FLOW OF INFORMATION
 Efficient flow of information is critical for the success of any supply chain
management system. Information systems made for supply chain
management ensure that critical and useful information flows through the
system effortlessly without disrupting the chain and its functioning.
Information flows have very important functions to perform and their effects
can be felt substantially in the execution of physical flows of orders and
products, recording of inventory and shipping, codification of decision rules
and reporting of performance.
FOUR DIFFERENT ASPECTS OF SUPPLY CHAIN
INFORMATION SYSTEM
 There are four different aspects of supply chain information system including
customer relationship management,
 supplier relationship management,
 logistical operations and
 internal supply chain management.
Within these aspects, there are different levels of decision making that takes
place. These can be divided into strategic decision making, tactical planning,
routine decision making and execution and transaction processing. Many
authors also, classify these information functionalities into categories like
strategic planning, decision analysis, management control and transaction
systems.
DECISION AREAS INTHE SUPPLY INFORMATION
SYSTEM
But what are the decisions that are involved in these systems?
Before, you learn about specific decision areas in the supply chain
information system, let’s have a brief look at the different systems
used in these areas
Enterprise Resource Planning: This supply chain information
system is used collecting and reporting all information
relation to the business transactions including functionalities
related to finance, sales, operations and accounting. This
SCIS covers three aspects of customers, suppliers and internal
supply chain.
CUSTOMER RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
Customer Relationship Management System: This SCIS is
concerned with the customers and managing the companies’
linkages with them. Information systems in this area covers
activities like order management, selling processes, market
analysis as well as service center management
SUPPLIER RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
Supplier Relationship Management System: This refers to
the information system concerned with managing linkages of
the company with its suppliers. The functionalities of
relevance to this information system is related to the design
planning, decisions related to sourcing of materials,
negotiations with the suppliers, the buying process as well as
collaborating on the supply.
DECISION SUPPORT SYSTEM
Decision Support System: This information system is related
with company’s internal supply chain management. The
management area assists in functions like collecting,
analyzing, manipulating, reporting and presenting data that
will help in the decision-making area. Network design system:
The information systems involved in this area is concerned
with the aspect of logistics. It deals with questions of sizing,
transporting, facility location, etc
NETWORK DESIGN SYSTEM
Network design system: The information systems involved in
this area is concerned with the aspect of logistics. It deals
with questions of sizing, transporting, facility location, etc.
