A recent study found that advanced manufacturing jobs in Indiana increasingly require at least an associate's degree as they are moving beyond the production floor. While blue-collar production jobs are declining, white collar and STEM-related jobs are growing. The study concluded that college graduates will drive future growth in Indiana's advanced manufacturing sector, which uses technology to improve products and processes. It recommends that high schools better prepare and expose students to technical careers that require post-secondary education.
White Paper: Addressing Worker Shortages in the Skilled TradesTulsa Welding School
The popularity of America’s skilled trade careers has been in steady decline for the past few generations, and industries that have relied on American workers across the country are now feeling the effects of that. While the shortage puts employers at a disadvantage, it also creates huge opportunities for newcomers to the industry. - See more at: http://www.weldingschool.com/blog/how-to/white-paper-addressing-worker-shortages-in-the-skilled-trades/
This article aims to demonstrate the need for restructuring the education system in all countries of the world as a consequence of the profound changes that are occurring in the world of work due to the technological advance, especially with the use of artificial intelligence in productive activities.
Universities have been identified as knowledge creation centres, where knowledge
can be created and transferred for social and economic benefits and advancement.
What makes them relevant now is that we are in the knowledge era where knowledge
has become the currency for facilitating sustainable development; hence, the role of
universities, as knowledge creation centres, has become more relevant. This relevance
is reflected in their potential to generate ideas and knowledge that can become products
and companies when harnessed. The gap, however, has been that a lot of the knowledge
created by universities has not gone beyond the idea or prototype stage. This study,
thus, proposes a framework to harness knowledge created in and by universities to take
them from the concept stage to the product stage and then to the startup stage, hence,
making them factories for startup companies

The Talent Gap Crisis - Is Manufacturing Sexy Enough for the Next Generations? CBIZ, Inc.
Manufacturing employment accounts for 12.8 million jobs in the U.S. Yet, currently about 452,000 manufacturing positions remain vacant across the nation – a staggering statistic. Manufacturers saw this coming more than two decades ago as the retirement of the baby boomer generation began to impact the industry. Compounding the loss of experienced workers, the introduction of new manufacturing technologies, the industry’s persistent image problem and the cultural shift in the demand for work-life balance have catapulted the talent shortage to the industry’s top challenge.
The U.S. manufacturing industry flourished in the first half of the 20th century, promoting leaner production and new technologies. In the early 2000s, however, the manufacturing industry began to experience what is now being called a “skills gap.” The decline of apprenticeship and training programs across the nation has widened the gap between experienced and novice manufacturing engineers.
In honor of National Manfuacturing Day, Oct. 2, 2015, #ImAnEngineer took a closer look at the skills gap, it's social, economic and even political implications, and the role everyone - from employers, to educational institutions, to government organizations - can play in helping to close the gap once and for all.

Help Wanted: “T-Shaped”
Skills to Meet 21st Century Needs
A handful of students within the busi-

headed for careers in service-related
industries with an expanded set of
marketable skills. A specially devised
curriculum shared by the two schools
includes instruction in such areas as

as well as soft skills electives including
leadership and communication.
The university’s goal is to help stu-

highly prized by organizations in service-

the university’s College of Business. For
example, he says, “students in the pro-

Kwan says students possessing
such versatile skills will enjoy a com-

San Jose State is not alone in offering
this interdisciplinary approach, called
the Service Science, Management, and

it is one of more than 250 universities
that provide SSME-related courses
thanks in large part to IBM.
It was Big Blue that developed the
SSME curriculum in 2003 and that for
the past five years has helped uni-

of the IBM Academic Initiative—a
program that helps accredited schools
throughout the world develop a more
competitive workforce. To date, the
expansive IBM initiative has helped
more than 8,500 faculties at 4,000
institutions teach 40,000 courses to
more than 2.5 million students, states
Director Kevin Faughnan.
Indeed, a growing chorus of busi-

to ensure that tomorrow’s graduates
possess a broad repertoire of compe-

“Graduates who want to compete in
the global economy need to be innova-

on value creation,” says Debra Van

“They also need leadership skills and
the flexibility to adapt quickly as
the pace of change accelerates.”

Factory Jobs Return, but Employers Find Skills Shortage
By MOTOKO RICH
BEDFORD, Ohio — Factory owners have been adding jobs slowly but steadily since the beginning of the year, giving a lift to the fragile economic recovery. And because they laid off so many workers — more than two million since the end of 2007 — manufacturers now have a vast pool of people to choose from.
Yet some of these employers complain that they cannot fill their openings.
Plenty of people are applying for the jobs. The problem, the companies say, is a mismatch between the kind of skilled workers needed and the ranks of the unemployed.
Economists expect that Friday’s government employment report will show that manufacturers continued adding jobs last month, although the overall picture is likely to be bleak. With the government dismissing Census workers, more jobs might have been cut than added in June.
And concerns are growing that the recovery could be teetering, with some fresh signs of softer demand this week. A central index of consumer confidence dropped sharply in June, while auto sales declined from the previous month.
Pending home sales plunged by 30 percent in May from April as tax credits for home buyers expired. Fretting that global growth is slowing, investors have driven stock indexes in the United States down to their levels of last October, for losses as great as 8 percent for 2010.
As unlikely as it would seem against this backdrop, manufacturers who want to expand find that hiring is not always easy. During the recession, domestic manufacturers appear to have accelerated the long-term move toward greater automation, laying off more of their lowest-skilled workers and replacing them with cheaper labor abroad.
Now they are looking to hire people who can operate sophisticated computerized machinery, follow complex blueprints and demonstrate higher math proficiency than was previously required of the typical assembly line worker.
Makers of innovative products like advanced medical devices and wind turbines are among those growing quickly and looking to hire, and they too need higher skills.
“That’s where you’re seeing the pain point,” said Baiju R. Shah, chief executive of BioEnterprise, a nonprofit group in Cleveland trying to turn the region into a center for medical innovation. “The people that are out of work just don’t match the types of jobs that are here, open and growing.”
The increasing emphasis on more advanced skills raises policy questions about how to help low-skilled job seekers who are being turned away at the factory door and increasingly becoming the long-term unemployed. This week, the Senate reconsidered but declined to extend unemployment benefits, after earlier extensions raised the maximum to 99 weeks.
The Obama administration has advocated further stimulus measures, which the Senate rejected, and has allocated more money for training. Still, officials say more robust job creation is the real solu ...

Study: College graduates will fuel
future of Indiana's advanced
manufacturing

By Ted Booker South Bend Tribune
A recent study found that people looking for jobs in
Indiana’s advanced manufacturing industry now
commonly need at least a two-year associate degree, as
jobs are increasingly moving off the production floor.
A high school diploma no longer carries the weight it
once did in the field, which is relying less on blue-collar
production workers and more on college graduates with
technical training.
The study, “Advanced Manufacturing in the United
States: The Shift Toward Diversified Industries and an
Educated Workforce,” was conducted by the Center for
Business and Economic Research at Ball State
University on behalf of Conexus Indiana, a private-sector
initiative that promotes advanced manufacturing and
logistics. It is available at http://goo.gl/9Bh8oB.
The study found that Indiana college graduates will drive
the future growth of the advanced manufacturing sector.
Advanced manufacturing is commonly defined as the use
of innovative technology to improve products and
processes. In contrast to other manufacturers, advanced
manufacturers are those that consistently improve
production techniques with new technology.
While the study found that traditional blue-collar jobs in the industry are on the decline in Indiana and nationwide, the
numbers of white collar and STEM-related occupations are rising. STEM stands for science, technology, engineering
and math.
College graduates are leading the industry’s recent growth and will continue to do so, according to Michael Hicks,
director of the Center for Business and Economic Research. While automated technology continues to replace blue-
collar jobs, opportunities are growing for occupations that require a college education — such as architects,
engineers, designers and managers.
“We’re getting people moving off the floor. ... They’re watching displays, doing laser tests and quality-control
analysis,” Hicks said.
In Elkhart County, which depends heavily on manufacturing, companies have invested more on automated
equipment in recent years, said Chris Stager, vice president of retention and expansion for the Economic
Development Corp. of Elkhart County. Skilled workers with training are needed to operate automated machinery, but
they’re often difficult to find.
“People are buying advanced machinery, and the maintenance is more complex and requires advanced levels of
training. There are shortages in those fields, such as heavy electrical equipment,” Stager said.
Advanced manufacturing jobs account for about 53 percent of all manufacturing employment statewide, the study
