The Metaverse Is
Going to Be Bigger
Than You Think
The metaverse, at its core, is an embodied internet: a social sphere where people will be
able to meet with the help of personalized avatars that make them feel more present
than a plain video call. It's synchronous, which makes it feel more like real life than today's
feed-based social media. Instead of catching up on what others have been up to, you'll
meet with them in real time.
It will also be persistent, just like the world around us. When you revisit a metaverse
space, you won't have to start over from scratch. And just like real life, it's going to
encompass all kinds of things that you may want to do with other people: go to concerts
and other events, play games, hang out, date and, yes, work and shop.

What is the metaverse?
The expression was coined by writer Neal Stephenson in
his 1992 novel “Snow Crash”.
Ernest Cline later used the same concept to create the
Oasis in his novel “Ready Player One,” which was turned
into a Steven Spielberg film.

The foundations of this new world
Thanks to the metaverse, both teacher and student can meet regardless of their real-world
location.
Then comes the visual possibilities of a metaverse school. Not only can the teacher talk
about their discoveries, but they can also show students in an immersive 3D
environment.
At any point, desks and chairs can give way to an in-person recreation of a historical landmark.
Students can explore as they wish, asking questions and supporting their learning with first-
person experiences.
Roblox started as an educational platform.
Metaverse for education
The cellphone innovation cycle, after nearly two decades of successive iterations and
evolutions, has reached maturity. More than 4.5 billion people already use the
technology. We will have evolutions, not revolutions in this sector.
The crypto movement has huge potential, but it will likely be more of an element of
this wave than the wave itself. The same can be said of NFTs (Non-Fungible Tokens).
In this way, the metaverse is increasingly seen as “the wave”, as it can bring
together all these technologies and function as the axis of a new cycle that
will succeed the web and mobile.

But not so fast

A bright, but unimaginable future
Blockchain, NFTs, games, avatars, augmented and virtual reality will be
the foundations for the metaverse, or the evolution of the web. But our
predictions are often wrong because we use our past analog
experience to predict a digital and exponential future.
Expectation vs. reality
Existing computer systems and technology (VR and AR) are not good enough, we need more
computing power and higher-quality graphics.
We will need a faster internet and 5G will take years to reach everybody
A universal framework that allows users to move seamlessly from one part of the metaverse to
another.
Programming tools simple enough to let anyone create their own virtual domains and
experiences, not just skilled developers.
Developed world will have an advantage from an infrastructure perspective.
What do we need?
A new era of innovation?
In the history of capitalism rapid technological advance has been the norm. The 18th century
brought the Industrial Revolution and mechanised factories; the 19th century railways and
electricity; the 20th century cars, planes, modern medicine and domestic liberation thanks to
washing machines. In the 1970s, though, progress—measured by overall productivity growth—
slowed.
The economic impact was masked for a while by women piling into the workforce, and a burst of
efficiency gains followed the adoption of personal computers in the 1990s. After 2000, though,
growth flagged again. *The Economist
More mental work
We have a flurry of recent discoveries with transformative potential - “messenger rna” technique
behind the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines and Artificial intelligence (DeepMind, GPT-3,
driverless cars)
Booming investment in technology - In the second and third quarters of 2020 America’s non-
residential private sector spent more on computers, software and research and development (R&D)
than on buildings and industrial gear for the first time in over a decade. Elon Musk, who also runs a
rocket firm, is the world’s richest man.
Rapid adoption of new technologies. It is not just that workers have taken to videoconferencing and
consumers to e-commerce. The pandemic has also accelerated the adoptions of digital payments,
telemedicine and industrial automation. The fight against climate change and the great-power
competition between America and China could spur further bold steps
Eventually, synthetic biology, artificial intelligence and robotics could up-end how almost everything
is done.

As of now, the metaverse is not a single technology, nor is it controlled by a single centralized
company or entity.
People will create multiple digital versions of themselves, each tailored for specific
purposes. This will lead to fragmentation—and a widening gap between who a person is in the
physical world, and who they project in various online platforms.
The future of work and education will become more digitally immersive as companies deploy
virtual meeting platforms, digital experiences, and mixed reality worlds.
As more users link their metaverse profiles to personal information
like biometrics, data breaches could prove far more costly.

Online experiences are beginning to take place in virtual 3D environments that emulate
those in the real world, from households and workplaces to event venues and retail shops.
The market for digital real estate, investments, education etc. in the nascent metaverse is subject to
the same opportunities and pitfalls of any trend rush.
Emerging technology tends to outpace the law.
In the wrong hands, synthetic media can be a powerful and dangerous tool in spreading
misinformation and disinformation.
Brands that push beyond their current constraints will offer engaging products and experiences
that could not exist in real life.

The truth is
We will need humans more than ever to mediate interactions and guide younger people in
this new territory. Also, we can learn from our mistakes with mobile and social media.
The platforms and how we used them got out of control (spam, bullying, fake news, attention
deficit, depression…), but we are slowly regaining control.
The future is bright.

The metaverse, at its core, is an embodied internet: a social sphere where people will be able to meet with the help of personalized avatars that make them feel more present than a plain video call. It's synchronous, which makes it feel more like real life than today's feed-based social media. Instead of catching up on what others have been up to, you'll meet with them in real time. It will also be persistent, just like the world around us. When you revisit a metaverse space, you won't have to start over from scratch. And just like real life, it's going to encompass all kinds of things that you may want to do with other people: go to concerts and other events, play games, hang out, date and, yes, work and shop. *Protocol nov/2021 What is the metaverse?
  • 3. The expression was coined by writer Neal Stephenson in his 1992 novel “Snow Crash”. Ernest Cline later used the same concept to create the Oasis in his novel “Ready Player One,” which was turned into a Steven Spielberg film. Metaverse origin

  • 8. Thanks to the metaverse, both teacher and student can meet regardless of their real-world location. Then comes the visual possibilities of a metaverse school. Not only can the teacher talk about their discoveries, but they can also show students in an immersive 3D environment. At any point, desks and chairs can give way to an in-person recreation of a historical landmark.   • 9. The cellphone innovation cycle, after nearly two decades of successive iterations and evolutions, has reached maturity. More than 4.5 billion people already use the technology. We will have evolutions, not revolutions in this sector. The crypto movement has huge potential, but it will likely be more of an element of this wave than the wave itself. The same can be said of NFTs (Non-Fungible Tokens). In this way, the metaverse is increasingly seen as “the wave”, as it can bring together all these technologies and function as the axis of a new cycle that will succeed the web and mobile. A new wave

  • 12. A bright, but unimaginable future Blockchain, NFTs, games, avatars, augmented and virtual reality will be the foundations for the metaverse, or the evolution of the web. But our predictions are often wrong because we use our past analog experience to predict a digital and exponential future.
  • 14. Existing computer systems and technology (VR and AR) are not good enough, we need more computing power and higher-quality graphics. We will need a faster internet and 5G will take years to reach everybody A universal framework that allows users to move seamlessly from one part of the metaverse to another. Programming tools simple enough to let anyone create their own virtual domains and experiences, not just skilled developers. Developed world will have an advantage from an infrastructure perspective.   • 15. A new era of innovation? In the history of capitalism rapid technological advance has been the norm. The 18th century brought the Industrial Revolution and mechanised factories; the 19th century railways and electricity; the 20th century cars, planes, modern medicine and domestic liberation thanks to washing machines. In the 1970s, though, progress—measured by overall productivity growth— slowed. The economic impact was masked for a while by women piling into the workforce, and a burst of efficiency gains followed the adoption of personal computers in the 1990s. After 2000, though, growth flagged again. *The Economist

More mental work We have a flurry of recent discoveries with transformative potential - “messenger rna” technique behind the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines and Artificial intelligence (DeepMind, GPT-3, driverless cars) Booming investment in technology - In the second and third quarters of 2020 America’s non- residential private sector spent more on computers, software and research and development (R&D) than on buildings and industrial gear for the first time in over a decade. Elon Musk, who also runs a rocket firm, is the world’s richest man. Rapid adoption of new technologies. It is not just that workers have taken to videoconferencing and consumers to e-commerce. The pandemic has also accelerated the adoptions of digital payments, telemedicine and industrial automation. The fight against climate change and the great-power competition between America and China could spur further bold steps Eventually, synthetic biology, artificial intelligence and robotics could up-end how almost everything is done.
  • 17. Key Insights (Future Today Institute) As of now, the metaverse is not a single technology, nor is it controlled by a single centralized company or entity. People will create multiple digital versions of themselves, each tailored for specific purposes. This will lead to fragmentation—and a widening gap between who a person is in the physical world, and who they project in various online platforms. The future of work and education will become more digitally immersive as companies deploy virtual meeting platforms, digital experiences, and mixed reality worlds. As more users link their metaverse profiles to personal information like biometrics, data breaches could prove far more costly.

Key insights (Future Today Institute) Online experiences are beginning to take place in virtual 3D environments that emulate those in the real world, from households and workplaces to event venues and retail shops. The market for digital real estate, investments, education etc. in the nascent metaverse is subject to the same opportunities and pitfalls of any trend rush. Emerging technology tends to outpace the law. In the wrong hands, synthetic media can be a powerful and dangerous tool in spreading misinformation and disinformation. Brands that push beyond their current constraints will offer engaging products and experiences that could not exist in real life. Source: Future Today Institute
  • 19. The truth is We will need humans more than ever to mediate interactions and guide younger people in this new territory. Also, we can learn from our mistakes with mobile and social media. The platforms and how we used them got out of control (spam, bullying, fake news, attention deficit, depression…), but we are slowly regaining control. The future is bright.
