Chapin Griffith interned at Tesla Motors on their chassis engineering team. His performance was rated highly in several areas, including overall performance, technical aptitude, relations with others, ability to learn, attitude, and dependability. He was able to take over a large project and bring it near completion quickly. Chapin also demonstrated strong self-learning abilities, communicating skills, and a positive work attitude. The evaluation recommends Chapin for either a return internship or full-time employment based on his consistently meeting and exceeding expectations.
Tesla 14 Jan 09 Intern Final Evaluation - Chapin Griffith
1. INTERN & CO-OP FINAL EVALUATION
1
OVERALL PERFORMANCE GREAT - Consistently meets all expectations and often exceeds them.
COMMENTS Chapin has been a real asset to the chassis team. He was able to pick up a basically
dead project and grab the control by the reins. When Chapin started, he was assigned
a very large and open project and was able to take that project to near completion in a
very short time span. He was able to learn new skills, communicate with many teams,
and take the project to completion
OVERALL TECHNICAL APTITUDE GOOD - Meets all expectations and sometimes exceeds them.
COMMENTS At Tesla we strive for self learners, and Chapin proved himself in this regard. While his
experience and background did not lend himself to the project, Chapin was able to
learn about steering systems, hydraulic test rigs, control systems, electrical wiring and
make the whole thing come together. It is this kind of active learning that helped him
succeed at Tesla, and will help him succeed in future endeavours.

RELATIONS WITH OTHERS GREAT - Consistently meets all expectations and often exceeds them.
COMMENTS As was discussed earlier in overall aptitude, Chapin was required to work with other
teams. He had the chance to be very independent, meeting with potential suppliers for
test system components, working with other team’s engineers on design and
fabrication, and even guiding work requests. He was able to see all aspects of
engineering interaction and handled each very professionally and with class.
COMMUNICATION GOOD - Meets all expectations and sometimes exceeds them.
COMMENTS It is important for a engineer to communicate with others involved in what he/she might
be working on; as was said in ‘Relations with Others’, Chapin is very adept at this.
QUALITY OF WORK GOOD - Meets all expectations and sometimes exceeds them.
COMMENTS This intership was very demanding from a project scope, and Cahpin was able to meet
more than we expected. Despite a slow start of learning the tools required to get the
job down, he was able to build an entire steering test rig which utilized our steering
robot. This included many different aspects of engineering, from mechanical design to
electrical control systems, to wiring. The result is a system that will be used for months
to come here at Tesla.
ABILITY TO LEARN GREAT - Consistently meets all expectations and often exceeds them.
COMMENTS When we hired Chapin, we knew he did not have the background knowledge to come
in and complete the project we had planned for him. He would have to learn new tools
and concepts to get it done. He learned CATIA, taught himself about hydraulic and

control systems, and how steering systems work and what is important to defining
there capability. All f this in the span of three months was quite impressive.
ATTITITUDE TO WORK OUTSTANDING - Consistently exceeds all expectations; results are the highest
standard of excellence.
COMMENTS Chapin has a energizing attitude, A never say no style. This is by far one of the most
important characteristics I believe a young enginner can have. It is infectous and
inspiring.
DEPENDABILITY OUTSTANDING - Consistently exceeds all expectations; results are the highest standard
of excellence.
COMMENTS To me this is a binary thing. Either you are dependable or your not. Chapin is, simple
as that. We assign a task and he does the work to get it done, no questions. That is
dependable.

AREAS OF EXCELLENCE
1) Attitude toward Work – See above.
2) Understanding and eagerness to move forward. I suppose this a combination of attitude and ability to learn,
but what it means to me is that Chapin will always succeed.
3) Ability to Learn – See above.
ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT
1) Time Management versus End Game – This is always difficult for young engineers, it comes with
experience and trust in their own ability, but it is crucial in succeeding.
2) Realworld Background Knowledge – Most of us on the team dabble in modifying cars and racecars outside
work. This always helps us on the job. Chapin recently got in to working on his old RX, which will help in his
day to day work regardless of where he decides to take his career. There is no replacement for hands on
expierence in what you are working on.

COMMENTS
and/or
CONCERNS
As said previously, Chapin was a great asset to the team and learned quickly.
Depending on his future plans, we should look to extend his time here at Tesla whether
it be by Internship or Full-time.
