H
appy New Year! I am so excited to share
with you the 1st edition of the new Spotlight
Magazine. I hope you enjoy reading it as much
as I did creating it. In the new Spotlight Magazine, you
can find trends for 2015, niche products, and more.
	 We are just days away from the 89th Trade Expo. Every year
our show gets bigger and better. Store Brand is launching their new Skin Care
line Awaken by Quality Choice. You will love the new fresh look; it will really stand
out on the shelves. Awaken will launch in the Store Brand Forum at the Trade
Expo, with a full beauty kiosk on display to give you the opportunity to try the
products. Don’t forget to attend the Store Brand Enrichment Program on Tuesday
to learn about Private Label beauty trends.
We filled our Trade Floor with exciting new vendors, across all categories; Health
& Beauty, General Merchandise, Consumables, and Equipment, Services
& Supplies. New this year we will host a Welcome Reception on the Trade Floor,
giving Buyers the opportunity to preview the floor on Wednesday the night before
the Trade Floor opens.
For the first time, we will be offering a buyer’s lounge on the trade floor,
featuring our Product Showcase and Buyer Samples.
For every order placed on the Trade Floor, Buyers will be entered into a drawing
to win up to $100. Drawings will take place every hour and winners must be
present on the Trade Floor to win.
Last, but not least, the Seasonal and Everyday Showrooms. Where you can
source Health & Beauty, Consumables, General Merchandise, and Seasonal
products not available on the Trade Floor.
After the Chairman’s Dinner, we will be hosting a Casino Night to get us in the
Spirit for our 90th Trade Expo in Las Vegas. We will have slot machines,
blackjack, craps, wheel of fortune, a photo booth, caricature artists, and more!

The best impulse items are easy to understand and
offer limited options. In addition unusual, low cost
items and attention grabbing colors are equally
effective. Lastly, don’t underestimate the cute factor!

LOCATION IS KEY
The general assumption is that impulse items only
succeed at the checkout. While checkouts offer prime
real estate, other areas also work well. Consider areas
where customers might need to wait. This includes not
only POS areas, but also the pharmacy waiting area,
and where lines naturally form at checkout. If there is
a store sale or in-store promotion that garners a lot of
interest, consider merchandising impulse items adjacent
to those products. Ultimately you want to focus on
areas of the store where the customer isn’t preoccupied
with their intended shopping list.
KEEP IT FRESH
Successful impulse merchandisers will tell you that displays need
to be kept fresh and new. If a customer visits your store monthly
and sees the same displays, you’ve lost the opportunity to present
new, attractive products to that customer. Rotate displays based
on how frequently an average customer shops your store. If your
average customer is in your store every 30 days, your product
should rotate monthly.
With a little thought and effective impulse merchandising, you can
add significantly to your store’s average basket value and in turn,
your bottom line.
