The British rule in India established a uniform system of administration with a unified legal system and civil services. Economically, British industrialization negatively impacted India's domestic industries, causing unemployment. The British introduced different land revenue systems - Zamindari (revenue collectors recognized as owners), Ryotwari (land measured and taxed based on quality), and Mahalwari (somewhat high assessment rates). While new industries and technologies were introduced, Indian cottage industries were destroyed. Education expanded with the introduction of English schools and universities, spreading literacy. Newspapers also grew, some criticizing British administration.
