Thanksgiving Day originated from a mix of European and Native American harvest festival traditions. In Europe, harvest festivals were held before and after to give thanks for a good harvest and celebrate togetherness. Native Americans also celebrated the end of harvest seasons. When Europeans arrived, they brought their harvest traditions, celebrating safe voyages and peace. The first Thanksgiving is traditionally associated with a 1621 celebration shared between Pilgrims and Wampanoag Native Americans after surviving a difficult first year in Plymouth colony and having a successful harvest. Today, Thanksgiving is celebrated as a secular North American holiday with religious origins centered around expressing gratitude, family, and harvest.
