to a remarkable
Premier League title victory in 2016.
Notable charitable deeds include a £1 million donation to the nearby Royal Leicester Infirmary. Also whilst
celebrating his 60th birthday he gave away 60 free season tickets to dedicated fans and hosted a party for young
hospital patients. He was also involved in the funding and donation of life saving equipment and scanners to the
children’s intensive care unit of the infirmary.
Our winner championed Leicester; never losing faith in the Football club and devoted his creativity and time to the
city. Tonight we honour this gentleman with the award for Outstanding Contribution to the Community.

RISING STAR AWARD
RIKA
A new and fresh Pop sensation; our recipient this evening is the first female teen British Asian artist to be signed by
Virgin EMI Universal Music Group. She became one of the very few artists of Indian heritage to sign for such a global
international label at such a young age. She joins the likes of Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber, Katy Perry, Shawn Mendes,
Rihanna, Kanye West – household names that are signed with Virgin EMI.
In her rapidly ascending career her music has been championed by BBC Radio 1, as Best New Pop and Tune of The
Weekend, for her released singles. BBC Asia Network has further promoted her work as the Future Sound of 2018.
This individual has been critically acclaimed from the likes of The Metro, Hunger Magazine and featured in the
prestigious Wonderland Magazine. She has also landed features in Rolling Stones India and Vogue India as the next
best pop act.
She has recently successfully completed an international tour performing to over 10,000 people, followed by an
invitation to perform for a musical project on Queens official YouTube channel in celebration the release of the
"Bohemian Rhapsody: Queen” Movie.
She has just released her latest single, as she continues to cement her place as one of the freshest pop stars to keep
your eye on.
Now, she takes home the award for Rising Star of 2019.

CRAZY RICH ASIANS
Directed by Jon M. Chu and adapted from the 2013 novel of the same name by Kevin Kwan, the film became the
highest grossing American romantic comedy in a decade.
The film is also recognised as the first major Hollywood studio feature to be made up of a majority cast of Asian
actors in a modern day setting since 1993, with Constance Wu and Henry Golding leading the ensemble.
Accolades for the movie notably include Golden Globe Awards earning nominations for Best Motion Picture –
Musical or Comedy and Best Actress – Motion Picture Comedy or Musical. It also received four nominations at the
24th Critics' Choice Awards, winning one for Best Comedy, and a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding
Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture at the 25th Screen Actors Guild Awards.
The hit movie has been rated 7.6 out of 10 on the popular movie review website IMDB, and an approval rating of 91%
on Rotten Tomatoes. Following these successes along with a box office gross of 238 million dollars worldwide, two
sequels are currently in development. The film is a shining example of cultural diversity blazing the trail for new
opportunities in Hollywood.
It gives us great pleasure to honour cast and crew of this ground breaking film, with the award for Outstanding
Achievement in Cinema.

PROFESSOR JIM AL-KHALILI OBE FRS
This celebrity academic is a theoretical physicist at the University of Surrey where he holds a joint chair in physics
and in the public engagement in science. He achieved his PhD in nuclear reaction theory and has since published
over 100 papers and studies in the field. He is currently exploring the application of quantum mechanics in biology
and has set up the world’s first doctoral training centre in quantum biology.
He is a prominent author and broadcaster; his prominence highlighted by him being chosen as one of twenty-one
"Faces of UK Science" for an exhibition in London's National Portrait Gallery. He has written 14 books which have
been translated into twenty-six languages. He is well known to the British public as a presenter of science
documentaries and in 2012 he began hosting the award-winning BBC Radio 4 programme, The Life Scientific to
critical acclaim.
His contributions to the sciences and education field have been recognised and appreciated through his receipt of
awards and accolades such as his appointment of OBE in 2008, inaugural winner of the Stephen Hawking Medal
for Science Communication in 2019 and most recently elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 2018.
We further applaud his achievements this evening, by awarding this individual the ‘Outstanding Achievement in
Science’

TAWAKKOL KARMAN
Born in 1979 in Yemen, this individual is a human rights activist, journalist and politician. Known as the “mother of
the revolution”, “the iron woman” and “the lady of the Arab Spring,” She played a key role in the 2011 pro-
democracy youth uprising in Yemen. She was awarded the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize, along in recognition of her
leadership in non-violent struggle and her advocacy against authoritarianism, corruption, and oppression. She is the
first Arab woman and the second Muslim woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize, and at the time was the youngest
recipient at 32.
Following the footsteps of her inspirations, Martin Luther King and Mahatma Gandhi, she has become one of the
pioneer leaders in the Middle East to promote the culture of non-violence to fight political oppression and bring
institutional change. In a male-dominated tribal country, she caught the attention and admiration of the world and
international media for her fearless leadership as a young woman mobilizing thousands of Yemenis in her call for the
social activism. Through her non-violent approach, she was able to reverse the stereotypical image that portrayed
her country Yemen as a source of terrorism and violence. Along with her revolutionary comrades, she has proven to
the world how peaceful and aspiring to peace the Yemeni people are.
She always defines herself as a universal citizen with the global message of equal citizenship and equal humanity.
She always calls for co-existence between different cultures, religions, and politics. She holds a strong position
against authoritarianism, dictatorship, and oppression.
As a leader and inspirational figure, helping an entire generation aspire to achieving cultural change, we honour her
this evening with the award for Social Entrepreneur of the year…

BUSINESS LEADER OF THE YEAR
ANAND BURMAN
He is an Indian business magnate with a personal net worth of $6 billion dollars. As the chairman of Dabur a leading
consumer goods company, he is included in the Top 20 richest Indians in the world and featured on the Forbes lists.
He was born in 1951 to a business orientated family from Punjab and he finished his initial school education at St.
Paul's School in Darjeeling, India. He graduated from his degree programme in chemistry from the University of
Wisconsin and went on to attain his doctorate in pharmaceutical chemistry from the University of Kansas.
He took up the position for managing research and development in the family business, Dabur, in 1980. He worked his
way up to a seat on the executive board in 1986 and trailblazed his way to the position of chairman in 2007.
He is also one of the founders of Asian healthcare fund and sits on the board of directors for more than 30 companies
including Hero Motocorp, Aviva Life Insurance, Ester Industries and Interx Laboratories. He has served as an
independent non-executive director of Hindustan Motors Ltd and founded a non-profit organisation Sundesh
supporting for healthcare and education.
He has been previously recognised with awards and accolades including, one of 14 finalists from India in EY
Entrepreneur of the Year 2011 as well as, Camden FB Top 50 family business leaders in 2013.
Following a partnership with the Indian government, Dabur is developing 2 Ayurvedic drugs, for malaria and diabetes
highlighting him as a shining example of a business leader, giving back.
