Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).

2. Третий мир (развивающиеся страны) — те страны,
которые отстают в своем развитии от индустриально
развитых стран Запада со свободным рынком (Первый
мир) и индустриально развитых бывших
социалистических стран (Второй мир) .
Страны Третьего мира наиболее бедные, что
измеряется по уровню дохода в них на душу
населения, и сконцентрированы в основном в Азии,
Африке, и Латинской Америке.
3. АФРИКА
По большинству показателей Африка является слаборазвитым регионом.
Предпринимательская деятельность одного человека автоматически становится
семейной, что связано со многими причинами. Во-первых, такова особенность
африканского менталитета, который обязывает делиться с близкими. Во-вторых, основная
часть первоначального капитала собирается родственниками. В-третьих, доходы, которые
получает предприниматель, не направляются непосредственно на возмещение вложений
родственников в капитал, и его обязательства не заканчиваются после погашения и оплаты
процентов. Такой долг в виде помощи не имеет срока возврата, а является как бы
бессрочной инвестицией, приносящей прибыль родственникам, которые помогли начать
дело.
Организация всегда является одним из главных компонентов менеджмента предприятия.
Основное здесь — формирование организационной структуры и подбор исполнителей. В
этом случае африканский предприниматель, как правило, привлекает своих
родственников, которым он больше доверяет и кому обязан. И обычно персонал
подбирается не в соответствии с требуемым уровнем квалификации, а исходя из
сложившейся традиции. Когда среди кандидатов на работу есть младшие и старшие по
возрасту, ответственную вакансию получает самый старший из них.
4. Тот факт, что в наши дни страны Тропической Африки объединены в одной
цивилизации — "тропическоафриканская цивилизация", —открывает возможность
использования в них менеджмента в рамках единой концепции.
Предпринимательство как рискованное занятие нереально без рационального
управления. В то же время очевидно, что менеджмент в африканской экономике не
должен быть копией зарубежного опыта. Поэтому выявилась необходимость
осмысления концепции менеджмента, адаптирования ее к существующим условиям,
внесения качественно новых моментов, отвечающих особенностям африканской
цивилизации.
Стабильность предпринимательской деятельности тоже является одной из главных
целей предприятия, особенно в современных условиях, когда проблема занятости
стала глобальной. Предпринимательская деятельность, как правило, основана на
создании и развитии малых и средних предприятий. Организация новых рабочих мест
является единственным надежным путем борьбы с нарастающей безработицей,
особенно на Африканском континенте, где темпы прироста населения превышают
темпы роста ВВП и появления новых рабочих мест.
5. В странах Тропической Африки сама
необходимость разработки планов
развития наталкивается на некие
барьеры, в основном социально-
психологического характера. Тем не
менее и здесь планирование является
важнейшим и решающим элементом
процесса менеджмента.
6. АРАБСКИЕ СТРАНЫ
Арабские бизнесмены ценят искренность в переговорах и
рассчитывают на взаимное уважение. Они не увлекаются логическими
выводами, отдавая предпочтение в аргументации настойчивым
призывам и убеждениям. Одним из важнейших элементов на
переговорах является установление доверия между партнерами.
Представители арабских государств, как в обыденной обстановке, так и
во время деловых контактов стараются создать дружелюбную
обстановку, ценят юмор, используют личные имена. Очень важно
показать ваше желание иметь дело именно с этим партнером,
проявить свой глубоко личный интерес. Для решения сложных вопросов
арабы предпочитают использовать не официальные каналы, а личные
связи.
7. Большое значение арабы придают
контакту взглядов, поэтому при разговоре
нужно смотреть в глаза собеседника и
обязательно снять солнечные очки. Для
арабов друг- это человек, который не
может отказать в просьбе. Нельзя
отказывать в просьбе не только друзьям,
но и друзьям друзей.
Арабы постоянно ждут похвалы в случае
хорошо проделанной ими работы. Они
более болезненно реагируют на критику.
В арабских странах с глубоким
уважением относятся к печатному слову,
поэтому нельзя ничего заворачивать в
газету - на ней может быть напечатано
имя Аллаха. Корану принято
демонстрировать глубочайшее уважение.
8. ЛАТИНСКАЯ АМЕРИКА
В Латинской Америке очень много возможностей для развития
частного бизнеса, именно сюда сейчас устремлены взгляды многих
инвесторов, которые уже пресытились развитой Европой, США и
всемирной фабрикой по имени Китай. Здесь еще все только
развивается. Здесь не всегда есть хорошая инфраструктура, но это

моего друга, то давай попробуем что-то сделать. Здесь еще
встречается настоящая крепкая дружба – в понимании вышедших
из СССР.
9. Организации построены по типу пирамиды и централизация власти необходима.
Традиционно босс имеет широкие полномочия и пользуется большим уважением.
Статут босса и уважение к нему со стороны подчиненных демонстрируется
посредством размера его кабинета, его внешности, а также его ролью в принятии
решений, которые определяют политику компании. Во многих случаях босс обладает
авторитарной властью. Как правило, босс обязан не просто осуществлять контроль над
своими подчиненными, а быть их покровителем и наставником. К нему часто
обращаются с просьбами о предоставлении моральной и материальной помощи
семьи того или иного работника; любой работник может попросить босса стать
крестным отцом своего ребенка. Руководство крупных компаний обучает своих
подчиненных работе в командах, а также эгалитарному (уравнительному) стилю
управления. Процесс принятия решений в таких компаниях является
децентрализованным, а менеджеры осознают значимость коллективной работы. Рядовые
работники таких компаний постепенно начинают разделять эти ценности и проявлять
личную заинтересованность в развитии компании, ощущая себя частью огромного
процесса.
