5. Abraham, formerly called Abram
belonged to a prosperous family
of nomadic shepherds and
farmers from the city of Ur. He
was a descendant of Shem, a son
of Noah.
Terah, the leader of their clan and
the father of Abram took his
grandson, Lot and Abram and his
wife Sarai out of Ur to Canaan.
However, they never arrived in
Canaan. Instead, they settled in
the prosperous land of Haran and
lived there until Terah died. And
that is when God called Abraham

your kinsfolk and from
your father’s house to a
land that I will show you. I
will make of you a great
nation, and I will bless you.
I will make your name
great so that you will be a
blessing. I will bless those
who bless you and curse
those who curse you. All

7. And so, Abraham accepted
God’s call. God asked
Abraham to let go of all his
past and to accept a future
of “new beginnings”
where he would embark
on a new mission and lead
a new life. This means that
Abraham has to leave his
country, his father’s house
and his relatives. But don’t
worry, God promised
Abraham of a great nation,
a great family and a great
name…
8. So, what exactly is the
task that God has given
Abraham?
Abraham has to act as
God directed him. He
should trust God and
His promises. He must
obey the promptings of
the divine will and
believe in God
wholeheartedly.
9. Years passed by and
Abraham started to worry
about God’s promise to
give him many
descendants. He started to
doubt and question God.
Why? Because Abraham
and Sarai were already too
old to have a child.
Nevertheless, God
continued to assure him of
His promise and to
suppress his doubts and
10. And after years and years and
years of waiting…God finally
fulfilled His promise to
Abraham. Sarai who is now
called Sarah finally bore a child.
They named him Isaac which
means “he laugh” because when
Sarah’s pregnancy was
announced to them, Sarah can’t
help but laugh because she
cannot believe that in her old
age, she can still bear a child.
Imagine the miracles that God
does? He works wonders!
11. Years later God tested Abraham. He
asked him to sacrifice his only son. It
was a great challenge and test of faith
for Abraham to follow this command.
He waited for many years and prayed
very hard for Isaac’s arrival. But
without any hesitations, Abraham did
as what God instructed him. He and
Isaac went to the land of Moriah.
They both gathered woods and
traveled to where the sacrifice would
take place. Isaac was completely
unaware of what is going on. He
asked his father, “Where is the sheep
that we will use as our sacrifice?”
Abraham answered “God will
provide the sheep for the burnt
offering.”
12. He bound his son Isaac and laid him
on the altar, on top of the wood. Then
he reached out his hand and took the
knife to slay his son. But the angel of
the Lord called out to him from
heaven, saying “Abraham! Abraham!”
“Here I am,” he replied.
“Do not lay a hand on the boy,” he
said. “Do not do anything to him.
Now I know that you fear God,
because you have not withheld from
me your son, your only son.”
Abraham looked up and there in a
thicket he saw a ram caught by its
horns. He went over and took the ram
and sacrificed it as a burnt offering
instead of his son.
13. The angel of the Lord called to
Abraham from heaven a second
time and said, “I swear by
myself, declares the Lord, that
because you have done this and
have not withheld your son,
your only son, I will surely bless
you and make your descendants
as numerous as the stars in the
sky and as the sand on the
seashore. Your descendants will
take possession of the cities of
their enemies, and through your
offspring all nations on earth
will be blessed, because you
