SLIDE 1: Title Slide/ Introduction
Mint: Hello My name is Stporn Nithikarnphisitha, or just simply Mint. I’m seventeen years old and I
have attended ISB for about 12 years. Today I will be talking about how different ways of knowing
have affected my learning experiences in the visual arts field and helped me grow as an art student or
an artist.
Interviewer: What is a specific example of your learning experiences in the visual arts that have
affected you as an artist?
SLIDE 2: Overview of my Learnig Experience
Mint: A specific example of my learning experiences in the visual arts would be: IB ART, I will be
talking about the class itself and how it has affected by knowledge in the arts
Mint: First, IB Art. IB Art is a class which I’m taking in the last two years of high school. In IB Art,
students seek out different types of research to influence and to inspire and create different types of
art in their unified body of works over the two years.
Personally, My focus is Comparative Mythology. Therefore, the various art works influence by
numerous cultures have tied into one general focus of comparative mythology.
Some of research in IB ART may be known as:
- Contextual Research – is when we look at a historical, cultural or social aspect of a
general topic or specific topic we may be interested in. Here we are able to get a full
understanding of different aspects of the topic we might want to expand in our art works.
- Visual Research – here, we are to search different images or works of other artists that
may inspire a technique, media of art, etc. in our work.
- Critical Research – for critical research, we are to analyze what ever visual research has
influenced us as an artist. We are critical about the image or art work made by others and
how their use of art will further inspire in our personalized art work.
Interviewer: Therefore, in reflecting and giving us an overall introduction about IB ART, how has
different ways of knowledge affect your learning in IB ART specifically?
SLIDE 3: WoK #1: Language
Mint: Now that I have introduced the different types of research in IB Art. We can link this to the
different Ways of Knowing to the researches.
In contextual research, we can see that language is an important way of knowing that affects my
growth as an artist. Language is a relevant to the theory of knowledge because it is one of the main
ways in which we acquire knowledge about the world. Especially, used as a medium of
communication.
As my art projects focuses on various mythologies from different cultures, language is an important
way of knowledge. Different myths are written in different languages and slangs that are derived
from different origins and culture. Through language and translation, it has allowed me to conduct
my contextual research in art and understand different mythologies.

However, we can take the problems of translation into consideration. One of the problems is the
problem of untranslatable words:
This suggests that “every language contains words that have no equivalent in other languages, and
can only be translated by a lengthy and inelegant paraphrase.” Therefore, this may create limitations
and barriers in my studies as I may misconvey a message or important symbol of a certain mythology
which was derived from a different culture.
SLIDE 4: WoK #2: Perception
Perception is also another very important Way of Knowing that affects my learning experience in
visual arts. This can be seen specifically through my visual research.
Perception is basically the awareness of things through our five senses – sight, sound, touch, taste,
smell. It works as a channel between our self and the outside word.
In my visual research, I seek different visual influences from real world captures, pictures from
magazines or books, internet sources, museums, etc. Different aspects of perception have a large role
in my knowledge.
Perceptual illusions such as “figure and ground” may highlight certain aspects of the world.
Therefore, the aspects or art forms that stand out to me more may become more relevant to me than
the others and therefore influence my art work.
Another concept of perception I want to talk about is the “Selectivity of Perception.” A vast amount
of data is constantly flooding into our sense, so we would be overload if we were consciously aware
of everything. Therefore, we only notice some things and over look others.
This applies to my studies and experience in art as different elements of art works I see or images I
look through in a book or even objects on the table I am sitting at may stand out to me than other
things. As a consequence, the selectivity of my perception allows me to be consciously aware of what
I select, which then possibly inspires my art work.
SLIDE 5: WoK #3: Emotion
As I mentioned earlier in my presentation that critical research is about being critical and analyzing
different art works or visual research I have conducted. For example, Why do you like this image?
What mood does this image or art work create in you? What are the effects of the art techniques in
this work that inspires you?
Therefore, many times my answer would be: “I like this art work because it provokes happiness,
anger, etc.” Here, we can see that our emotions are being treated as one of the ways of knowing.
As Lagemaat stated “it is difficult to imagine a meaningful human life without any emotions” this
works the same way with my art studies. Without feeling any emotions towards a form of art, or a
topic, nothing will influence or inspire me, as an artist, to create a meaningful piece of art work.

Interviewer: What do you know about yourself that will change how you approach learning in the
future?
SLIDE 6: Analysis of my approach to learning in the future
Through the studies in Theory of Knowledge, the interrelationships between different ways of
knowing (language, perception, reason, or emotions) and areas of knowing (arts, history, etc) have
allowed me to understand the benefits and limitations of “knowing.”
In the future, I will definitely be aware of the limitations in all my decisions, my perceptions, my
opinions, and my interpretations on different things.
