Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).

Mỡ tập trung ở một phần cơ thể như: bụng, ngực hoặc có biểu hiện đau thắt ngực, khó thở,
huyết áp cao, xơ vữa động mạch... đã được xem là dấu hiệu và biến chứng của béo phì, theo các
chuyên gia của chương trình "Tư vấn giảm cân an toàn".
Chương trình "Tư vấn giảm cân an toàn" diễn ra trên VnExpress thu hút sự quan tâm của độc giả
khắp mọi miền khi số câu hỏi gửi về tòa soạn nhờ bác sĩ tư vấn ngày càng tăng. Sau một tuần diễn ra
(từ 15/12 đến ngày 21/12), chương trình đã nhận hơn 1.100 câu hỏi gồm các thắc mắc xoay quanh
vấn đề thể trạng, trọng lượng cơ thể chưa được như mong muốn.
Theo đánh giá của 4 chuyên gia dinh dưỡng hàng đầu trực tiếp tư vấn cho độc giả suốt 7 ngày qua,
gần 64% người thừa cân, béo phì bị béo bụng. Trong số đó, rất nhiều người chỉ số khối cơ thể của họ
vẫn duy trì ở mức bình thường cho phép nhưng mỡ lại chỉ tập trung ở vùng bụng, nội tạng khiến
vòng eo rất lớn. Trong đó, nữ giới chiếm tỷ lệ áp đảo (gần 80%), và khoảng 20% nam giới rơi vào
tình huống này. Điều này cho thấy, nhiều phụ nữ không nhận ra mình đã hoặc sắp có nguy cơ béo phì
để phòng ngừa hay có biện pháp điều tiết lại trọng lượng cơ thể. Tình trạng này gọi là béo phì thể ẩn.
Mặc dù sở hữu chỉ số khối cơ thể BMI nằm trong ngưỡng tiêu chuẩn (chiều cao 1,55m, cân nặng 47
kg và BMI 19,8), chị Nguyễn Thị Lụa (quận 3, TP HCM) băn khoăn với vòng eo "nổi trội" của mình
(67cm). Do đặc thù công việc văn phòng nên chị ít khi vận động, thời gian tập thể dục gần như
không có. Theo Thạc sĩ, bác sĩ Đào Thị Yến Phi, vòng eo này khá lớn so với chiều cao của chị Lụa
và cần luyện các bài tập, điều chỉnh chế độ ăn, vì chị đã rơi vào tình trạng béo phì thể ẩn.
Anh Tô Gia Phát (34 tuổi, TP HCM) cũng trăn trở về vòng bụng 110cm dù thân hình cân đối với
chiều cao 1m70, cân nặng 72 kg. Ngày nào anh cũng dành ra vài chục phút cố gắng tập bụng nhưng
kích cỡ vòng 2 không thể cải thiện. Gửi câu hỏi về chương trình, anh xin tư vấn giải pháp thu gọn mỡ
bụng, chứ không cho rằng bản thân mình đã bị béo phì.
Đây chỉ là 2 trong hàng trăm trường hợp thắc mắc của độc giả nhờ bác sĩ giải thích vì sao chỉ số cơ
thể BMI của mình vẫn ở mức an toàn nhưng vóc dáng vẫn mất cân đối.
2. Nhiều chị em có chỉ số BMI bình thường nhưng tỷ lệ mỡ cơ thể vượt chuẩn.
Chỉ số khối cơ thể BMI là một trong những cách xác định nguy cơ và mức độ thừa cân, béo phì phổ
biến. BMI được tính bằng cách lấy cân nặng (kg) chia cho bình phương chiều cao (m). Theo tiêu
chuẩn châu Á, nếu chỉ số BMI trên 23 là thừa cân, trên 25 là béo phì (béo phì độ 1: 25-30; độ 2: 30-
35 và độ 3: trên 35).
Tuy nhiên, theo Trung tâm kiểm soát và phòng ngừa dịch bệnh Mỹ (CDC), thước đo này không phải
lúc nào cũng đúng. Do cân nặng bao gồm cả cơ và mỡ, nên một số người có chỉ số BMI cao nhưng tỷ
lệ mỡ lại thấp (vận động viên, cầu thủ bóng đá, người tập thể hình...). Ngược lại, nhiều người có BMI
thấp nhưng tỷ lệ mỡ lại cao, tập trung ở các vùng bụng, ngực đối với nam và eo, mông, đùi đối với
nữ. Nghiên cứu trên 13.601 dân trong cuộc Điều tra Y tế và Dinh dưỡng Quốc gia lần thứ ba tại Mỹ
cho thấy, có hơn một nửa cá nhân xác định sai nguy cơ và mức độ thừa cân béo phì khi sử dụng BMI.
Thước đo chính xác hơn là xác định lượng mỡ dư thừa, vượt quá 30% (nữ) hoặc 25% (nam) trọng
lượng cơ thể thì được coi là béo phì. Người có BMI bình thường nhưng tỷ lệ mỡ vượt mức an toàn
