This document summarizes research on promoting resilient and profitable family farming systems in central Mozambique. The research identified different household types in Marara district and Manica district based on surveys of 189 and 193 households respectively. In both districts, the majority of households were classified as "resource poor" but there was potential for some to "step up" through crop-livestock integration, diversification, and intensification. The research proposed various interventions tailored to different household types to support this transition in a way that improved both resilience and profitability.

This document discusses biomass as an energy source. It defines biomass as materials produced by biological systems that contain carbon compounds and stored solar energy. Sources of biomass include agriculture, forestry, food processing, and municipal/industrial waste. Biomass can be converted to energy through processes like combustion, anaerobic digestion to produce biogas, pyrolysis, and densification into pellets or briquettes. Biomass currently supplies 14% of the world's primary energy and technologies are being developed to increase its contributions and produce liquid and gaseous fuels from biomass.
This document summarizes research on crop-livestock intensification options for smallholder farmers in semi-arid Southern Zimbabwe. Household surveys were conducted to identify typologies based on resources. In Nkayi, four typologies were identified - young families, stepping up households, grey heads, and champions. In Gwanda, typologies included subsistence old/female, subsistence young/female, richest males, and specialized goat farmers. Participatory community workshops then identified preferred intensification pathways tailored to each typology's situation. These included improving crop-livestock integration, market access, and soil fertility management. The research aims to define context-specific solutions to sustainably increase agricultural production and food security.
