FEMICIDE
RELEVANT TO ILO 1
4. WHy we
have
chosen to
cover The
Problem of
Femicide
● Lack of knowledge about femicide in some
first world countries (particularly the UK)
● High numbers of victims, hundreds of
women killed due to femicide in Turkey
alone last year
● Lack of action being taken against
femicide, with campaigners fearing that
the number of victims will rise further in
2020
● Lack of understanding of the reasons
behind #womensupportingwomen
● The topic of femicide is not covered or
given enough press within the UK Media &
News

5. Our
AIMS
● Spread awareness of what’s
happening outside of Turkey
● Make the reasons for the B&W
instagram selfies widely known
Lot of people seeing celebrities
B&W posts but may not be
understanding the meaning behind
them
● Approach the topic sensitively
● Avoid man hating!

2 questions answered
It’s important that everyone, regardless of gender, location etc.
hears about what’s happening in Turkey & supports the
movement. Subtitles make the information accessible to more
people, including the deaf community & those who don’t know
Turkish.
We aimed to keep each video under 3 minutes long, making it short
yet effective. Within an airport environment, passers by will have
little time to stop & take in a longer audiovisual piece. Each 1st
interview question will be different within each video, allowing for a
wider scope on the topic & new information within the differing
videos.

15. What Is
Femıcıde ?
The killing of a woman or girl, in
particular by a man and on
account of her gender.
Violence against women includes a
wide variety of acts – from different
types of emotional abuse and verbal
harrasment, to every day physical or
sexual abuse. The final point is
femicide: the murder of a woman
(WHO 2012).

16. Research
Femicide in turkey
At least 474 women were killed in Turkey
last year, according to the women's rights
group (We Will Stop Femicides Platform).
(BBC 2020).
Every year, the problem is getting worse: in
2019 women being murdered mostly by
partners and relatives, the highest rate in a
decade in which the numbers have
increased year on year.
Effect of Covıd-19
lockdowns?
Effect of coronavirus lockdowns has
increased the rate of femicide (The Guardian
2020).
This issue has become more global because
women in Turkey started protesting this on
social media to make their voices heard.
Turkish social media users joined a "women
supporting women" campaign by sharing black
& white pictures of themselves to call for
solidarity over femicide and violence against
women in the country, where hundreds are
killed every year (BBC 2020).

21. ● Due to the serious & violent topic of this
audiovisual piece, we want to ensure we
aren’t putting our interviewee’s at risk by
recording them talk to us about this issue.
● Our interviewee’s are Turkish women, so
furthermore this issue of Femicide is a very
real & scary threat to them.
● Their safety is of utmost importance to us,
& we want to assure them & ensure that
their safety is kept & any risk mitigated.
Ethical issues to
consider
RELEVANT TO ILO 1
22. ● Give interviewees the option to change
their names to protect them from any
negative backlash, including violence &
harm
(we would use real turkish names to still
make them sound like real Turkish women)
● Disclose that this is a theoretical project -
it won’t be released to public therefore
their safety is kept & risk mitigated
Actions put in place to
combat the ethical
issues we face
RELEVANT TO ILO 1
24. Planning &
Organisation
In the beginning
As a group, we started by brainstorming
ideas for what our factual piece could be
about. Bensu, being from Turkey, proposed
to focus on the topical issue of femicide as
domestic violence cases have been rising
all over the world this year due to
self-isolation and lockdown laws.
Weekly zoom meetings
The plan of staging the visual pieces in an
airport terminal was Emily’s suggestion, as
raising awareness to British tourists about
how serious femicide is in countries like
Turkey seemed like a positive idea.
RELEVANT TO ILO 2
25. Weekly zoom meetings
We have been conferring weekly about
how the visual pieces should look, what
content we should be focussing on and
what questions we should be asking
contributors. We have also been viewing
the edit that Max and Emily have been
working on as a group and giving
constructive feedback on what does and
doesn’t work. Production roles have also
been discussed during these meetings and
we have been deciding who should be
doing what.
ZOOM INTERVIEWS
In November, Bensu conducted the first zoom
interview with a women’s shelter
representative, and since then has conducted 2
more.
As she speaks fluent Turkish, she was able to
find the contributors online and contact them.
Each of these women were asked a series of
questions around why and how the current
crisis in Turkey got so serious and what can be
done by people to help & bring positive change.
Organisation

26. Organisation of documents
Grace set up a Google Drive folder where
we all put in our relevant documents, such
as contributor forms & our own collection
of black & white photos (see Appendix A &
B).
Similarly, Bensu shared the interview files
(video & audio) with the rest of the group
through using the Google Drive too.
(continued)
We found using Google Drive easy &
effective for sharing documents with the
whole group, as well as collaboratively
working on Google documents & slides too,
ensuring teamwork & collaboration on all
aspects of the project.
We also shared the links to these
spaces/Google Drive folders on a private
Slack group & a private Facebook
messenger group, to ensure that every
member of the team had easy access to all
the files.
Organisation of documents

RELEVANT TO ILO 2
27. Organisation of ourselves
Through weekly zoom calls & daily
communications through facebook
messenger, we set goals & time frames for
when certain tasks/production documents
needed to be completed & uploaded to the
shared spaces for. Keeping in frequent
contact helped us all work in unison, as
well as making it easier to advise each
other on certain aspects of production (i.e.
the framing of interviewees & the design of
our audiovisual pieces).
(continued)
Organisation
TEAM PARTICIPATION &
CONTRIBUTION
We collectively decided which tasks we will
individually take charge of, but emphasised
that as a group we are here to help and
support each other on all tasks. For example,
Bensu dealt with anything interviewee related
but we all collaboratively decided the
interviewee questions, the framing of the
interviewees & the ideal time frame of each
interview.
We made sure all group members had a say on
every aspect of the project through our
frequent & thorough communication.

Where in heathrow
airport?
Why?
Showing different versions of each video in
each terminal (the difference being the
interviewee & the 1st question answered)
means there would be no close screenings of
all the videos together, which could put
audiences off watching & taking in the
important information in the videos.
RELEVANT TO ILO 1
35. INTERVIEWS
Due to COVID-19 Pandemic, we were unable to record interviews in
person. This ultimately meant that all interviews had to be conducted
via zoom. We had little control over external factors like lighting and
sound, however we overcame this by positioning our interviewees
and also recording additional audio in case the zoom recording failed.
Due to our contributors only speaking Turkish, we had to translate
the conversation and add subtitles. This however worked to our
advantage as our piece not only felt more authentic but was also
accessible to a larger audience including the deaf community and
busy passers by who may be unable to hear the audio.
