Augustine was born to a pagan Roman official father and Christian mother. He studied law but also indulged in drinking, gambling, and took a mistress after leaving school. He was inspired by Bishop Ambrose to regularly attend church and reform his life, abandoning his sins and choosing to serve God instead. Ambrose's preaching helped Augustine find faith and see the light of God after struggling with his faith.
