Student led public relations agency at park school begins third year
1. Student-led Public Relations Agency at Park School Begins Third Year
ITHACA, NY, October. 3, 2018– Lab18, a student-led public relations agency in the Roy H. Park School
of Communications at Ithaca College has embarked on its third year as an experiential component of
study in the Department of Strategic Communications.
LAB18 is comprised of students majoring in Integrated Marketing Communications (IMC) and
Communication Management and Design (CMD) in the Department of Strategic Communications at the
Park School. Students participating in the curated lab, a senior capstone course in the department, build
professional portfolios, consult local and regional clients, develop strategic communication plans,
manage events, and gain valuable insight into the internal and external initiatives of a public relations
agency. As well, student roles and responsibilities reflect what they find in the industry and work tasks
include the tracking of billable hours, negotiating deadlines and building teams to meet goals.
"Our goal with senior capstone courses in the Integrated Marketing Communications (IMC) major is to
provide students with real-world immersions within which they will bring to bear all of their previous
education and experience. The outcomes are some substantial deliverables which benefit the client
organizations and enhance the students' learning portfolios,” says Scott Hamula, Chair of the Strategic
Communications Department.
Several key activities of the agency in 2018 include reporting out key outcomes from a multi-year digital
media study, participating in a nation-wide strategic communications planning competition and
dialoguing around key industry trends and publications. To wrap up the fall term the agency will
showcase their communication experiences, past and present, in a public forum on December 5, 2018
from 4:30-6:00 p.m. on the third floor of the Roy H. Park School of Communications. While an RSVP is
encouraged, this event is free and open to the public.
“Lab18 provides a rich experiential learning opportunity for communication students to practice making
real-time strategic communication decisions in an environment that embraces failure as much as it
applauds success,” says Ann-Marie Adams, instructor and curator of the lab experience.
