3. Making the Impossible Possible
Such was the title of a book by Norbert Wiener, the father of cybernetics. In his book, published in
1950, Wiener pondered on the social questions and consequences of automation, at a time when the
computer age was still an idea in a few people's heads.
Meetings may be toxic, but calendars are the superfund sites that allow that toxicity to thrive. All
calendars suck. And they all suck in the same way. Calendars are a record of interruptions. And
quite often they're a battlefield over who owns whose time.
Several key provisions of the USA PATRIOT Act, enacted in the wake of 9/11, have afforded the
government considerable access to electronic communications records. Some of them expire at the
end of May, and their future is mired in uncertainty.
