Slope and Standard
Form
Standard form
 The standard form of an equation is:
     Ax  +By = C
    A and B are not zero.
    • How do you use this to graph a line? Simple
      you solve for y and put the equation in slope-
      intercept form.
Standard form
Standard form:   Slope-intercept form:
 Ax +By = C           y = mx + b
 3x + 2y = 8
                            3
-3x       -3x         y=      x+4
                            2
2y = -3x + 8
                             3
2       2             m=
                             2
                      b=4
      3
y=      x+4

Standard Form
Put the following equations in slope-intercept form, then graph.
1. 4x + 2y = 12

2. 5x + 4y = 20

3. -6x + 18y = 36

4. -21x + 3y = 15

5. -30x + 5y = -15

6. 28 = -7x + 7y

Situation #3 Do you Wanna Dance?
Student Council is selling tickets to the Valentine Dance. Tickets cost $5 per person or $8 per
couple. To make a profit $1200 worth of tickets must be sold.
                                                                         y
Let x = Number of $5 tickets sold                             240    y
Let y = Number of $8 tickets sold
                                                              200

1. Equation: ____________________________
                                                              160
2. Which of the following is a solution of the equation:
                                                               120
                                                     $8 Tickets
a. (160, 40) b. (80, 100) c. (80, 80) d. (0, 150)
                                                               80

                                                               40
3. How many $8 tickets must be sold if no $5 are sold?

                                                                             40   80    120     160   200   240
4. If x = 80 tickets, what is the value of y?
                                                                                       $5 Tickets
