Sweets project (tech)

Editor's Notes

  • #2 Have anyone of you actually pondered deeply about what goes into your mouth? Have you ever though deeply about the difference between the sweet things that end up as the same thing? Have you ever wondered why you feel so happy after you eat sweets? Well, here’s your answer. Today, I am going to talk about sweets. Sweets, also known as confectionary is a food that is rich in “sugar content”. One reason why sweets are called sweets is because it’s sweet. Different countries call it different things, as they are called sweeties or goodies in Britain, lollies in australia, and candy, in the northern part of America. There are different sweets as you know, such as...\n
  • #3 Chocolate: Which are normally brown substances made out of cacao beans but more cream contained than the beans, so... bummer\n
  • #4 Skittles, color coated gummy candies that leaves coloring on your fingers and everything, has different “artificial flavors”\n
  • #5 Lollipops, also referred to as “candy”, are sweet syrup solidified on a plastic stick and comes in various shapes, but is normally circular. \n
  • #6 Ice cream: frozen creamy substances that come on sticks as well, but are wooden. Can have different flavors. These are mostly made of milk and “cream”. \n
  • #7 Gummy bears: Are chewy substances made to look like bears, come in different colors, and people enjoy eating their heads off first. \n\nThere are more to be mentioned about the types of sweets, but to talk about sweets, we would need to return all the way back in our time line to find out about the history of sweets. \n
  • #8 You cannot be sure whether Lucy the australopithecus ate honey dew on a branch. Nor can you be so sure that monkeys didn’t eat sugar canes for their sweet “juice”. However, since I wasn’t there to witness it, nor was any other human there to record it and put it on youtube or anything, I decided to think that all that didn’t happen. So, I will return only a short period in our time line to the 19th century. So, to talk about the sweets at that time, I need to describe the economy shortly. Before the 19th century, there actually was sugar and sweets, however, it could only be afforded by people in great luxury. However, during the 19th century, there was a sudden drop of the cost of sugar, leading to great manufacturing of sweets in our current form. There were:\n

  • #11 There were further inventions such as candy floss, licorice, and etc. \n
  • #12 Different sweets are famous in different regions and at different times. Different companies may include Chupa-Chups, Haribo, Nestlé, Hershey’s, M&Ms, and etc. In G.Gs, a store by our own school, there was a big boom of Haribo, Maoam, and Fluffy Stuff just last year. \n
  • #13 Artificial sweeteners, used as substitutions of sugar. These include many times as much sugar than normal sugar. They input intense sweeteners to substitute sugar with maltodextrin to add a pleasurable feeling when taken in. There are only six approved sugar substitutes, however, some include substances that are “natural” however not approved yet. As the use of high-fructose corn syrup increases, the level of obesity inclines as well. Even though it might give a similar pleasurable feeling when taken in, there is still a controversy amongst doctors and companies that corn syrup is processed in a way different to when processing normal sugar. \n
  • #14 The body has a queer relationship with sweets: Like this guy in the picture, kissing the lollipop, most people like sweets a lot. One of the reasons this is is because of fatigue. When people are immensely tired, they crave for a fast energy source. Sugar, (Glucose, fructose, it depends) is very easily converted in the body if it has enough insulin. So, people might crave for a whole bunch of sugar when they are tired. However, where it becomes a vicious cycle starts here. If the body has more “energy” than needed, it is “potentially stored” inside the body. This can grow fatty acid in the body, and sometimes collect in the blood. With a high blood pressure than, it can lead to different diseases. Also, too much sweats can lead to sudden spurts of uncontrollable anger. Sugar is also known to make the feeling of anxiety dull. This is one reason why a small dose of chocolate is okay before a test. However, too much of this “chocolate” can lead to a bigger problem when it is taken it too much, and makes the brain “dull”. \n
  • #15 The design of a product may change how different product get sold. For example, if a product had a disgusting design, why would anyone want to buy it if there was a similar food in a better package that looks more professional. \n
  • #16 So, which one, if they both included the same drink in them and considering they were of the same price, but was these two bottles, would you choose? Here is the importance of design with sweets. Sweets with not much variables, unless it is exceptionally brilliant (taste, idea?) it needs to be successful in its design, like any other thing. \n
  • #17 The effects that sweets have to our lives varies. It might be positive or negative. For most people like to hear the bad news first, I’ll start off with bad news. Sweets are bad for you in various ways. It is the major reason to child obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, etc. It can get you to have low insulin rate because you consume more than can be made, then, you cannot process enough sugar, more goes to fat, you become weak, and boom, there we go again. \nNow on to good news. There’s not much good news to say, but sugar can get a lot of people to lift up their spirits. Also, sugar, as mentioned before can be a great source of energy when you are out of it. There are a lot of benefits sugar has had to the society as well. \n
  • #18 So now we look more deeply into the “vicious cycle” I mentioned before. There might be a “little too much fat” at the beginning, but become “way too much”. Sweets are addictive. And people who get addicted to it have trouble getting out. There might be too less insulin in the body than can be supported. These days, compared to the old times, even though we are progressing at a higher pace, there are too much people with dangerous levels of “potential energy”. This, is the main reason why sugar and sweets can risk man-kind’s life style. \n
