Integrating Technology
6 and 7 year old first
graders are capable of
a lot more than one
might think.

The following slides
will outline our Field
Trip to the Shanghai
Zoo and the
procedures for our
technology projects.
At the Zoo...

Students were divided into groups of 2-3 with
each parent volunteer. Each parent had a digital
camera and each student had to choose at least
4 mammals with which to have their picture
taken.

The more pictures the students chose to take at
the zoo, the more pictures they would have to
choose from later on.

Students were instructed to read about each
mammal they chose at the habitat site,
however, not all mammals had descriptions in
English! This posed somewhat of a problem, but
students learned to choose other mammals, or
recall information they already knew about the
animal.
Back in the Classroom...

The following day, parent
volunteers uploaded all the
pictures taken onto separate
classroom computers and helped
students to create their own
slideshow using Keynote.

Slideshows were to include 4-5
pictures including a “title slide”
which could be a picture with a
mammal.
Making Connections...

On each slide, students were to
            type a caption about the
            mammal pictured.

Connecting this Field Trip to our
            unit on nonfiction reading/
writing, students were to write a
fact about each mammal, not an
            opinion. For example, “Pandas
            eat bamboo” as opposed to
            “Pandas are cute.”
Double click on each of these
students to see their photo book on
mammals at the zoo!
Still to come...

Now that the slideshows are
complete, students will export
them from Keynote and into
iMovie.

The first graders are fully
capable of doing all of this
themselves after having the
steps modeled for them.

In iMovie, students will be able
to add a voiceover feature. This
will allow them to talk about
their experience at the zoo.
