Jesus tells a parable about forgiveness to illustrate how his followers should forgive others. In the parable, a king forgives a servant an enormous debt out of mercy. But then that servant refuses to show mercy to another who owes him a small debt. The king punishes the unmerciful servant severely for his lack of forgiveness. Jesus concludes that God will likewise punish those who refuse to forgive others unconditionally.
