Stop Motion Video Project
Stop motion animation (also called stop frame animation) is animation that is
captured one frame at time, with physical objects that are moved between frames.
When you play back the sequence of images rapidly, it creates the illusion of movement.
(https://www.dragonframe.com/introduction-stop-motion-animation/) This style of
animation has been used since 1898 to create short animations. Nowadays it is used by
a variety of production companies to make children’s movies. Some stop motion
animations use puppets such as “The Nightmare Before Christmas’ and “Coraline”,
while others use claymation such as “Chicken Run” and “Missing Link.” Older Disney
movies, such as “Snow White and the Seven Dwarves” used a type of stop motion
animation where they hand drew and painted every scene in the movie.
While stop motion is mostly used to create entertaining movies, it is also a
beneficial way to explain difficult topics in a fun and engaging way as well.
Your Biology teacher also believes that stop motion could be fun to teach
students in the coming years about difficult concepts. You researched stop motion
animation and learned that there are many topics that can be explained via stop motion
animation, such as mitosis, DNA replication, and protein synthesis. To add to the
resources available you decided to make your own video over Meiosis and Genetics.
That means that along with specific academic vocabulary the stop motion animation
needs to use common vocabulary to help the students understand the material.
DQ: How can I explain the importance of meiosis and how Punnett
squares work to high school students using stop motion
animation?
Project Explanation:
As a pair, create a stop motion animation video to explain Meiosis and Genetics
to a student that is struggling to understand the concepts. To create the video you may
use Playdoh, hand-drawn pictures, Expo markers, and whiteboards, colored paper, or
Google Draw. If you have other objects that you want to use for the animation please
make a list of supplies for me to approve.
You will use Google Slides to create stop motion animation. Each slide will be a
picture and when all of the slides are combined it should create a video explaining the
topic.
Project Requirements:
1. Draw and Explain crossing over and how it creates genetic variation
2. Explain the steps of meiosis and how it is a reduction division process to create
gametes
3. Draw and explain a single trait cross Punnett square
4. Explain incomplete and codominance, give an example of each
5. Draw and explain a blood type Punnett square
6. 2-6 minutes in length
Requirements Breakdown:
1. Visual of chromosomes crossing over can visibly see before, during, and after a
chromosome crosses over, two colors to see genes being switched, and a short
explanation of how this increases genetic variation
2. Overview of the 8 steps of meiosis, explain how chromosome number is reduced
and divided, and explain why this is important for gametes (sexual reproduction)
3. Create a Punnett square for a single trait cross, explain which trait is
dominant/recessive, and predict offspring phenotypes and genotypes
4. Explain codominance traits and give a visual example of the trait, and explain
incomplete dominance traits and give a visual example of the trait
5. Explain blood type (codominance and multiple alleles), create a blood type
punnett square, and predict genotype and phenotype of offspring
