The Livingstone College STARS Alliance group met with students at Salisbury High School to continue their Java coding project. At their monthly meeting, the group discussed fall activities and set new projects for spring 2013, including continuing the Java project, embarking on a new web development project using HTML, a research writing project, and an information alert program. They then assigned students to four teams to work on these spring projects.

Curriculum builds skills weekly through ELA, math and science projects. Students discovered concepts on their own and worked well in teams. The goals were to teach logical thinking, encourage tech careers, and make coding a literacy for the 21st century.

Through its research and outreach programs, YWiC found that to successfully teach computer science concepts, instruction must quickly engage students, efficiently teach the most important concepts, and adapt to students' understanding. YWiC compared traditional coding with LilyPad Arduino to block-based coding with App Inventor and found students learned more from LilyPad if only using one, but combining the tools taught the most concepts. Going forward, YWiC plans to streamline teaching LilyPad and App Inventor to increase the number of concepts taught in less time while maintaining student interest.
The Digital Researcher: Collaborative delivery and learning in practice [160]

This session will introduce the University of Hull’s Digital Researcher online course. The Digital Researcher was created to support postgraduate students and research-active staff navigating the territory of online publishing, social media, collection of research data, data storage, copyright and licensing - all within the context of academic study and research. While essential components of research, students and staff often find some of these to be ‘dull’ or ‘unengaging’, and so the course provided a novel way of addressing these issues through contextual learning with a focus on discussion. The first implementation of The Digital Student had an uptake of over 150 sign-ups with 51 completions, with another session due in November this year.
Delivered online over the course of a calendar week (7 days), the Digital Student represented the first significant collaboration between three areas of professional services within the university. This has led to important reflections on the nature of collaboration work within professional services, and the advantages of such approaches. The instructional design approach that was taken to developing the course applied the concepts of MOOCs. As this was delivered within the institutional VLE Canvas and was opened to all students and staff at the University of Hull, it may, however, be better described as a Small Online Closed Course (SOOC).
A range of technologies and tools both within and external to Canvas were used to deliver this course. This included:
1) the delivery of a digital badge through Credly to reward participation,
2) online discussions,
3) Tweet chats,
4) Collaborative Google Doc,
5) Video delivery via Panopto,
6) Content delivery via LibApps.
Participants will gain an overview of:
1) Using an institutional VLE (Canvas) to deliver a SOOC,
2) Building learning communities across staff and student audiences,
3) Collaboration in delivery between three professional services areas,
4) Learning points and changes for the next run.
Alabama Speaks Up!
Julie Evans from Project Tomorrow gave a presentation about the results of the Speak Up 2012 survey and planning for Speak Up 2013. The presentation discussed key findings from the 2012 Alabama data including that Alabama students are actively using social media and mobile devices for schoolwork and that parents, teachers, and administrators support allowing student-owned devices in the classroom. Evans encouraged districts to participate in Speak Up 2013 to inform planning with local data insights.
Blue valley app review
Blue Valley School District has partnered with Level 5 Solutions to create a mobile app to inform parents and students about district news and events. A team of 9 students from various majors will work on the app's development. They will research competitors, create a timeline and design, develop the app, and present it to the district for approval. The app aims to provide real-time updates on district information that is easily accessible to parents and students 24/7.
CILASS: Centre for Inquiry-based learning in the Arts and Social Sciences
The Information Literacy Network is an interdisciplinary group at the University of Sheffield created under CILASS to bring together stakeholders in information literacy. It is chaired by Professor Sheila Corrall and coordinated with the Library. Information literacy is key for CILASS and inquiry-based learning curricula. Through projects, it aims to develop information literacy teaching and share resources across disciplines at the University.

Hands-on activities in JAVA coding were done. ! ! ! ! Monday, November 26, 2012 Monthly meeting of the LC Group. We discussed the Fall project activities, including on campus mentoring, and setting new projects and goals for Spring 2013. We will continue with the JAVA project at the Salisbury HS and this will be expanded. The team will comprise five (5) CIS juniors and one CIS senior who will complete the JAVA curriculum and deliverables. In addition, we will be embarking on a Web development project using HTML as the coding language. This project will have 5 students responsible for the deliverables. Our third project for Spring 2013 will encompass research writing with a team of 3 students. emphasis will be on introducing students to research and research writing. A fourth project has been suggested as an “information alert’ program for on-campus students alerts. A team of 4 will be working on the project details and deliverables.
