The ancient mariner is a poem written by Samuel Taylor Coleridge. In this poem, he talks about an old sailor who happened to stop one of the three wedding guests to listen to his woeful tale. The wedding guest was bewitched by the mariner's glittering eye and he sat down to hear his narrative of his disastrous journey he undertook.
The Final Cartwheel is the story of a young doctor’s return home, after a five-year hitchhiking odyssey around the world. Through East Asia, Indonesia, and around the Antipodes, the circle becomes unbroken.
The American West was a notion, not a nation. It was a process, not a place. The native animal and human life of the West was displaced, replaced, and exterminated- sixty million bison to make way for European bog animals, billions of passenger pigeons for nothing, and ninety percent of aboriginal native Americans, out of an original population of possibly a hundred million, by accident and design. Late in the summer of 2013, I set out to find the Old West, what it had been, and what had replaced it. The quest for my own wild panorama would turn wheels of fortune into a movable feast of Wagon Days. And if this don’t get your fire started, your wood’s wet.
In the summer of 1980, a maverick young doctor gave it all up, to hitchhike around the world.
The first arc he carved with his thumb stopped a little red pickup that took him over the horizon. Like his mythical hunter companion, Orion, he was on a vision quest, propelled toward the dawn to have his sight restored.
This is the story of that five-year odyssey to discover his Destiny.
In the summer of 1980, a maverick young doctor gave it all up, to hitchhike around the world.
The first part of his odyssey took him through South America and up through Africa, accompanied by his mythical hunter companion, Orion.
Between the Cartwheels is the sequel to that cartwheel, his vision quest continuing now, on the European Grand Tour adventure of a lifetime.

World's Longest Palindrome with True Quality (Full Translation)Harri Carlson
The longest palindrome in the world is finally translated into English! This book is revolutionary in the field of Word-Art! Finally also constrained writing can be used to create real literature, poetry and art. Translation gives to the whole world a touch of Northern magic. Wonderful and mythical Finnish must be the most amazing language in the world!

This is the article that was written by the good people over at Canoe & Kayak Magazine for their new SUP Magazine.
I was asked to help them organize a SUP trip on the Central Coast. What better place to do that than the Big Sur Coast.
Accompanied by the crew from Canoe & Kayak Mag and my friend Fletcher Burton this trip had everything. From trying to figure out where to actually put in with all the gear required for a multi trip SUP paddling adventure, to actually standing on a dead blue whale (NOT advisable!), to finding perfect 2-4 foot waves amidst the incredible scenery of rocky caves and alcoves.
Enjoy!

SYNOPSIS: MORE THAN 50 SHADES.
Author: JAMES KRISHNA.
The story unfolds in Fiji in 1944 on the arrival of the American military—who were there to protect the islands from the Japanese if there was an invasion.
James describes that day vividly, his friendship with the Americans that follow and the day he was taken away by Catholic Missionaries, baptized and educated towards priesthood.
Brought up by nuns, the boy robs the church of communion wafers and wine as well as a few shillings of the collection plate—to satisfy his constant hunger.
Later, another kind of hunger arises as the teenager falls in love with a young and beautiful white Australian orphan.
The passion that follow between the two teenagers gives him a tantalizing taste of lust for sex. He continues his quest for sexual discovery with a number of convent school girls—fast switching from student to teacher.
At an early age of seventeen James is lured by money to get him out of poverty and on his way to England to fulfill his life long ambition. He enters the boxing ring as a prize-fighter and some how manages to leave Fiji.
On his way he travels to Tonga, Samoa, Tahiti, and New Zealand, demonstrating his inexhaustible energy in an out of bed with world wind affairs and orgies with beautiful native women—where his imagination and lust run wild. Here he indulges into the wildest fantasies, which is explained in tasteful—yet explicit detail.
From New Zealand he embarks on a veritable ‘love boat’ type of a cruise on a passage to England. On board this luxurious ship he meets some high-spirited teenage Dutch girls—with liberal ideas of teenage sex.
Whatever takes place between the liberal minded girls from Rotterdam on the high seas, has to be left to the reader’s own imagination.
After a five weeks journey on a floating paradise James finally arrives in England at the height of ‘make love and not war’ sixties flower power era. What could be more fitting; he finds employment in Liverpool and frequents the ‘Cavern Club’ where he meets John, Paul. George and Pete Best, the first drummer of the up and coming rock band the Beatles.
Here young James is in his elements. His Hindu guru like features is embraced by the flower children and the free love if the sixties has begun.
The town of El Valle de Antón, in central Panama, sits in the mid.docxchristalgrieg
“The town of El Valle de Antón, in central Panama, sits in the middle of a volcanic crater formed about a million years ago. The crater is almost four miles wide, but when the weather is clear you can see the jagged hills that surround the town like the walls of a ruined tower. El Valle has one main street, a police station, and an open-air market. In addition to the usual assortment of Panama hats and vividly colored embroidery, the market offers what must be the world’s largest selection of golden-frog figurines. There are golden frogs resting on leaves and golden frogs sitting up on their haunches and—rather more difficult to understand—golden frogs clasping cell phones. There are golden frogs wearing frilly skirts and golden frogs striking dance poses and golden frogs smoking cigarettes through a holder, after the fashion of FDR. The golden frog, which is taxicab yellow with dark brown splotches, is endemic to the area around El Valle. It is considered a lucky symbol in Panama; its image is (or at least used to be) printed on lottery tickets.”
“As recently as a decade ago, golden frogs were easy to spot in the hills around El Valle. The frogs are toxic—it’s been calculated that the poison contained in the skin of just one animal could kill a thousand average-sized mice—hence the vivid color, which makes them stand out against the forest floor. One creek not far from El Valle was nicknamed Thousand Frog Stream. A person walking along it would see so many golden frogs sunning themselves on the banks that, as one herpetologist who made the trip many times put it to me, “it was insane—absolutely insane.”
Then the frogs around El Valle started to disappear. The problem—it was not yet perceived as a crisis—was first noticed to the west, near Panama’s border with Costa Rica. An American graduate student happened to be studying frogs in the rainforest there. She went back to “the States for a while to write her dissertation, and when she returned, she couldn’t find any frogs or, for that matter, amphibians of any kind. She had no idea what was going on, but since she needed frogs for her research, she set up a new study site, farther east. At first the frogs at the new site seemed healthy; then the same thing happened: the amphibians vanished. The blight spread through the rainforest until, in 2002, the frogs in the hills and streams around the town of Santa Fe, about fifty miles west of El Valle, were effectively wiped out. In 2004, little corpses began showing up even closer to El Valle, around the town of El Copé. By this point, a group of biologists, some from Panama, others from the United States, had concluded that the golden frog was in grave danger. They decided to try to preserve a remnant population by removing a few dozen of each sex from the forest and raising them indoors. But whatever was killing the frogs was moving even faster than the biologists had feared. Before they could act on their plan, the wave hit.”

History of the Mermaids
With the vast majority of our blue planet covered by water, it's little miracle that, hundreds of years prior, the seas were accepted to shroud secretive animals including ocean snakes and mermaids.
The "Merfolk" (mermaids and mermen) are, obviously, the marine adaptation of half-human, half-creature legends that have caught human creative mind for a long time. One source, the "Bedouin Nights," portrayed mermaids as having "moon appearances and hair like a lady's nevertheless their hands and feet were in their guts and they had tails like fishes."

Couldn’t stay away, could you? The characters and drama that seduced you in the first two books left a craving—and more Sababa is the cure.
Inside these pages live the final seven original stories of survival, suspense, and satire from the Sage of the Salish Sea— the most special season of a seasoned specialist. He will amuse you with his wit and wisdom, and the spontaneous combustion and thrust they generate, often mixed in unequal proportions, as he dances with the devil in the pale moonlight.
BC Bud is back on the radio, and the professor is back on point. Before there was artificial intelligence, the Good Doctor was the real thing, working in the mysterious old ways of a masterless samurai. But there comes an ill wind.
Trouble, oh we got trouble... right here in Harbour City... with a capital ‘T’... and that rhymes with C and that stands for ‘Cool.’ Welcome to the winter of his Casebook and the unmaking of the man. Welcome back to Sababaland.
We all remember our favorite places. You must really love this place if you want to return so badly. Or perhaps you just want to spend some more special time with Doctor Sababa, our Internal Medical consultant at Harbour City Regional Hospital. He would have amused you with his wit and wisdom, and the spontaneous combustion and thrust they generate, often mixed in unequal proportions, as he dances with the devil in the pale moonlight. Inside these pages live six more original stories of survival, suspense, and satire from the Sage of the Salish Sea. Sharpen your pencils. Put on your thinking caps. Like the Good Doctor, you will have six minutes to see each patient. Don’t be alarmed. Think of it as an intellectual challenge. With lives in the balance.Welcome to the autumn of his Casebook. Welcome to Sababaland.
You will love Harbour City. Most visitors to the island drive right through, without taking time to explore its attractions. But you’re not most visitors. You will get to spend some time.
Go head. Turn on your radio. That’s BC Bud, 101.3 FM on your Home and Native Band. He will announce your special arrival.
And if you catch something more than a salmon, you could be referred to Doctor Sababa, an Internal Medicine consultant at Harbour City Regional, the Sage of the Salish Sea. He would amuse you with his wit and wisdom, and the spontaneous combustion and thrust they generate, often mixed in unequal proportions, as he dances with the devil in the pale moonlight. Before there was artificial intelligence, he was the real thing, working in the mysterious old ways of a masterless samurai. In the myriad motions of all celestial objects, he was a meteor.
With proper care, you might even survive your encounter. Welcome to the spring and summer of his Casebook. Welcome to Sababaland.

1. Stories of the Southern Sea
It lives in the hole where
the moon used to be. And
for most of the worst part
of the northern winter, over
the last two decades, so
have we.
The real South Pacific was
not a Bali Hai musical, but a
drama of cannibals and
castaways, headhunters and
slavers, paradise and
perdition.
This is a book of saline
psalms. This is water.
2. Amnesia
“Balboa found the Pacific
and on the trail one day
he met some friendly
Indians whom he was told
were gay
So...
he had them torn apart
by dogs on religious
grounds they say
the great nations of
Europe were quite holy in
their way...”
3. Castaways
“Ese era su cueva, allí.”
Said one of the
lobstermen. That was
his cave, there.
4. Tide Table
“It seems like most
Chilote myths were
oceanic.” I said. Miguel
smiled.
“From the bottom of the
sea to the floor of the
forest, every act of life
was governed by the
brujos’ witchcraft, and
their magical
creatures.”
5. Headhunting in Kansas
When the men were
finally allowed back into
the village, they were
met by jealous and
possessed women, who
tried to steal or bite the
heads.
6. Fiji Bitter
“I think this one used to
be a clown.” He said.
“A clown?” I asked.
“Yeah.” He said. “Tastes
funny.”
7. The Most Beautiful Beach in the World
On my plate, it looked
like someone had
dismembered a large
bat, and tried to
reassemble it with yams
and taro and island
cabbage. It was never
going to fly again.
8. Prow of the Canoe
I formed a mental image
of a nguzunguzu,
mounted near the
waterline on the prow,
so that it dipping in and
out of the water, picking
up spiritual momentum,
and guarding against
hostile spirits, with each
stroke of twenty
paddles.
9. Alice in Wonderland
To get to where Alice was,
you needed to get beyond
Monique, and to get
beyond Monique, you
needed to get to Sylvanna.
To get to Sylvanna, you
needed to get through
Rose. To get to Rose, you
needed to get through
Immigration, and to get
through Immigration, you
needed to get your pack off
the slowest carousel in the
world.
10. Storyboarded
There is nothing to tell
you when the ocean will
begin, except the soft
recoil of deceleration,
far too slow to turn
back now. The water
tastes like blood, and it
should, for we come
from it, and your
bubbles escape while
they still can.
11. Big Money
The people of Yap have a
long history of making
big money the hard
way. But the real big
money, is coming down
the tree, head first.
12. Pepper, Palisades and Pearls
“ We looked around and saw the
dogs. All their throats had
been simultaneously cut and
their bodies, still breathing,
pierced with rods, were
turning on those pits. The
chief insisted we join in the
meal but Marina had turned
green and I asked if we could
just have ours to go. They
carefully wrapped the dogs in
leaves and we carried
their bodies away.”
13. Happy Lucky Welcome Fun
It’s not as if the
Americans were
deliberately trying to kill
them. It was simply that
they were measuring
how they would die, in
the lethal environment
they had decided to
create for them.
14. Mysterious Paradise of Mud
I asked the lady next to
me.
“Why do they call it the
mysterious paradise
island?”
“I don’t know.” She said.
“So that’s why.” I thought.
15. Aground in the Abode of Love
You know you’ve arrived
in Polynesian waters
when the vowels begin
to drown the
consonants.
16. Fara Way
“Fara.” Said Julie. “So
much fun.” And she was
gone. And then, for an
hour or so, so were we.
My eyes were just
beginning to wobble,
and then I heard it, just
once.
Strummummummummumm.
17. A Proud and Caring People
He rolled out of the Holden
like he had been freed from
its frame, looking up the hill
at his namesake on the AA
sign, and smiling, like
Samoans smile. He whipped
off his hi-flow cat tinted
sunglasses and, after a long
Pacific pause, put out a
brick-like hand for me to
shake.
“Equator.” He said. And why
not.
18. One Foot
All our clothes came off,
and would only come
back on for the two
hours every morning
when we attended the
wedding in our front
yard. We abandoned
time, but it would keep
track of us, counting
down paradise.
19. Luxury Link
“Pull up a chair.” Said the
old guy with the silver
crew cut. “Swing in.
Swing in.” He was
sporting two small
airline bottles of José
Cuero tequila, and a
grey sweatshirt.
Hammered and Happy.
21. Ghosts of the Rock
The geckos on the roof of
the restaurant that
evening flew into a
feeding frenzy, on the
gigantic triangular moths
that had taken refuge
around the lights, in the
overhanging eaves above.
Moth juice fell into our
wine glasses, and onto
our lamb dinners.
22. The Blood in Wineglass Bay
Tasmania, haunted by
extinction, was the first
place in the Southern
Sea where the
headhunters and the
cannibals had been the
white guys.
23. A Speck under the Forefinger of God
The real decadence
returned in my dreams,
with visions of
bloodstains between
the grains, seeping
through the creamed
rice.
24. White Villa Blues
“You’ve never even seen
this place you bought” He
said. “You want to live in
Northland?” I responded
with another question.
“Why not?” I asked.
“There’s history, and I
think we’ve found the
perfect quiet place.”
“It won’t be quiet, mate.”
He said. “And you’ll have
more history than you
can handle.”
25. The Author
Lawrence Winkler is an ancient
physician and phenomenologist,
traveler, mushroom forager, and
natural philosopher. As a young
man, he hitchhiked around the
world, for five transformative
years.
His middle age is morphing from
medicine to manuscript. He has a
passion for habitat protection,
including the (hopefully) final
repairs on a leaky roof. Westwood
Lake Chronicles was his first book.
He lives on Vancouver Island with
Robyn, tending their garden and
vineyard, and dreams.
