1) A farmer owed a large debt to a female moneylender who wanted to marry his handsome son in exchange for forgiving the debt. 2) The moneylender proposed putting two pebbles in a bag - one black and one white - and having the son pick to determine if he must marry her. 3) However, the son noticed she put two black pebbles in the bag. Instead of picking, he pretended to drop the pebble so she couldn't see which he picked, cleverly resolving the dilemma.

3. Many years ago in a small Indian village, a farmer had the misfortune of owing a large sum of money to a female village moneylender. The female moneylender, who was old, fat and ugly, fancied the farmer‘s handsome son, Cliff. 很多年前在印度一個小村落中，有位農夫不幸欠了村中一名女放債人一大筆金錢。這位女債主既老又肥又醜，她喜愛農夫英俊的兒子，克里夫。

7. They were standing on a pebble-strewn path in the farmer's field. As they talked, the moneylender bent over to pick up two pebbles. As she picked them up, the sharp-eyed son noticed that she had picked up two black pebbles and put them into the bag. 15. Since the remaining pebble is black, it must be assumed that he had picked the white one. And since the moneylender dared not admit her dishonesty, the son changed what seemed an impossible situation into an extremely advantageous one. 由於剩下的鵝卵石是黑色的，必須假定他選擇了白色。而且由於債主不敢承認自己的不誠實，兒子改變了一個不可能的處境成為極為有利情況。
