4. A/P Tan Tin Wee
Associate Professor, Department of Biochemistry, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, NUS
As teaching staff of the Biochemistry Department since 1990, A/Prof Tan
has been wearing multiple hats for the past quarter century, from Head
of Technet Unit, Singapore's first Internet Service Provider, which got
commercialised to PacNet in 1995, to the founding Head of the Internet
Research and Development Unit in 1995 (where he invented IDN
multilingual domain names, revolutionizing the domain name industry),
and founding Director of Bioinformatics Centre in 1996, which became
A*STAR Bioinformatics Institute in 2001, to the recent founding
Directorship of the National Supercomputing Centre in 2015.
He has served acting HoD of Biochemistry and RF Sheares Hall and more recently retired from being ten
years as Master of Eusoff Hall. His interest in STEM started when he was a young boy, retracing the work
of Galileo Galilei by plotting the four moons of Jupiter visible by small telescopes. Soon it grew to
science quizzes which his team won the prestigious Science and Industry Quiz 1977 televised on TV,
and the top prize in Chemistry at the 1978 Science Fair organized by Science Centre. Obtaining a place
at Trinity College in 1980, even before he was offered a government scholarship, he read the Natural
Sciences Tripos at Cambridge University, obtained a MSc in Molecular Biology and Biotechnology at
University College London, before getting his PhD from University of Edinburgh in 1990.
He is now championing supercomputing and superfast InfiniBand long range networking, and this
project which he is overseeing as Chairman of A*STAR Computational Resource Centre, codenamed
InfiniCortex, has won four awards this year. He was previously on the boards of SGX-listed Keppel
Telecommunications and Transportation (serving Chairman of the Nominations Committee, member
of the Remunerations Committee, Investment Committee, Audit Committee and Safety Committee,
with IPOs of M1 and Keppel DC REIT in the 14 year tour of duty), International Society for Computational
Biology, Asia Pacific Bioinformatics Network (which he founded in 1998), and several other companies
and organizations.

Managing Director, Agencies, APAC, Google
Michelle joined Google in Singapore in 2011 and is currently the Managing
Director, Agencies, APAC and is responsible for driving the company’s
strategy and relationships with marketing and advertising agencies
across Asia.
Prior to joining Google, Michelle was the Managing Director and
Senior Advisor of Providence Equity Partners, the world’s leading
private equity firm focused on media, entertainment, communications
and technology, from 2007 to 2009.
She began her career in Asia at STAR, a media and entertainment company based in Hong Kong, wholly
owned by News Corporation, where she held a number of key executive positions since 2000,
culminating as CEO from 2003 to 2007. Before this, she was Director of Legal and Business Development
at FOXTEL in Australia. Her career within media started at BSkyB in the UK. Earlier in her career Michelle
was a lawyer at Allen, Allen & Hemsley in Australia and Singapore.
Michelle has an extensive international board experience and currently serves as a nonexecutive director
of MTG (Modern Times Group), a leading international entertainment broadcasting group that span
four continents and include freeTV, payTV, radio and content production. She also sits on the board of
directors for Auckland International Airport Limited in New Zealand, Pacific Star Network in Melbourne
and Plan International (global aid agency working on behalf of children in developing countries) in
Hong Kong.
Michelle was named a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum and the Veuve Clicquot
Hong Kong Businesswoman of the Year in 2005. She is a graduate of Sydney University in Australia.

Brian Selby is MD, Global Alliance Management focused on accelerating
growth of GE Venture’s strategic initiatives by leveraging GE’s intellectual
property with our customers, GE businesses and GE Global Research
centers outside of North America. Brian is based in Singapore.
Prior to GE, Brian spent eleven years as part of the senior leadership
team of Elemica Inc. a global cloud based supply chain management
solutions company providing modular and scalable SCM cloud
applications to capital intensive manufacturing industries. Before
joining Elemica, Brian spent nine years with GE in various roles of increasing responsibility within
GE Corporate and GE Plastics, including Business Development, Sourcing and Commercial Sales.
Brian started his career as lawyer in the USA focused on international trade, mergers and acquisitions

Brian holds a JD from Chicago Kent College of Law. He is a graduate of the University of Chicago

Hong Yee Low received her PhD from Case Western Reserve University
in 1998, in the area of polymer science and engineering. She spent
about 2 years in Motorola Semiconductor Sector in Malaysia. To
pursue her interest in materials research, she joined the Institute of
Materials Research and Engineering (IMRE) in 2000. During her career
in IMRE, she has held a few key appointments including the
department head for the Patterning and Fabrication Capability group
for 5 years, principle investigator /program director for nanomprinting
research from 2003-2011, and the director of research for 2 years. In the
research field of biomimetic surface engineering, she has published more than 70 scientific papers, 11
granted patents and another 25 patent applications are pending. Her current research interests include
micro and nanopatterning techniques, adaptive polymeric surfaces and their applications.

Lerwen LIU has PhD in semiconductor physics with 15 of research and
business development practices in the field of nanotechnology. She is

recognized by various international organizations including the

Managing Director, Microspace Rapid Pte Ltd
Giulio Manzoni, born in Trieste (Italy) in 1967 is mechanical engineer
“cum laude”with a PhD in Microsystems and founder in 2002 of the
company Microspace developing micropropulsion systems for
nanosatellites.
Microspace projects included also micropumps, electronic controls
and pressurized gas containers to complete the system producing
fully controllable thrust in the range of 100 microN to 10 mN which
enables fine attitude control and formation flying of nanosatellites of
1kg to microsatellites of 100kg mass. Such systems have been fully qualified in the laboratory, have
been installed on clients nanosatellites and have been demonstrated in Space by the satellite
POPSAT-HIP1 launched in 2014 and fully developed and operated by Microspace in Singapore.
Dr Mark LIM
Director (Industry & Enterprise), IMRE, A*STAR
Dr Mark Lim is the Director (Industry & Enterprise) of the Institute of
Materials Research and Engineering (IMRE). He oversees the industrial
activities in IMRE impact.
Dr Mark Lim graduated from the Sheffield University of UK with a first
class honours in Mechanical Engineering, and a PhD in Control
Engineering. He has numerous publications and holds a patent. Prior
to joining IMRE, Dr. Mark Lim was with A*STAR HQ. He was instrumental
in shaping the current tranche research agenda in A*STAR for Engineering,
Aerospace, as well as Marine and Offshore.
At national level, Dr Mark Lim was an expert member of the ISO TC229 nanotechnology working group.
He also contributed in shaping the Workskill Qualifications for Precision Engineering. He was also a
member of the technical advisory committee for the Chemical Process Training Centre.
11. Dr Pamela PHUA
R&D Director, South East Asia and Pacific at AkzoNobel Paints
Pamela has spent 23 years in the area of Research, Development and
Innovation in the Coating Industry, driving and leading the New
Technology and Product implementation. Some of the products
launched by Pamela included the world-leading Dulux Weathershield,
Dulux Pentalite and in the more recent years, the Dulux Easyclean/
Easycare and Dulux Powerflexx and the mass market products, the
Dulux Catylac / Inspire.
Pamela is instrumental in setting up the first Decorative Global Laboratory
and team (Global Exterior Wall Paint in Asia Paint Expertise and Research Group) in 2008, bringing
Product Innovation into the emerging Asian markets with focus and speed. Pamela is also pioneer in
setting up the pan-regional RD&I organisation for the then South East Asia RD&I, that has evolved into
today’s South East South Asia Middle East RD&I organisation. This drives centralised RD&I Organisation,
Structure and governance, and through which we deliver simplification and harmonisation in Product,
Raw Material and Process Harmonisation. This enables business to bring product and service to the
market in a fast and coordinated manner, and agile Supply chain Sourcing and a robust Quality control
and assurance.
Pamela also shapes and leads industry Standardisation and Strategy setting. Pamela is the Technical
Chairperson for the Singapore Paint Industry Association and a committee member in Chemical
Standards Council of Singapore. Pamela spearheads and set up several important Singapore Standards
like SS345, SS150, SS500, SS494 and many more. In this role, Pamela also drives Sustainability and Green
Management into the relevant Industry standards, putting AkzoNobel at the leadership position in the
Industry. Pamela Pamela also acts as Industry Expert advisor for for Government agencies like Public
Housing Board, Singapore Institute of Architect, Singapore Green Building Council, National
Environmental Agency etc. Pamela is also a certified Auditor for the Singapore Government-linked
Accredicted laboratories.
Mr Ataru ONUMA
CEO, ACA Investments Pte Ltd
Ataru Onuma is Chief Executive Officer of ACA Investments Pte Ltd and
Managing Partner of International Strategy & Business Development at
Ant Capital Partners. Mr. Onuma is in charge of out of Japan investments
and business development service at Ant Capital Partners, founded in
October 2000, which manages 25 funds (including 5 private equity
funds and 4 secondary funds) with total fund size of more than 113
billion yen as of August 2005.
He started his career at Goldman Sachs in 1987 and worked for both Tokyo
and New York offices, serving a variety of roles including Vice President of Mortgages and Asset Back
Securities. Mr. Onuma was in charge of the first Japanese auto loan-backed securitization as a
syndication manager. He serves as a Director on the board of Intercure since April 14, 2005.

Negotiation at Columbia Business School in New York. She received
her Ph.D. degree in Organizational Psychology from University of
Michigan in 2005. Dr. Cheng’s research focuses on individuals’
negotiation and management of multiple social identities and its
impact. One line of her work examines the underlying psychological
mechanisms and behavioral outcomes of dual identity integration such
as Asian American’s bicultural identity integration and professional female’s negotiation between
gender and male dominant professional identities including business and engineering. A second
line of her research examines the influence of dual/multiple identity integration on organizational
outcomes including negotiation, creativity and leadership. Dr. Cheng has published her work at both
psychology and management journals. Her research about dual identity integration and creativity has
been reported on the New York Times.
Dr. Cheng has taught in three different countries both in academic institutes and executive education
programs. Dr. Cheng has also consulted with various companies and organizations for diverse projects
such as organizational change, employee’s needs, customer’s satisfaction, and the implementation of
new technology in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and the U.S.
A/P Antonio MONTEIRO
Associate Professor, Dept. of Biological Science, Yale-NUS College
Antónia Monteiro is an Associate Professor in the Department of
Biological Sciences at NUS and at Yale-NUS College. She studies the
evolution and development of butterfly wing patterns. She became
an independent researcher at the age of 31 at the State University of
New York, and then at Yale University. She has mentored over 50
women undergraduates, graduates, and postdocs, some of them
now leading their own labs.

14. Dr Paul O'KEEFE
Assistant Professor, Dept. of Social Sciences (Psychology), Yale-NUS College
Paul A. O’Keefe, Ph.D. is a social psychologist and Assistant Professor of
Psychology at Yale-NUS College. He is also Director of the Mindsets &
Motivation Lab, which focuses on research pertaining to goal pursuit
with particular attention to motivational factors, including interest,
implicit self-theories, and self-regulation.
Prof. O’Keefe earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the
University of California, Berkeley. Subsequently, he joined the Yale
University Center for the Psychology of Abilities, Competencies, and
Expertise as a research assistant where he worked with Robert J. Sternberg. In 2009, he completed his
doctoral training in social psychology at Duke University, after which he was awarded the Ruth L.
Kirschstein National Research Service Award (NRSA) Postdoctoral Fellowship, a position he held at
Stanford University where he worked with Carol S. Dweck.
Dr TEO Tang Wee

Dr Teo Tang Wee is a social equity scholar in science education research.
She is an Assistant Professor at the National Institute of Education,
Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. She graduated from
the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign with a doctorate in
Curriculum and Instruction. She teaches gender studies in an
undergraduate course, Critical Issues in Science, Engineering, and
Technology and the Masters of Education courses at NTU. Her research
interests include sociological, cultural, and feminist studies in science
education.
Ms Mrinalini VENKATACHALAM
Public Awareness and Youth Initiatives Manager, UN Women
Mrinalini Venkatachalam coordinates and executes all Public Awareness
and Youth Initiatives for Singapore Committee for UN Women. Her
experience of over 9 years in the non profitworld has ranged from
working in mental health, to advocating accessibility and equal rights
for people with disabilities, to generating awareness on Solid Waste
Management in local schools and slums in India. In her current capacity
at Singapore Committee for UN Women, Mrinalini promotes the general
mission on UN Women throughout the region by raising awareness for
Ending Violence Against Women, Economic Empowerment Programs, and
Governance and Leadership Programs amongst youth and the public in Singapore. Mrinalini also works
closely with businesses and corporates in their efforts to create positive social impact in Singapore and
in the region.
Mrinalini is currently driving Singapore Committee for UN Women’s Girls2Pioneers Campaign, which
aims to engage 3000 disadvantaged girls between the ages of 10-15 through a Science, Technology,
Engineering & Mathematics (S.T.E.M.) program.

16. Dr Jack CHENG
Faculty & Senior Assistant Director, IP Academy
Dr. Jack Cheng Yu-Chao joined the IP Academy, a fully-owned subsidiary
of the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (IPOS) as Faculty and
Senior Assistant Director specialising in technology intelligence and
intellectual property management.
Jack received his Ph.D. from the Division of Engineering and Technology
Management (D-ETM), National University of Singapore (NUS). He has
been appointed as the Adjunct Assistant Professor at NUS, teaching
modules of“IP Management”and“Technology Intelligence and IP Strategy”.
Prior to joining IP Academy, he was the co-principal investigator for several national projects on patent
trends and litigations in information and optical-electronic industries funded by the Taiwan Intellectual
Property Office (TIPO), during his term as the Secretary General at Taiwan Technology Law Institute. In
addition, he also conducted several consulting projects related to IP Management, Patent Analysis and
Patent Deployment for companies in semiconductor and financial leasing industries.
Mr HO Cheng Huat
Executive Vice President, IP Management Division, Exploit Technologies Pte Ltd, A*STAR
Ho Cheng Huat is currently the Executive Vice President of the Intellectual
Property Management (IPM) Division at Exploit Technologies Pte Ltd
(ETPL). At ETPL, a wholly-owned subsidiary of A*STAR, he works with a
team of IP managers to manage A*STAR’s patent portfolio created by
A*STAR’s researchers.
Cheng Huat started his career as a radio-frequency development
engineer in the Singapore subsidiary of Motorola Inc. In 1994, he
joined the Singapore-based Asia/Pacific IP Law Department of Motorola
Inc. and, after legal & IP training, became a patent attorney in that Department.
After leaving Motorola Inc. in December 1999, he worked as a patent agent in two Singapore patent
firms before joining ETPL in November 2002. Concurrent to his role at ETPL, he was seconded to the
Ministry of Law to serve as the Director of the IP Academy (Singapore) from August 2007 to August 2011.

17. Ms Lily LIM
Senior Assistant Director, Intellectual Property Office of Singapore
Ms Lily Lim is currently the Senior Assistant Director of the Capability
Development Department in the Intellectual Property Office of
Singapore (IPOS). She is part of the team that developed the
Intellectual Property Competency Framework (IPCF), a guide that
maps the skillsets and competencies needed for IP professionals
and practitioners. She also works in collaboration with local partners
such as the Singapore Business Advisors and Consultants Council
(SBACC) and the IP Academy (IPA) for the adoption and certification
of the IPCF.
Prior to joining IPOS, Lily has about 10 years’experience in training and education and holds a
Bachelor of Arts degree from the National University of Singapore (NUS) and a Post Graduate
Diploma in Education (PGDE) from the National Institute of Education (NIE) / Nanyang
Technological University (NTU).
Mr Desmond TAN
Partner, Davies Collison Cave LLP
Desmond is a registered patent attorney in Singapore with an academic
background in mechanical engineering. He is part of the pioneer batch
of locally trained patent attorneys in Singapore.
In the course of his career when he has been both in-house and
in-practice, he has drafted and prosecuted patent applications in
the areas of manufacturing and processes, communications systems,
acoustics devices, bio-mechanical medical devices, semiconductor
devices, electro-mechanical devices, payment systems and automotive
systems.
Desmond also has extensive experience in the filing of registered designs and the enforcement of
IP assets.
