The Supreme Court of India was hearing a petition for special leave to appeal regarding the conviction of Dr. Gokarakonda Naga Saibaba. In the previous hearing, the Court had directed the trial court to hold day-to-day proceedings to record statements of all material witnesses by a certain date. In this hearing, the state of Maharashtra informed the Court that all material witnesses have been examined and cross-examined. However, 8 formal witnesses remained. The Court observed that since all material witnesses were examined, continuing detention of the petitioner was unfair given his medical condition. Therefore, the Court directed the petitioner's release on bail on furnishing bail bonds to the satisfaction of the trial court.
