- 1. Texas Woman’s University Student Group Supports Former Foster Kids Melissa Tonn
- 2. Introduction A board-certified occupational medicine physician, Melissa Tonn serves as the president and chief medical officer of OccMD Group, P.A., in Dallas, Texas. Aside from her work managing occupational health programs for Dallas-based businesses, Melissa Tonn lends support to former foster children through her generous donation to Texas Woman’s University’s (TWU’s) emergency relief fund for students who have aged out of foster care. In order to support young people pursuing higher education who lack the financial and emotional support offered by parents, TWU offers the Tonn financial assistance for unforeseen emergencies as well as a student-led support organization called Success for the Future. The student group offers a social support network and mentorship to TWU students who have experienced foster care, homelessness, or adoption. Success for the Future partners with social services agencies such as the Department of Family and Protective Services and school districts to offer guidance to under-supported youth as they transition to adulthood and embark on higher education. The group’s initiatives include events like birthday parties for impacted students, group holiday meals, study breaks, and other relationship-building activities.
