Savings Scheme? Here's to getting your doubts cleared

Under the Rajiv Gandhi Equity Savings Scheme (RGESS), an entire gamut of listed public
sector companies have been thrown open for investing. Unfortunately, investors are not sure
which companies these are. Here we aim to provide clarity on that front.
With the aim of nudging public sector enterprises (PSEs) towards profitability, the government
grants certain financial and operational autonomy in degrees. Depending on various
parameters, such as the average annual turnover over the past three years along with net profit
and net worth, the PSEs are eligible for enhanced delegated powers in certain areas. A common
example, for instance, would be capital expenditure up to a limit not requiring government
approval.
These PSEs are further categorised into sub-categories: Maharatna, Navratna and Miniratna.
