Introduction
Summer is a wonderful time to go on vacation, to relax, to unwind, to learn something
new, to take on an adventure and to catch up with friends from way back. It is also the perfect
time to READ. Read books you bought months back during a trip abroad or one you picked up
from a leisurely stroll in a bookstore. Read up on ebooks bought and downloaded online. Read
books from the library, especially the ones included in this summer’s reading list!
The Beacon Academy Library releases a booklet of recommended reads highlighting
new acquisitions, old favorites recommended by teachers and avid student readers, and picks
from the shelves by Mrs. Gagatiga, Teacher Librarian. You will find in the list titles of books that
are for light and leisurely reading as well as titles for serious and indepth study of content area
subjects.
For this summer’s reading list, books that parents may find interesting and helpful are
also included. Parents who wish to borrow these books may simply ask his/her son or daughter
to borrow on his/her behalf. If you think the list does not pique your interest, check the BA
Library’s Web OPAC for specific titles. The web address is http://www.tbalibrary.org/.
Lastly, the booklet has a feedback form at the back. Give us  brief book reviews of the
books you’ve read over the summer and a reading reward awaits you when we see each other
in August! Happy summer reading!
Teacher Librarian’s Picks from the Shelf:
The Scholastic CHOICES Series discusses issues relevant to the modern teenager: from
tattoos to decision making, positive self concept and peer pressure, aggression and bullying,
sibling rivalry and tolerance. Stories of teenagers battling it out and rising above the situation
make for an inspiring reading experience.
And Ebooks in the Kindle too!
The Magicians by Lev Grossman is a far cry from our favorite wizards and witches of
Hogwarts. Grossman’s magicians are callous and overly confident to the point where their use of
magic cross the line of ethics and morality. Grossman presents magic as a deep desire that can
change or ruin a life. Do not expect for a warm and fuzzy ending.
Peaches for Father Francis by Joanne Harris tells the story of Vivienne who preserves
peaches in the summer. What is in the concoction that salvaged Father Francis and his Muslim
counterpart from a religious conflict? In the end, it is all about Vivienne’s personal redemption
and rediscovery. Will she choose to stay in Lansquinet, the small French town she loves dearly
or move to Paris where her lover waits?
