The Sino-Japanese War was fought between China and Japan from August 1894 to April 1895 over control of Korea. Japan emerged victorious after a series of battles and took control of Taiwan and parts of Manchuria. While the physical war lasted less than a year, tensions between the two countries continued and led to the Second Sino-Japanese War 40 years later.
