Introduction
Yemen is considered a part of the Arabian Peninsula. The Peninsula is the
most important energy chokepoint of the world as well as a focal point for the
transit of the commodities and international trade. Yemeni proximity to the
Persian Gulf has increased its importance. Cultural, geographical, security and
economic characteristics of Yemen are of such a great complexity that when
they are considered holistically, the importance of this country in the regional
and trans-regional equations becomes so obvious.
Over recent months Yemen has encountered severe domestic unrests.
Yemen was one of the four Arabic countries that witnessed the overthrow of a
dictator and the establishment of a new government in 2011. However, the case
3. of Yemen differs from that of Libya, Egypt and Tunisia since a sham election in
the format of a one-horse race was held in Yemen through which the power
was assumed for a two-year transitional period by Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi
who was the vice-president of Ali Abdullah Saleh for 18 years. Therefore, no
real revolution took place in Yemen. Having served its two-year tenure, the
government of Mansur Hadi was not successful and was not able to draft the
new Yemeni constitution and to form the new government. Consequently, the
tenure of Mansur Hadi was extended for one year. This very extension resulted
in the emergence of popular dissatisfaction among Yemeni people and
revolutionaries.
Since June 2014 Yemen witnessed new anti-governmental demonstrations in
the course of which management and guidance of these protests were
transferred to the Yemeni Ansarullah movement.
Following these developments the Yemeni Peace, National
Partnership Agreement was signed on September 21, 2014 between Mansur
Hadi and the Ansarullah movement but this deal did not satisfy Mansur Hadi
and his regional as well as trans-regional supporters. As a result, too much
obstruction took place to prevent the increase of the Ansarullah’ power and
influence in Yemen but these efforts bore no fruits. Having seen the failure of
these efforts, Mansur Hadi and his prime minister submitted their resignations
aimed at exerting more pressure on the Ansarullah movement.
Finally, Saudi Arabia took Mansur Hadi to Eden to enable him to form a
parallel government there. Saudi Arabia wanted to transfer her embassy and
embassies of other member states of Persian Gulf Cooperation Council to Eden
in order to solidify its own foothold in Eden but the progresses made by the
Ansarullah movement to Eden prevented the execution of such a plan. In the
present study, issues including Yemen as the origin of Al-Qaida, reasons
attributed to Saudi invasion to Yemen and the chronicle of this invasion have
been investigated generally.
