Ο Βαρθολομαίος Ντιάζ, πεπειραμένος και αξιόπιστος πλοίαρχος,
επιφορτίστηκε από τον βασιλιά της Πορτογαλίας Ιωάννη Β΄ να εξερευνήσει
τις ακτές της Αφρικής, νότια του κόλπου της Γουινέας .
Αφού προετοίμασε το ταξίδι του με μεγάλη προσοχή, ξεκίνησε από τη
Λισσαβόνα, το 1487, με δύο καραβέλες και ένα εφοδιαστικό πλοίο, έχοντας
σαφείς εντολές: έπρεπε να πλεύσει όσο το δυνατόν πιο μακριά από τις
γνωστές περιοχές, με σκοπό να βρει το νοτιότερο άκρο της αφρικανικής
ηπείρου. Πράγματι, ο στολίσκος του Ντιάζ, μετά από ταξίδι τριών μηνών,
πέρασε το νοτιότερο σημείο στο οποίο είχαν φτάσει μέχρι τότε Πορτογάλοι
εξερευνητές και μπήκε σε αχαρτογράφητα νερά. Συναντώντας άγριες
καταιγίδες και προκειμένου να τις αποφύγει, ο Ντιάζ αποφάσισε να
πλεύσει ακόμη πιο νότια παρακάμπτοντας, χωρίς να το ξέρει, το νοτιότερο
άκρο της Αφρικής. Αφού ξέφυγε από την κακοκαιρία, κινήθηκε προς τα
βόρεια όπου συνάντησε, και πάλι, τις ακτές της Αφρικής. Κατά την
επιστροφή του συνειδητοποίησε τι ακριβώς είχε συμβεί. Παραπλέοντας τις
ακτές της νότιας Αφρικής, ο Ντιάζ εντόπισε ένα μεγάλο ακρωτήριο, με
βράχους από γρανίτη. Εκεί αποβιβάστηκε και εγκατέστησε τα σύμβολα της
πορτογαλικής κυριαρχίας, για να σημαδέψει αυτό που είχε εκλάβει ως το
νοτιότερο άκρο της Αφρικής. Στην πραγματικότητα είχε χάσει το νοτιότερο
άκρο της Αφρικής, που βρισκόταν πάνω από 200 χιλιόμετρα προς τα
νοτιοανατολικά. Ονόμασε την ανακάλυψή του Ακρωτήριο της Καλής
Ελπίδας. Φτάνοντας στην Πορτογαλία, στο τέλος του 1488, ύστερα από 16
μήνες ταξιδιού, έγινε δεκτός ως ήρωας. Ο δρόμος προς τις Ινδίες ήταν πια
ανοιχτός.
