STELLA – Overview
TELI-G | Tufts University | 1-17-2015
• Many systems can be modeled:
TELI-G | Tufts University | Spring 2016
• We can increase a stock by:
• Decreasing the outflow
• Use less oil
• Increasing the inflow
• Find more oil
(Meadows, 2008)
Remember – look at the dynamic of the
system as a whole – the function of the
system is key!
STELLA – How to start
TELI-G | Tufts University | 1-17-2015
• Define system boundaries
• Remember – list your components (e.g. Antje)
• List the assumptions
• As you connect components
• Causal diagram; feedbacks
• Adapt your model iteratively

STELLA – Goals for Today
TELI-G | Tufts University | 1-17-2015
• Today, we’re making a mass flow (m3) diagram for
ceramic filters (an example)
• General thoughts: System boundaries? Functional
unit? Flows and stocks? End output? Life cycle/time
boundaries?
• You can apply these to your own work as well!
TELI-G | Tufts University | Spring 2016
STELLA – Goals for Today
TELI-G | Tufts University | 1-17-2015
• We’ll go through a simple system and see the
outputs given
• While I do this – think about how you could apply
this to your work
• Feel free to ask questions, now and during the
practice period

• Also will email out all of the STELLA files I’ve
used – from chemical equilibrium of phosphorus in
lakes to population growth dynamics
• You can use these as examples
• Also .stm files are sometimes added to papers (see citations)
