The Naples Public Health Evaluation (PHE) was a comprehensive study conducted from 2008-2011 to assess potential health risks for U.S. personnel in Naples, Italy due to illegal waste dumping. A robust risk communication program was critical to inform stakeholders, build trust, and ensure transparency. Key aspects of the successful program included: designating dedicated public affairs staff, establishing an on-base health information center, developing activity-specific communication plans, using multiple communication channels, and obtaining leadership support. Through a proactive, coordinated effort the PHE team was able to address community concerns and mitigate risks.
