Screen Printing With Water Based Inks: 5 SolutionsPrintavo
So many screen printing shops have a hard time working with water based inks.
It's not that water based inks are difficult. It's that most shops don't know where to start. They don't know they might want to get a reptile fogger (but I promise more on that later).
This article will answer 5 common questions about water based inks and give you tips you can use in your shop to get the most out of this exciting medium. There's some basic concepts to understand about working with water based inks before we dive in:
The less water you have in your ink, the harder it is to work with. Water based ink has lots of water in it (seems obvious, right?). But as the ink loses water, it becomes stubborn and hard to work with.
Think about water based ink like it's blood. If you get a small cut, it scabs up quickly. But a larger wound has flowing blood and won't immediately scab up or dry out.
Keep it moist, keep it moving. You've got to manage water based inks so they don't dry out and give you issues.
Let's go further into these eco-friendly, super-soft, ultra-durable, 100% breathable inks!

The Fascinating World of Bats: Unveiling the Secrets of the Night
Bats, the mysterious creatures of the night, have long been a source of fascination and fear for humans. With their eerie squeaks and fluttering wings, they have captured our imagination and sparked our curiosity. Yet, beyond the myths and legends, bats are fascinating creatures that play a vital role in our ecosystem.
There are over 1,300 species of bats, ranging from the tiny Kitti's hog-nosed bat to the majestic flying foxes. These winged mammals are found in almost every corner of the globe, from the scorching deserts to the lush rainforests. Their diversity is a testament to their adaptability and resilience.
Bats are insectivores, feeding on a vast array of insects, from mosquitoes to beetles. A single bat can consume up to 1,200 insects in an hour, making them a crucial part of our pest control system. They are also social animals, living in colonies and communicating with each other through a complex system of calls and body language.
Despite their importance, bats face numerous threats, from habitat destruction to climate change. Many species are endangered, and conservation efforts are necessary to protect these magnificent creatures.
In conclusion, bats are more than just creatures of the night; they are a vital part of our ecosystem, playing a crucial role in maintaining the balance of nature. Product Design Trends in 2024 | Teenage EngineeringsPixeldarts
The realm of product design is a constantly changing environment where technology and style intersect. Every year introduces fresh challenges and exciting trends that mold the future of this captivating art form. In this piece, we delve into the significant trends set to influence the look and functionality of product design in the year 2024.
How Race, Age and Gender Shape Attitudes Towards Mental HealthThinkNow
Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).

2. FIRSTLY…. Thank you for your purchase , we are ce rtain that you will have
many ye ars of use from your HVLP Spray Tanning Machine and “Thank You”
for choosing “Comple te Tanning Solutions!
I would like to share with you a brief outline of who we are and how we came
about getting into this explosive industry. Well, we started in the tanning
industry, back in 2001 where we bought and sold indoor tanning equipment so,
there is not a lot we donʼt know about the skin and tanning!
We were fortunate enough to get involved with a leading Australian Spray
Tanning Company who pioneered the spray tanning evolution and we learnt a
great deal about this new sunless generation.
We set about creating the very best HVLP Spray Gun that money could buy and
had many failures in the initial stages. We invested a great deal of research and
development, money, time, effort and energy into getting it right and we firmly
believe that we have got it right because, they say that “Imitation is the best
form of flattery”??
There are a number of HVLP Spray Guns available on the market that look like
ours but, they are not! As I have mentioned, we invested time and money into
our spray gun, so we know just how good it is because, we built it!
Every product we sell, we have either created personally or sourced personally…
We formulated our own solution in our kitchen at home some years back and
have watched it evolve into a high selling product. We have just finished
working with a leading cosmetic manufacturer in Hong Kong to improve our
solution and we are ecstatic with the results and 100% certain that you will be to.
Early in 2010 we decided to relocate our business to Hong Kong to better serve
our customers demands from all over the world! We have logistical warehousing
in Australia, the USA, the UK and New Zealand. We own the majority of the
intellectual property for our range of products except the turbine and the tent.
However, we have additional quality control in place for the manufacturing of
these two products.
The Turbine has always been manufactured in China because there is only one
manufacturer in the whole world for this particular turbine and our spray gun is
now manufactured in Taiwan, we have set up our factory there to produce the
same quality product that was produced in Australia. Our disposables and
accessories have always been manufactured in China under our specifications
and the sunless tanning solution is now manufactured in Hong Kong.
This move has been a huge step for us personally and professionally and we just
wanted to assure you that your warranty and the quality of our spray tanning
equipment and accessories will never be jeopardized by our move to Hong Kong
If you are worried about anything at all please do not hesitate to contact me
personally at Sandra@completetanningsolutions.com so, go on and have some
fun with your new spray tanning equipment.

4. Turbine Filter
All Australian and UK Machines come standard with the Turbine Filter.
USA machines are not fitted with them as yet but, if you would like one
when you place your next order please request one to be included with
your order ‘complimentary’
If your machine includes a filter, please fit it to the base of your turbine
where the machine draws in the air. You can hand wash the filter
material in warm soapy water and rinse it in cool water and allow to air
dry as required.
You can also place a small drop of your favourite aromatherapy oil onto
the filter material to give your room a fresh scent.
We do not cover the warranty for a turbine that has been neglected. It
is important to wash the filter and to keep the turbine in a clean air
environment.
HVLP Advanced Spray Gun
Your new spray tanning system uses a HVLP Advanced Spray Tanning
Gun. HVLP is (High Volume Low Pressure). This is the type of spraying that
allows you to spray accurately but, without the overspray that occurs
with high pressure “air type” equipment. This particular spray gun is
extremely easy to use, very safe and reduces the amount of solution
used. The soft air deposits the solution more efficiently on the skin, reducing waste
and overspray. The high volume and low pressure results in a faster application time,
due to the larger fan pattern that puts out more solution at one time.
HVLP allows for total body application in less than seven (7) minutes and because of
the reduced application time, with HVLP spraying it decreases operator fatigue, and
more clients can be sprayed in a given time frame, allowing for the possibility of
increased profits.

• “WASH IN HOT SOAPY WATER FIRST - BEFORE FIRST USE, THEN RINSE THOROUGHLY
IN COLD WATER” – Remove the cup from the spray gun and then fill a sink or
bucket with warm soapy water.
• Turn the "fluid adjusting screw "anti-clockwise to increase the amount of fluid
and place the top section of the spray gun in the bucket or sink and pull the
trigger a few times to allow the soapy water to flow through the gun.
• THEN RINSE THOROUGHLY IN COLD WATER. – remember to reduce the amount of
fluid that will come out by turning the “fluid adjusting screw” clockwise before
spraying your next client. THEN ALLOW YOUR GUN TO AIR DRY OR SHAKE IT DRY
• YOU SHOULD WASH/RINSE YOUR SPRAY GUN AT THE END OF EVERY DAY AS PER
THE ABOVE INSTRUCTIONS.
• REMEMBER – to place the seal back in the correct way – as per the image

9. Some Further Tips……..
• Make sure you push the fluid pipe as per figure #10 firmly into the spray
gun.
• You are now ready to fill the cup with your solution but, do not over fill it.
Do this on a flat surface and then carefully tighten the top section of the
gun onto the cup and close it tight.
• Adjust the fluid adjusting screw so, there is no pull on the trigger and then
turn the fluid adjusting screw anti-clockwise a little at a time so that ONLY
a small amount of lotion is coming out when you pull the trigger.
• Less is best, until you have mastered your technique
• Always remember to keep the gun fairly level and follow the natural
contour of the body and keep the gun the same distance from the body
at all times.
• If the trigger is ever a little sticky, turn the “fluid adjusting screw” anti-
clockwise so, there is a lot of give in the trigger and pull the trigger back
and forth a few times BUT, remember to reduce the amount of fluid by
turning the “fluid adjusting screw” clockwise before spraying your next
client
• If the solution is bubbling or running on the skin then please check the
following:
Spraying too close
Spraying too slow
Too much solution is coming out, you need to reduce the amount of
solution by turning the fluid adjustment screw clockwise
Or it could be all of the above it, is a process of elimination until you are
comfortable with your technique
• Remember to screw the cup up as tightly as you can, if the solution is
bubbling inside the cup them you need to check that you have the
black seal in correctly and that you have pushed the fluid pipe in tight
enough and finally that you have screwed the cup onto the gun firmly

Spraying Patterns.
Look at the front of your spray gun and you will notice the images below on the
right, look like the front of your gun.
If you loosen off the black screw as per figure #9 please refer to the image 1 at
the front of this manual. You will be able to turn the “air cap” as per figure #8 –
This will actually change the pattern in which the solution comes out, as per the
following.
Horizontal: Adjust the nozzle in the horizontal position for the vertical flat jet.
This position can be used to spray from side to side but, is not normally
recommended
Vertical: Adjust the nozzle in the vertical position for the horizontal flat jet.
This is the normal position of the nozzle for spraying up and down.
Horizontal Flat Jet
Round: Adjust the nozzle in an angled position for corners, edges and other hard
to reach places.
This position is NOT recommended as is it difficult to see a start and finishing point
with your solution.

11. Tips for spraying
When you are comfortable with the operation of your spray tanning
system, you are ready to begin spraying.
Remember these very important points:
• Always have the cup at least half full before every spray tan
• Always work from head to toe.
• Hold the spray gun approximately 8-10 inches from the surface of
the skin.
• Do not tilt the spray gun.
• Always keep it perpendicular to the surface of the skin.
• Spray the entire body at a relaxed speed.
• Slow movements will result in an unwanted build up of colour and
the solution will bubble on the skin.

Caring For Your Spray System
Cleaning your system is paramount, the spray gun, turbine and its cup should be
cleaned at the end of every day it is used.
Remove the hose from the spray gun.
1. Over a sink, carefully unscrew the solution cup from the spray gun.
2. Pour any remaining solution back into the bottle or store the solution in the
refrigerator (but not below 4 degrees) and screw the lid up tightly.
3. Remove the pipe that is now visible by holding the stem and twisting. (Note: The
pipe will stain over a period of time. Please be aware that this is normal and will
in no way effect the spray gun’s ability to operate.)
4. Remove the round rubber seal that sits between the spray gun’s body and cup.
If this is not done regularly, solution will get caught under the seal each time the
cup is removed. When replacing the seal, be absolutely certain that the ridge is
face up into the gun.
Fluid Adjusting
Screw
Fluid Pipe
5. Thoroughly rinse all the components with water. Press the trigger and allow water
to flow freely through all parts of the spray gun. Continue until the water flows
clear again. Shake the gun a few more times and rinse again.
6. Reverse the procedure to put the spray gun together again. (Note: The bend in
the pipe should always face forward, see Figure 2.)
7. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO WIPE YOUR TURBINE AT THE END OF EVERY DAY –
ESPECIALLY WHERE THE “AIR VENT” , WHICH IS UNDERNEATH THE TURBINE. YOU
MUST KEEP THIS AREA CLEAN AND THE AREA IN WHICH YOU ARE SPRAY TANNING.
IF YOU DON’T KEEP THE AIR VENT CLEAN AND CLEAR THE MACHINE WILL START
OVERHEATING – THIS WILL NOT BE COVERED BY “WARRANTY”

14. 5.
Care & Storage…
Please ensure that all solution is stored in the refrigerator, remove prior
to spraying to allow the solution to come to room temperature. Never
allow your solution to exceed 20 degrees or go below 4 degrees.
my tan has been specially formulated to give you long lasting superior
colour. However, if at any time the solution is stored or handled
incorrectly, the ability of the solution to perform will be adversely
effected. In order to maintain consistent colour, and performance, my
tan sunless solution needs to be handled with extreme care.
Cleaning and Maintaining Your Spray Gun
Remove all the solution from your spray gun at the end of every day and clean you
gun as per the instructions above.
Once a month…
Remove the needle and or spray nozzle and wipe with a soft cloth dipped in cleaner.
Clean any residue on the surface of the nozzle and brush.
Do not ever immerse your spray unit or spray gun in a solvent – this will not be
covered by “warranty”
Always clean your spray unit when you are finished using it or whenever it may be
unused for an extended period of time.
Remember: Sunless tanning solution’s balance of ingredients can be adversely
affected by equipment that has not been cleaned and maintained properly.
Tip: Spattering or spitting of the sunless solution is a sign of a dirty spray gun.
Care and Storage
Sunless solution is a formulated and balanced chemical recipe for providing natural
looking tan color. You will get the intended results with normal use under standard
conditions. However if the product is miss-handled or stored improperly its
performance can be adversely effected. Very much like food products, it must be
stored carefully to maintain freshness.
Sunless solution should be handled carefully to maintain its performance, efficacy,
consistency and color. The following are a few basic steps to eliminating sunless
solution irregularities:
Complete Tanning SOLUTIONS Pty Ltd “Spray Tanning Training Manual” 26112009 page 14
15. Heat
The solution needs to be stored in a cool, dry place, preferably in the
refrigerator but, not below 4 Degrees. Exposure to pro-longed high
temperatures will destroy the solution’s effectiveness. When traveling
with solution, only take what is needed and avoid leaving solution in the
car. We suggest you store your solution in a wine cooler bag with some
ice packs to maximize effectiveness.
Exposure to light
The solution will not be harmed by accidental exposure to sunlight
however repeated or prolonged exposure will reduce the products
ability to perform.
Refrigeration
Store product in a cool, dark place. Refrigerating the solution is highly
recommended. Repeated or prolonged storage at high temperatures will reduce
the products effectiveness.
Rotate
Rotate your inventory regularly. The solution has a limited shelf life and should be used
in the order in which it is received from your supplier.
Never, ever mix….
Do not pour new solution into solution that is more than a few days old. Adding new
product does not “refresh” the quality of old product or make it “new” again. In fact,
the old product may reduce the effectiveness of the new product being added.
Contact with metal
The solution is made up of ingredients which will react with elements in
the skin and also metallic objects. DO NOT pour solution through a metal
funnel, stir with a metal spoon or keep stored in a metal container.
Contact with any of these objects will reduce the product’s ability to
perform. Only stainless steel is safe to be used without the solution being
affected.
Oxygenation
Prolonged exposure to air will reduce the solution’s ability to perform.
DO NOT leave the cap off for an extended length of time as there is a
possibility that bacteria may grow.
Remember: Your tanning solution’s balance of ingredients can be
adversely affected by storage and equipment that has not been
cleaned and maintained properly.

Introduction to Skin and Sunless Tanning
Sunless tanning has been identified as one of the fastest growing trends offering
indoor tanning salons a new way to build business and increase profits. Since its
inception in the 1960’s, sunless tanning has come a long way and can now be found
in tanning salons, department stores and chemists all over the world.
To provide a competitive edge to salons offering HVLP spray tanning we have
developed this training manual, based on research and testing conducted by some
of the leading manufacturers of sunless spray systems. This manual will take you from
setup, to application while discussing technique, safety, pricing and more.
What Is DHA And How Safe Is It?
DHA is dihydroxyacetone, a carbohydrate (monosaccharide sugar) compound
approved by the FDA for use in externally applied sunless tanning solutions. DHA is
usually derived from a vegetable source like beets or sugar cane. Its properties as a
skin darkener were discovered in the 1920's but weren't marketed as such until the
1960's when Coppertone® introduced Quick Tan®. It was added to the FDA's list of
approved cosmetic ingredients in the 1970's. DHA is the tanning ingredient used in
self-tanning solutions that has produced more than 2 million sunless tans with no
documented reports of adverse effects.
The tanning industry recognises DHA as the colourless sugar that makes the magic
happen in the self tanning process. DHA reacts with skin proteins, including amino
acids, in the outermost layer of the skin. The reaction develops brown skin colouring
that looks very similar to a natural tan. Skin colouration takes anywhere from two to
four hours to develop and lasts approximately 4 to 7 days. This depends on the skin
type, the DHA concentration and the preparation to the skin prior to spraying. The
tan fades as the dead layers of skin slough off, just as in a normal tan.
Is It Safe To Ingest DHA?
While no one should purposely swallow any form of sunless solution, DHA is a non-
hazardous compound and causes no adverse reaction in the quantities found in
most tanning solutions. DHA has been used as a dietary supplement in sports nutrition
and it is non-carcinogenic. Testing has further shown that DHA is less toxic than aspirin,
caffeine, and even common table salt.
How Safe Is It To Inhale my tan Tanning Solution?
DHA has a health risk rating of "0-Minimal" and is not considered a toxic material. The
Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has established "Permissible
Exposure Limits" (PEL) ratings that represent the allowable airborne concentration of a
toxic material, to which an employee can be exposed during an 8-hour shift without
personal respirators.

17. 7.
Lets first look at “How Skin Works”
Skin is one of the most amazing organs in the human body. It is hard for us to think
about it as an organ, however. We tend to think of organs as boxy things. Your heart,
liver, kidneys - those are obviously organs. But skin is an organ too, especially if you
look at the dictionary definition of "organ", like this definition from the Merriam
Webster Collegiate Dictionary:
Organ - a) differentiated structure (as a heart, kidney, leaf, or stem) consisting of
cells and tissues and performing some specific function in an organism b)
bodily parts performing a function or cooperating in an activity <the eyes
and related structures that make up the visual organs>
By that definition, skin is definitely an organ. Skin is made up of very specific cells and
tissues, and their collective purpose is to act as the boundary between "you" and "the
world". One of the neat things about skin that makes it different from a lot of other
organs is the fact that it does have to deal with the real world. Therefore it is loaded
with sensors, and it also has a very tough layered design so that it can handle realities
of the environment like abrasion and sunlight.
If you take a look at a cross section of typical skin (like the skin on your arm or leg) you
find that it is made up of two main layers: the epidermis on the outside and the
dermis on the inside. The epidermis is the barrier, while the dermis is the layer
containing all the "equipment" - things like nerve endings, sweat glands, hair follicles
and so on.
Here's a picture to help you see what is going on:
Complete Tanning SOLUTIONS Pty Ltd “Spray Tanning Training Manual” 26112009 page 17
18. In the subcutaneous layer (you may have heard of subcutaneous fat - this is where it
lives) you can see the blood vessels (shown as two thin red and blue lines). These
vessels branch infinitely (not shown) into the dermis to supply the sweat glands, hair
follicles, sebaceous glands and erector muscles with blood. They also fan out into the
dermis's capillary bed.
It turns out that the dermis is loaded with capillaries. Capillaries satisfy the nutritional
needs of the cells in the dermis, and they also help the skin perform an important
cooling function in humans. The epidermis has no direct blood supply, but instead is
supported and fed by the dermis. As shown in the diagram, the dermis contains
sweat glands, hair follicles (each with its own tiny little muscle so that your "hair can
stand on end"!), nerve endings and so on. There are several different types of nerve
endings:
• Heat sensitive
• Cold sensitive
• Pressure sensitive
• Itch sensitive
• Pain sensitive
All these different nerve endings let you sense the world. They also help you protect
yourself from burns, punctures, etc. by warning you when something is damaging
your skin. The epidermis is your interface to the world, and it is actually quite
interesting. It has two main layers, the inner of which is living and the outer of which is
dead. The dead skin cells of the outer layer are what we can actually see, and they
are constantly flaking off and being replaced by new cells being pushed outward.
The living, inner layer is called the malpighian layer. The malpighian layer creates the
dead cells that we can see. It is in direct contact with the dermis, which feeds and
supports it. The malpighian layer is our focus of attention actually, because it is here
that the sun affects the skin during tanning.
The malpighian layer is itself layered like this:
• In direct contact with the dermis is the basal layer. If you have ever heard of a
basal cell carcinoma (cancer), this is where it starts.
• Above the basal layer is the spinous layer.
• Above the spinous layer is the granular layer.
Above the granular layer is the stratum corneum. The stratum corneum is the outer
layer of dead cells - the cells that we see as our skin. The cells in this layer are filled
with a protein called keratin. Keratin is a very interesting protein because it is tough -
horns, hair, hoofs, fingernails and feathers all gain their strength from keratin. The
same substance that your fingernails are made of actually forms your visible skin (but
in a much thinner and more flexible layer). Which is what makes your skin so tough? In
parts of the body that get a lot of wear, like the palms and the feet, the stratum
corneum is thicker to handle the abrasion. Living among the basal cells in the
malpighian layer is another type of cell called a melanocyte.
Melanocytes produce melanin, which is a pigment that is the source of tanning. The
melanocytes are actually where a tan comes from. Here is what the Encyclopedia
Britannica has to say about melanocytes:
Complete Tanning SOLUTIONS Pty Ltd “Spray Tanning Training Manual” 26112009 page 18
19. 8.
So, How does sunless tanning work…
If you've read the above, you now know that skin is made up of two main layers: the
epidermis on the outside and the dermis on the inside. Whether you are talking about
sun tanning or self-tanning, the epidermis is where the action occurs. The epidermis is
also made up of layers. The deepest layer of the epidermis, called the stratum basale
(basal layer), is affected during sun tanning. The stratum corneum (horny layer) is the
outermost layer of the epidermis -- it is this layer that is affected by most sunless-
tanning products.
DHA is a colorless sugar that interacts with the dead cells located in the stratum
corneum of the epidermis. As the sugar interacts with the dead skin cells, a colour
change occurs. This change usually lasts about five to seven days from the initial
application. Every day, millions of dead skin cells are sloughed off or worn away from
the surface of your skin. In fact, every 35 to 45 days, you have an entirely new
epidermis. This is why tans from sunless- or self-tanning lotions will gradually fade -- as
the dead cells are worn away, so is your tan.
It's important to remember that unless the product contains an added sunscreen, it
will not protect you from the sun's UVA and UVB rays. Even products that do contain a
sunscreen won't be of much help, since they lose their efficacy within hours of
application. So, if you're planning to head outside to show off your new glow, be sure
to apply some extra sunscreen.
Most sunless tanning products use Dihydroxyacetone (DHA), as the active “tanning”
ingredient. DHA is a skin safe sugar derivative, which has been used in the cosmetic
industry for over 30 years. DHA interacts with the outermost, surface skin layer,
producing a golden brown color that resembles the coloration of a UV based tan.
DHA reacts with the naturally occurring amino acids and keratin proteins, in the
“dead” skin cells resting on the skin surface. This process is called the "Maillard
Reaction". It is very similar to the reaction that you see when you cut a potato or an
apple slice, and leave it exposed to the air. Skin colouration can take anywhere from
two to six hours and may last anywhere from four to seven days depending on the
skin type, DHA concentration in the lotion and the degree of after tan care
performed by the client. Just like a normal tan, a sunless tan will fade as the dead
layers of skin shed.
The difference between ‘clear’ solution and solution with a ‘bronzer’ Clear solution is
completely colourless while solution with a bronzer simply means there is a colour
guide in the solution. Use of a colour guide gives your client the ‘instant gratification’
tan.
Complete Tanning SOLUTIONS Pty Ltd “Spray Tanning Training Manual” 26112009 page 19
20. 9.
Working with your client
Skin replaces itself naturally every 28 days. Twenty-five percent of skin is
exfoliated each week, causing a UV tan to wear away. Sunless spray
tans affect only the top 25 percent of skin. Sunless tanners should use a
tan-extending program to maintain the level of the sunless tan longer.
Spray tanning is a new experience for many people and their first session
can be quite daunting. The best way to help your client relax is to
explain to them what is involved. People will quickly and easily relax
when they know you are well educated and comprehensive in your
knowledge of application because they feel they are in safe hands.
Before spraying, here are a few hints…
Before spraying their face, hold the spray gun up to the client’s
face and tell them to close their eyes and also tell them to feel the
air pressure. Explain to your client that it is important for them to
keep their eyes closed, relax and to hold their breath for the
duration of the spray.
Inform your client about the process of sunless tanning and how
DHA (dihydroxyacetone) works.
Discuss with them the reason we use a bronzer in our solution and
reiterate to them that the bronzer will wash off and will also come
off onto their clothes
Make your client aware that DHA is a natural ingredient derived
from sugar cane.
Don’t forget to run your client through the important steps of
maintaining a sunless tan. Remind them to avoid wearing tight
clothing immediately after their spray, to wait 6-8 hours before
showering, to avoid swimming or extended physical activity and
try to apply moisturiser twice daily where possible.
Explain to your client that when they next have a shower they will
see the cosmetic bronzer wash off in the shower and the DHA
would have had time to develop. It will continue to develop over
the next 24 hours.
Maintain an informative conversation to help relax the client.
We advise against trying to achieve very dark levels as this may result in patchiness or
cosmetic problems.
Just remember my tan is only designed to achieve natural results.

Skin Preparation & Application
1. Before your client arrives, always check that the equipment is set up and
functioning correctly.
2. Ensure your solution is near to room temperature before use.
3. Always place the system behind you (the operator) where the operator will
stand and away from the spray area. This allows for a trouble-free performance
and ensures the turbine breathes clean air.
Preparing your client
Prior to spraying your client, reconfirm that their body is free of any
• moisturisers
• oils
• jewellery and;
• their hair is tied up away from their neck
Take your time to relax your client and explain the treatment to them. Fill them in
on what to expect and what they are required to do throughout the process.
Stand your client on a small towel. This is VERY important as excess spray on the
floor will cause darkening to the soles of their feet.
As the customer turns in the booth it is good to get your client to use their feet to
rotate the towel. This allows the excess solution to be gathered underneath the
towel and not on their feet.
ALWAYS ensure your next client has a clean towel on the floor before they arrive
for their appointment and the general area is clean.
Before sunless-tanning, your skin should be clean and dry with no soap residue to
interfere with your tan. Avoid bar soap.
Do not apply deodorant or perfumes to skin prior to tanning. It is recommended
to shave the day before a spray tan. It is also, recommended you remove
makeup before the tanning process, but it is not absolutely necessary.
Remove any jewelry when being sprayed.
Select an old, preferably dark bathing suit to wear while being sprayed. Also
remember to bring old dark-colored, loose-fitting clothing to wear home.
Although the likelihood for an allergic reaction is very small, a patch test is
recommended for persons who have a known sensitivity to sunless products or the
ingredients in them, including fragrances.
After all sunless treatments, wait at least six to eight hours before bathing or exercise to
allow the DHA enough time to begin the tanning process.

Preparing your client over the phone…
In order for your sunless solution to achieve maximum results, your
client must follow a few simple steps in preparation for their spray tan:
Exfoliate their entire body before their appointment paying extra
close attention to the knees, under the arms, ankles, tops of the
feet, elbows and décolletage area.
Explain to your client the following:
-NO deodorant
-NO perfume or oils
-NO body sprays
-NO moisturisers
-NO make-up
-NO jewellery
-NO bra
-NO shoes
-NO contact with water for at least six (6) hours and
-NO physical activity
-It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that your client wears
LOOSE, DARK clothing.
Explain the following three (3) points to your client:
1. If the above guidelines are NOT adhered to, you (the
technician) CANNOT be held responsible for any unwanted
outcome.
2. Once a period of 6-8 hours has passed your client may shower
using a lightly perfumed body wash.
3. It is important not to have the shower too hot or to be in there
for a long time. Explain to your client to dab their body dry
when they get out of the shower and to moisturise twice daily
where possible. This will stop the tan breaking up on the skin.
If at any time you are uncertain about any of the above information,
please contact NEW SKIN TECHNOLOGY for further assistance.

General Application
When you are comfortable with the operation of the spray tanning
system, you are ready to begin spraying.
Remember these very important points:
Always work from head to toe.
Hold the spray gun 6-8 inches from the surface of the skin.
Do not tilt the spray gun. Always keep it perpendicular to the surface
of the skin.
Spray the entire body at a relaxed speed. (Slow movements will
result in an unwanted build up of colour).
Spray the contours of your client’s body so that you obtain an even
coverage and eliminate overspray
Complete Tanning SOLUTIONS Pty Ltd “Spray Tanning Training Manual” 26112009 page 25

Successful Spraying
The following instructions are just meant to be a starting point. You will soon develop
your own style and technique. You can make a few adjustments to your gun and
spray in a horizontal (back and forth) spray pattern. Experiment and have fun.
Important
Keep a steady pace and follow through. Always start and stop your spray off the
body. If you find positions requiring you to end on the body slowly let off the spray
trigger and quickly pull the gun back away from the body.
1. Spray consistently and evenly. Always begin on the client’s back. If runs or dark
patches occur during spraying, use a small towel to sponge the area to absorb
any excess solution, then dry and re-apply.
DO NOT spray the palms of the hands.
2. The back of the hands and fingers only require a very light spray for an effective
tanning result. Spray lightly once and then dab the area then re-spray the area
again. Remember LESS IS BEST!
3. Before applying the solution to your clients face, consult them first. Only a very
light application is needed. Always make sure their eyes are completely closed
and that they are totally relaxed without any facial expressions evident and that
they hold their breath for the duration of the facial spray.
4. Conduct a visual inspection over the entire body and a check that the colour is
uniform.
5. Turn the spray system off. Press the “Mains On” button to turn the system off.
6. We recommend after 5 weeks of continuous spray tanning, that
individuals should have a 10 day rest period. This is very important as
it allows skin to rejuvenate and eliminates signs of patchiness
resulting from unintentional contact with clothes and accessories.
In most cases, a sunless tan can be maintained for a longer period
of time on healthy, moist skin. Results will vary depending on the
individual.
Begin spraying your client with their back facing towards you. Ask them to stand
comfortably with their legs apart and keep their arms out from the waist.
Before spraying the backside and legs, ask your client to bend forward from the
waist, without bending their knees, to improve access to skin around the top of the
legs and backside area.
Complete Tanning SOLUTIONS Pty Ltd “Spray Tanning Training Manual” 26112009 page 26
27. Ask your client to turn 90 degrees to their right, each time so that you can easily
remember what area is to be sprayed next. Remember to always concentrate
on the area that is in front of you.
Complete Tanning SOLUTIONS Pty Ltd “Spray Tanning Training Manual” 26112009 page 27
28. Women with larger breasts need to place their hands either over their head so
the skin sitting under the fold of the breast can be reached.
If this is not enough, ask them to gently hold them up with their fingers being very
careful not to spray their fingers.
Complete Tanning SOLUTIONS Pty Ltd “Spray Tanning Training Manual” 26112009 page 28
29. Once you have sprayed their breasts, fold a tissue into a triangle and place the
tissue under one breast at a time. The pressure from the breast will hold the
tissues in place.
Work your way down to their feet. Ask the client to turn one leg out at a time
and spray from the top down to their ankle; remembering not to spray too much
around the ankle area.
When spraying the legs DO NOT spray the knee area at this point!
Complete Tanning SOLUTIONS Pty Ltd “Spray Tanning Training Manual” 26112009 page 29
30. Feet
Spray one light coat on your client’s feet and dab with a towel. Remember to
pay particular attention to the toe area. Dry the feet and apply a very light
second coat.
Knees
Now for the knees….Ask our client to carefully bend their knees and lightly spray
and dry them before they stand up again.
Complete Tanning SOLUTIONS Pty Ltd “Spray Tanning Training Manual” 26112009 page 30
31. The Face
• Spray the face in seven ‘quick’ steps as follows: REMEMBER…. It is
easy to add a little more than remove it!!!!
• Do not spray into the ear canal.
• Tanning solution is not absorbed by hair and will typically wash out after the first
shower.
Complete Tanning SOLUTIONS Pty Ltd “Spray Tanning Training Manual” 26112009 page 31
32. End of First Coat
Your client should be back in the starting position with their back facing you.
Second Coat
Now apply a second coat of sunless solution to your client exactly how you applied
the first coat BUT much, much quicker!!
Always check your client has a nice even application and be certain that you have
applied enough solution.
It is normal for your client to feel a slight stickiness for 10 to 20 minutes after being
sprayed while the remainder of the solution is absorbed into the skin.
ALWAYS WIPE THE EQUIPMENT CLEAN THE AREA BETWEEN CLIENTS
Some Suggested Pricing
Spray tans can vary in price depending on the area and clientele. Below
is a suggested pricing guide to help you construct an appropriate
pricing schedule to use.
Full Body $35
Face, Arms & Chest $20
Legs $15
In addition to a pricing schedule for casual visits, you may want to
promote tanning packages for your regular clients to purchase.
Implementing such packages will attract more business and keep your
bookings full!
Buy 5 and get 1 FREE $150
Buy 10 and get 2 FREE $300
or similarly, introduce client loyalty cards where each time a client
comes in for a spray tan they receive a stamp on their card. When they
fill their card with stamps, they are eligible for 1 free session or a
percentage off their next tanning package.

Q: What Can Destroy A DHA Tan?
1. Some brands of soaps and lotions can cause rapid or poor fading, or poor tan
development. Cheap soaps can be problematic for many clients.
2. Hair Inhibiting Lotions can cause a yellow tone.
3. Anti-aging, Smoothing, or Skin Renewal products can increase fading or blotchiness.
4. AHA's (Alpha Hydroxy Acids -glycolic, lactic, Malic, citric and Tartaric acids) can speed
exfoliation and skin turnover.
5. BHA's (Beta Hydroxy Acids-salicylic acid) can increase fading, or lighten a tan.
6. Retin-A type products (Retin-A, Renova, Tazorac, and Tretinoin) can increase fading or
blotchyness.
7. Toners containing high amounts of Alcohol or Witch Hazel can fade a tan (Witch Hazel
EXTRACT is fine)
8. Anti-acne products can cause faster fading, peeling, blotchiness (Accutane, Salicylic acid)
9. Any medication that affects the skin or skin heath can also affect the tan. Antibiotics used
for Acne or fungal infections, chemotherapy drugs, etc.
10. Makeup remover cleaning preparations or oils, can fade a tan.
11. Bar soaps, even moisturizing ones can be very harsh on skin and a sunless tan. Deodorant
types should also be avoided.
12. Do not use a rough wash implement for daily washing. (loofas, scrub mitts, scrub gloves etc.)
Gently use a soft washcloth or soft poof
13. Adhesive tape, or products applied to skin, can pull the "tan" off. (surgical tape, bandage
tape, peel off facial strips)
14. Hair removal procedures and depilatory products, (Nair, Veet, Neet etc.) will lighten
tanned skin. Waxing will also fade or remove a tan
15. Shaving exfoliates skin so have clients use a sharp razor with clean rinsing lubricating
product. Dull shaving equipment can increase fading or cause stripes. Some shaving
lubricants can leave coatings on the skin.
16. Body hair bleach products will also bleach the underlying skin
17. Submersion in hot tubs, long hot baths, swimming pools, fresh or salt water (a waterproof sun
block helps) Reapply a touchup/maintainer lotion after swimming if needed and always pat
dry after bathing or swimming, do not rub.
18. Women may “tan” differently during various hormonal changes. (Menstruation, pregnancy,
breastfeeding)
19. Oily skinned clients or oily skin areas (face, chest, neck, upper back) tan lighter than
surrounding skin.
20. Lower legs/shins often tan lighter. So apply more products here.
2 1 . Insect repellant sprays, and some perfumes when sprayed directly onto skin, remove or fade
tan. Instead spray a cloud into air, and walk through the mist.
