The Roaring Twenties was a decade of economic prosperity and mass production in the United States following World War I. New industries like automobiles and radios grew rapidly due to affordable mass production. However, the passage of Prohibition led to the rise of bootleggers and speakeasies, and many Americans took on debt they could not repay, foreshadowing the Great Depression. Politically, the era was dominated by Republican presidents Warren Harding, Calvin Coolidge, and Herbert Hoover. Socially, lifestyles became more urban and focused on leisure, though traditional rural values still held sway for many Americans.

The Roaring Twenties saw major changes in women's fashion and morals as reflected in society and literature. Flappers emerged with a new style and freedoms as women's conditions changed following World War I. Notable authors like F. Scott Fitzgerald in The Great Gatsby and Virginia Woolf in A Room of One's Own captured and advanced this shift in women's roles and independence in the 1920s.
Women's fashion and lifestyles changed dramatically in the 1920s as a result of social and cultural shifts after World War 1. Young women, called "flappers", rebelled against traditional values by smoking, drinking, wearing revealing clothes like short dresses and no corsets, and dancing provocatively. Flappers cut their hair short, wore makeup, and sought independence, freedom of expression, and sexual liberation not seen in prior generations of women. Their unconventional behavior represented the social revolution of the Roaring Twenties era in America.
In the 1920s, women's fashion and hairstyles changed dramatically. Hemlines rose to the knee, corsets were abandoned, and short bobbed hair became very popular. The "flapper" style emerged, characterized by short skirts, visible stockings, makeup, and short hair. Flappers danced provocatively and smoked and drank in public, challenging social norms. Careers also opened up for women in fashion design, hairdressing, and dance performances like the Rockettes. Broadway and jazz music provided opportunities for women's self-expression and rebellion through dance. Overall, the 1920s saw women gaining newfound independence and social freedoms through fashion, hairstyles, careers, and public behaviors.
