Sustainable Garden at Oakes Childrens Center

Rebuilding Together SF provides free home repair programs for low-income, elderly, and disabled residents to help them live safely and independently in their homes. They are partnering with Oakes Children's Center to revitalize the garden space for students, staff, and administration. The plan is to clean up the garden, repair furniture, plant native species and herbs, add stepping stones and a bird house, and make the space safe, educational, and low maintenance. With volunteer labor and donations, the project will create an enjoyable outdoor area to benefit the children and community.

Final design project
Kasey Marshall is working on a final design project for a zero waste, high energy capture homestead site to support plants, animals, and commercial purposes. The goals are to use recycled materials where possible and think outside the box. The site has challenges like flat land and wind exposure but strengths such as acreage, rainfall, and fertile soil. The design principles focus on catching and storing energy, producing no waste, and multiple functions. Crop and nutrient cycling plans were created. The site plan evolved over time to better connect and integrate elements in a sustainable way. Social connections are also important to the design. The course has helped examine needs, capabilities, and sustainability to create an efficient and practical overall draft design.

Final design project
Kasey Marshall is working on a final design project for a zero waste, high energy capture homestead site to support plants, animals, and commercial purposes. The goals are to use recycled materials where possible and think outside the box. The site has challenges like flat land and wind exposure but strengths such as acreage, rainfall, and fertile soil. The design principles focus on catching and storing energy, producing no waste, and multiple functions. Crop and nutrient cycling plans were created. The site plan evolved over time to better connect and integrate elements in a sustainable way. Social connections are also important to the design. The course has helped examine needs, capabilities, and sustainability to create an efficient and practical overall draft design.
Introduction
This document proposes converting an empty lot in Bandar Sri Damansara, Selangor, Malaysia into an edible garden. The group analyzed the 55m x 60m site, noting its basketball courts, vegetation, and location near residences and other amenities. To improve the area, the document suggests replacing broken structures with a garden that would provide healthy produce for residents and a gathering space, while improving air quality. Diagrams and sketches illustrate the garden layout, including paths, planting beds, and amenities like a guard house, pergola, and bicycle parking. The edible garden aims to benefit residents through convenience, social interaction, environmental enhancement, and healthy lifestyle promotion.

Program • Furniture – Clean and paint or stain w/ No VOC product – Repair existing benches that need work: cinder blocks – Determine placement of furniture • 4 – 5’x5’ tables • 6 – 12”x7’ benches • Soil – Remove all weeds, etc. – Plant Existing/Donates Jade plants into the soil – Use Native Plants to fill in empty space around the perimeter of site – Source Native plants to add: grasses, sunflowers, etc. for Permaculture Area – Use low maintenance vegetation – Provide mulch as a top layer of soil – Provide Appropriate Fertilizer for plants & soil

Program • Materials – Keep existing pavers • Secure around the ridge w/ a 2x4 frame • Remove the wooden block at the top of the stair (trip hazard) • Make sure pavers are very secure and cannot be easily picked up by the children – Add Stepping Stone Pavers in front of Cinder Block Herb Garden • Design – Cinder Block Garden Wall to be used by the Children for planting & using • Herbs, basil, mint, etc. (anything that can be taken home by the kids) – Keep in mind a location for the Children’s Bird House on Site • Other – Existing water pipeline on site – Design the area to be as low maintenance as possible
