What is spirituality?—or rabbaniyat, to use the Qur’anic term. It is the elevation of the human condition to a plane on which the mind is focused on the higher, non-material realities of a godly existence. The opposite of spirituality is materialism, a course followed all too often in this world. One who takes this course, giving all his attention to worldly things, or to put it another way, who centres his attention on mere appearances, is regarded as being materialistic. Conversely, one who rises above material things or appearances, who finds his focus of interest in non-material things, is regarded as being spiritual or godly. The latter is one who obeys the injunction of the Qur’an: “Be devoted servants of God” (3:79) or, alternatively, “O people, be godly servants of Allah.”

1. The Animal or Mammalian Self, Commanding to ‘Evil’ (Nafs-e-Ammara)
2. The Guilty Conscious Self (Nafs-e-Lawammah)
3. The Contented Self (Nafs-e-Mutmaeena)
It aims to educate disciples of Sufism in the gnosis of Allah and instruct those who love Allah in manners to be observed in His Holy Court. The document laments that many devotees have strayed from worshipping Allah and become engrossed in their lower selves instead.

It argues that true peace can only be achieved by submitting to God's guidance as revealed in Islam. The key principles of Islam are outlined as covering all aspects of life and providing a proven formula for peace, success, and salvation. The existence of God is argued based on the complexity and order of the universe, suggesting it could not have arisen by chance.
The document discusses the topic of supplication. It defines supplication as a call from an inferior being to a superior being, addressed only to Allah whose power surpasses all. Supplication acknowledges one's helplessness and need for Allah. While one may supplicate for what they see as good, only Allah truly knows what is good. The document outlines appropriate times for supplication, such as during worship, and discusses supplications made in the Quran, by prophets and by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). It cautions against supplicating for evil and affirms that Allah's answer, whether granting a request or denying it, is for one's ultimate good.

It then provides context that before the revelation of the Quran, mankind was in darkness regarding their true status and nature, enslaved by other men and forces of nature. The Quran revealed mankind's true position as masters over creation and destroyed all forms of human subjugation and slavery. It established a just social system where all people are equal. For this reason, Muslims celebrate Eid to commemorate receiving this "charter of freedom" from Allah through the Quran.

Few men realize that with pleasure there is pain, and with pain, pleasure; and as pain is disgusting, so is pleasure, as it is the twin-brother of pain. Both should be turned aside by men whose reason is balanced. Why will not men seek freedom from being played upon?
The sage wants liberty; he finds that sense-objects are all vain and that there is no end to pleasures and pains. When a man begins to see the vanity of worldly things, he will feel he ought not to be thus played upon or borne along by nature. That is slavery.
When one realizes all this slavery, then comes the desire to be free; and intense desire comes. If a piece of burning charcoal were placed on a man’s head, see how he struggles to throw it off.
Similar will be the struggles for freedom of a man who really understands that he is a slave of nature. This is what Mumukshutva or the desire to be free is.
Salman, a Persian man from Isfahan, became interested in Christianity after visiting a church and liking their prayers. Despite his father's religion forbidding it, Salman was drawn to Christianity. Presentation haqiqat-of-muhammad-v2-170913Sadiq Alam
The document discusses the importance of understanding the haqiqat (true essence or inner reality) of Rasulullah Muhammad (peace be upon him). It argues that without recognizing his haqiqat, we cannot properly give him the honor and respect due to him. It explores how Rasulullah was the first thing created by Allah and the light sent to humanity. It also discusses how focusing on Rasulullah's outward human form versus his inner spiritual realities impacted how he described himself. 1. In Islam, God is strictly monotheistic and unitarian - the one and only God who created the universe and controls everything within it.
2. God has many names that describe different aspects of the divine nature, including the all-powerful, all-knowing, ever-living creator and sustainer of the world.
3. While humans cannot fully comprehend God, the Quran provides attributes to help understand God, such as the merciful, compassionate, and forgiving nature of God.
058a - Brother Buddhist, the life is the masterpiece of GodOrdineGesu
1. The document discusses life as the masterpiece of God and discusses how life was conceived and realized by God with all living beings.
2. It notes that the Buddha did not discover that life in the cosmos is God's masterpiece because he was obsessed with suffering, rebirths, illness, old age and death. The Buddha discovered karma but not how it relates to other laws like reincarnation and evolution.
3. The author argues that all meditations done outside of ourselves, like those taught by the Buddha, are a waste of time, and that the answers are within ourselves by fixing our thoughts in our heart where God can emerge to answer questions about life's mysteries.
Cave and the Inscription by Shaykh Abdul Kareem al-Jili (qs)sultans570

It then presents an excerpt from his work "The Cave and the Inscription", which provides a commentary on the Islamic formula "Bismillahi Rahmani Raheem" ("In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful"). The commentary discusses how this formula and its components (namely the letter Ba) represent the essence of God and contain the meanings of the entire Quran and Islamic teachings. It argues that just as the dot is the essence of written letters, God is the essence of all of creation, though distinct from it.

For Muslims, the Holy Qur’an is an inexhaustible and hauntingly beautiful source of guidance, consolation and enlightenment. Above all, it is the very Word of God as revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) and protected for all time against falsification. Muslims’ absolute certainty on this point is often difficult for others to comprehend, however majestic and eloquent the text, even in translation. Shaykh ash-Sharawi, a distinguished contemporary scholar from Egypt, has written a book designed to be read by Muslims and non-Muslims alike. In plain and wholly logical language, ash-Sharawi presents objective and well documented evidence of the miraculous nature of the Qur’an.

3. The essence of the philosophy expressed is that creation is not separate from God but a reflection of God, and that each individual is ultimately the same indivisible Divine Consciousness rather than a physical body.

- The spiritual body is youthful and radiant, with clothing and appearance reflecting one's spiritual development and state.
- Communication is telepathic, beyond language. In heaven, one can instantly understand and experience what others know.
- The only light is from God/Christ, shining through all. More developed spirits see this light directly, while less developed see it as the sun.
- Memory and mind function differently, with memory stored in the soul, not brain. The spiritual world
082a - Do we know what the conscience isOrdineGesu
The conscience is formed through unselfish behaviors, harmonious thoughts, and loving impulses. It corresponds to the level of love and sensitivity shown towards neighbors, the environment, and helping those in need. The conscience allows one to judge their own actions and intentions. It grows gradually through experiences during multiple lives on Earth, where one learns from both positive and negative situations. A well-developed conscience guides actions based on doing good rather than just duty.

True religion is universal love and remembrance of God. All religions ultimately aim to foster love - for God and His creation. However, people have forgotten this fundamental truth and instead focus on superficial differences, sowing division. True saints and sages embrace all of humanity with love, seeing past outward distinctions to the shared essence within. Love is the true religion taught by masters across traditions.
This talk explores the question "What are humans doing?" While many pursue wealth, fame, and worldly achievements, the speaker argues these are not true goals. As humans, our time is brief between birth and death, so we should reflect carefully on how to spend our lives. Real goals lead to well-being and happiness now and in future lives, such as developing wisdom and virtue through spiritual practice. However, most people are mistaken about what really constitutes wholesome and unwholesome actions. A Buddha is needed to teach the difference and awaken us from this ignorance.
This document discusses several key concepts in Islamic faith and practice, including:

2) Islamic teachings are based on the Quran and traditions of Prophet Muhammad which are revealed knowledge from God.
3) Belief consists of doctrinal truths like God's existence and attributes, while practice covers laws and morality.
4) The document then focuses on explaining arguments for God's existence from natural signs and man's own creation. It emphasizes that doubting God is illogical given the evident design in the universe.

The document discusses the makeup of a human being according to spiritual teachings. It states that a man is made up of a divine spirit/spark, soul, and physical, astral, and mental bodies. Within the mental body develops the small self or ego, which is important for evolution though must eventually be overcome. Other parts of a man include the ethereal body and akashic/etheric body. A man has virtues as well as vices. Key terms are defined, such as self, sense of separation, individuality, and conscience. The spirit is the eternal part of a man, while the conscience accumulates through incarnations to form the ego. After death, a man is judged based on good deeds
052a - THE ETERNAL LIFE OF THE MAN IN THE COSMOS AND THEN IN THE COMMUNION OF...OrdineGesu
The document discusses the eternal life of humans and their existence in different planes after death. It states:
1) Humans are not separate from God and are constantly in contact with and fed by God. They will eternally live in communion with God.
2) After completing their evolution through multiple incarnations on Earth and in the cosmos, learning lessons of pain, all humans are destined for eternal life in God.
3) Between incarnations, humans continue their existence in the astral, mental, and akashic planes of the cosmos, consolidating experiences and progressing toward becoming a "superman" or saint to live eternally in God.
Old Testament is a record of life as it proceeds after dissolution but there have been countless number of dissolutions. So imagine the amount of experience that we carry with us. It is a huge record lying in seed form at causal for each one of us. We carry that record with us as conscious faculty of mind.
If you ever have been fully engaged in any social or professional activity, you might have been experiencing a mental state that psychologists define as flow. You are completely involved and you feel enjoyment in the process of the activity. Some might experience this pleasure while engaging in a sport and others might have such an experience while engaged in an activity such as painting, reading, or fishing. For some, this activity involves helping people, animals or plants in one way or another, which relates to the state of the soul introduced in this book called The Eternal Path of Charity. Indeed, during any charity-based activity, you will feel some kind of tranquility in your heart and sometimes, you will even experience tears of inner joy. This means that you are putting the path of your life in the pleasant Eternal Path of Charity. It is should be noted that the purpose of life for human beings and all creatures is to worship Allah (SWT) alone and helping others are the highest acts of worship.
This document provides a brief overview of some key Islamic beliefs:
1) It discusses man's need for the correct creed to guide his faculties towards good and build an ideal society, noting that sound belief in Allah and the afterlife is necessary to avoid evil.
2) It explains that Islam, meaning submission to Allah, is based on strict monotheism - the belief that Allah alone dominates the universe as its Creator.
3) It notes that Islam was the religion of previous prophets like Adam, Noah and Abraham, culminating in the message of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

This document provides a glimpse into Islamic faith by explaining some of its core beliefs and principles in brief chapters. It begins by stating that Islam liberates the human mind and encourages seeking truth. It then discusses six main articles of faith in Islam: belief in Allah, angels, divine books, prophets, the Last Day, and divine destiny. The first and most important is belief in Allah as the one and only God. The document goes on to explain how human nature inherently recognizes Allah as the creator of the vast universe. It asserts that a sound belief in Allah guides people towards righteousness.
Harmony: The joy of 'unity in diversity' beyond apparent duality Divyanshi Chugh
This is the output of a year-long yoga-based research project on Harmony. It consists a literature review from the works of an Indian yogi and psychologist, Sri Aurobindo, as well as the findings from a deep personal inquiry on "harmony" within oneself.
THE QURAN, a book which brings glad tidings to mankind along with divine admonition, stresses the importance of man’s discovery of truth on both spiritual and intellectual planes. Every book has its objective and the objective of the Quran is to make man aware of the Creation plan of God. That is, to tell man why God created this world; what the purpose is of settling man on earth; what is required from man in his pre-death life span, and what he is going to confront after death. The purpose of the Quran is to make man aware of this reality, thus serving to guide man on his entire journey through life into the after-life. The main themes of the Quran are enlightenment, closeness to God, peace and spirituality. The Quran uses several terms, tawassum, tadabbur, and tafakkur, which indicate the learning of lessons through reflection, thinking and contemplation on the signs of God scattered across the world. The present translation of the Quran has been done keeping in mind these very themes.
This collection briefly discusses two aspects of the Qur’an: firstly, its being in itself a proof that it is the Book of God; secondly its complete preservation in its original form, as revealed to the Arab Prophet Muhammad in the seventh century Hijrah. Many revelations had been made by God and committed to writing by His devotees before the advent of the Qur’an. Then what particularly distinguishes the sacred Islamic text from its forerunners? It is not just that it is complete and the other revealed books incomplete. To categorise the sacred scriptures in this way would amount to discriminating between the Prophets themselves which is certainly not right.
This book comprises excerpts from the Qur’an,
arranged under relevant headings. It provides an
introduction to Islam which is derived directly from
the original, revealed source. No interpretation or
commentary has been added.
The theme of this book – the good life – is taken
from the following verse of the Qur’an:
Be they men or women those who believe and
do what is right, We shall surely endow with
a good life: We shall reward them according
to their noblest actions (16:97).
The meaning of the “good life” mentioned in this verse is clear from the phrase “according to their
noblest actions.” A good life is a life of good actions.
A commentator of the Qur’an, ad-Dahhak, has
defined it as “being content with an honest living
and serving God in one’s life.” This is the meaning
that the Companions of the Prophet and their
followers generally inferred from the phrase. To believe in God and implement His
commandments is to qualify oneself for His
succour. God bestows multiple blessings on a
person who lives a life of faith and righteousness.
He enables him to experience the joy of closeness to
God in his worship; to settle day-to-day problems in
a divinely-inspired manner; to deal with friends
and foes in an equally honest-to-God way, God
guides him on the straight path. He in turn always
seeks God’s pleasure and nothing can turn him
away from this aim. The Qur’an has given a clear exposition of the
theoretical and practical nature of the good life. The
verses which have been selected for this book
describe various fundamental aspects of this life in
the Qur’an’s inimitable style. These passages thus
provide both a description of the good life and an
authentic example of how it should be lived.
The root cause of terrorism and its solutionDabeer Nastar
Once people obtain peace, it opens opportunities to strive for ideals and attain justice constructively. The root cause of terrorism is an ideology of violence that must be countered with an ideology of peace based on Islam's original sources. The Prophet Muhammad's example of accepting all conditions in the Treaty of Hudaybiyya without violence gave his followers time to consolidate peacefully. This shows that Islam's method is completely peaceful.

This anthology of articles by Maulana Wahiduddin
Khan is designed to illustrate the science of life
which the author has derived from one of the basic
principles of the Qur’an: “Every hardship comes
with ease.” (94:56). In his view, failure in life is a
common occurrence, but that coupled with a
positive attitude, it can be transformed into success.
Failure, on the other hand, coupled with a negative
attitude is again failure. The author gives examples
from daily life. Supported by relevant quotations
from the Qur’an and the sayings of the Prophet
Muhammad, to show that there is no end to the
possibilities of success in life for the individual who
can take a lesson from failure. He also cautions that
life’s tribulations must be faced with patience,
perseverance and compassion.
All the articles in this anthology have appeared
from time to time in Al-Risala.
The Prophet Muhammad : A Simple Guide To His LifeDabeer Nastar
This book not only describes the life of the Prophet
Muhammad but also analyses in depth the message
conveyed to us by his life.
The author lays enormous emphasis on the fact that
the Prophet Muhammad went out of his way to
follow a policy of peace throughout his life,
contrary to the misconception that a significant part
of his life was spent on warfare.
The Prophet Muhammad was supremely successful
at both the religious and secular levels. The
exemplary life he lived can serve as an unfailing
guide to right thinking and right living even in this
modern age.
1) The document discusses the importance of finding comfort and repose in marriage through mutual understanding and support between spouses. It notes marriage allows two souls to unite and accomplish great feats together that solitary individuals cannot achieve alone.
2) A successful marriage requires rational management rather than being led by emotions alone, as spouses are non-blood relatives. The relationship benefits from principles like non-interference, understanding differences, and maintaining calm during conflicts.
3) Both spouses have an important role to play - the man in administration and the woman in support. But these roles are based on natural capabilities and needs of the family unit, not superiority or subordination between the partners.
The name of this book is taken from a verse of the
Qur’an, the full text of which is:
Be they men or women those, who believe
and do what is right We shall surely endow
with a good life: We shall reward them
according to their noblest actions (16:97).
The meaning of the “good life” mentioned in this

Some thinker has said, ‘A smattering of knowledge
turns people away from God. Grater knowledge
brings them back to Him’. The author concludes in
this book by examining various theories that the
choice humanity have is not between the universe
with God and the universe without God. The real
option is between the universe without God. The
real option is between the universe with God and
no universe at all. Therefore humanity is compelled
to opt for the proposition the universe with God.
Hence it is logical to say l exist, therefore, God exist.
This book proves the existence of God beyond
doubt. After reading it a reader has responded as
fellows?
The theme of this book is evident from its title. Its
purpose is to present Islam as it is, drawing on its
original sources rather than judging it by the later
day interpretations and commentaries or the
practices of present day Muslims in different parts
of the world. A distinction is made between Islam
as presented by the Prophet Muhammad, may
peace be upon him, and his Companions
(information about which is available to us in the
Qur’an and the sunnah) and Islam as represented by
later Muslim generations—both in theory and
practice. This is what we call the scientific
approach.
We are living in the age of the media. Before the
advent of the modern media there were large
numbers of people in the world who knew nothing
of Islam. With the invention of the printing press
and now the electronic media it is difficult to find
today a single person who is unaware of it.
But there is a clear-cut difference. In previous ages
it happened that wherever Islam spread people were so impressed with it that most of them
accepted it as their religion. That is why today we
find more than one billion Muslims throughout the
world. Strangely enough the present day publicity
given to Islam has produced only a negative effect.
People are now generally allergic to Islam rather
than being interested in it.
In previous centuries when Islam was introduced,
people used to say: Yes, “Mr. Islam welcome to
you!” Now when Islam is presented to them they
say: “No thank you.” Why is there this difference?
The answer is very simple. In previous centuries
Islam was introduced to the people of the world
through its scriptures, as it is—without the slightest
change in its original message. Whereas in modern
times, Islam is being introduced through the
negative practices of certain Muslims as reported by
the media.
There is a further and more severe problem that of
selective reporting. According to their own criteria
the media is interested only in ‘hot’ news, although
so much ‘soft’ news is available about the Muslim
people. Because of their ingrained professionalism, they do not allow this ‘soft’ news to find its way
into their columns of their broadcasts.
Islam is the religion of nature. If it were to be
presented in its original form, people would turn to
it quite naturally. For example, when a recently
converted American by the name of Gary Miller
was asked why he had converted to Islam, he
replied: “I didn’t convert to Islam I have rather
reverted to my original religion.”
Unfortunately, a section of Muslims is engaged in
violent and aggressive activities, wrongfully
indeed, in the name of Islam. It is such news as,
through the media, has a great impact upon the
general public and creates serious
misunderstandings. People have come to take Islam
as a militant religion. Since modern man is in search
of peace, he finds no appeal in a religion which, as
presented by the media, is one of hatre
For some time now there has been a need for an
introduction to Islam, presented in simple and
concise language, which might provide children
with fundamental religious instruction and also be
useful to adults who want to understand the
teachings of Islam.
By the grace of God a book of this nature has now
been compiled. It consists of five parts, the names of
which are as follows: The Way to Find God, The
Teachings of Islam, The Good Life, The Garden of
Paradise and The Fire of Hell.
In making the Prophet Muhammad the
greatest figure, and consequently one of the
most resplendent landmarks in human
history, God has bestowed his greatest favour
on mankind. Whoever seeks guidance cannot
fail to see him, for he stands out like a tower, a
mountain on the horizon, radiating light like a
beacon, beckoning all to the true path. It is
inevitable that the seekers of truth will be
drawn up to the magnificent pinnacle on
which he stands.
God Oriented life,The path to paradise,The purpose of life,After death,Final destination,What is life, who am i ?,The purpose of life,The message of god,The message of quran,The truth of life,
The document discusses God's creation plan for humanity according to Western philosophy. It states that man seems mismatched for this world based on his unlimited potential and desires that are never fulfilled. However, God created man and this world according to a plan where this world is meant as a test, and those who pass will be rewarded in Paradise after death. The document provides further explanation of Paradise and what is required to qualify, which is acknowledging truth and leading a principled life during the test of this world.

Lição 12: João 15 a 17 – O Espírito Santo e a Oração Sacerdotal | 2° Trimestr...OmarBarrezueta1
The Book of Samuel is a book in the Hebrew Bible, found as two books in the Old Testament. The book is part of the Deuteronomistic history, a series of books that constitute a theological history of the Israelites and that aim to explain God's law for Israel under the guidance of the prophets.

Astronism, Cosmism and Cosmodeism: the space religions espousing the doctrine...Cometan
This lecture created by Brandon Taylorian (aka Cometan) specially for the CESNUR Conference held Bordeaux in June 2024 provides a brief introduction to the legacy of religious and philosophical thought that Astronism emerges from, namely the discourse on transcension started assuredly by the Cosmists in Russia in the mid-to-late nineteenth century and then carried on and developed by Mordecai Nessyahu in Cosmodeism in the twentieth century. Cometan also then provides some detail on his story in founding Astronism in the early twenty-first century from 2013 along with details on the central Astronist doctrine of transcension. Finally, the lecture concludes with some contributions made by space religions and space philosophy and their influences on various cultural facets in art, literature and film.

Lucid Dreaming: Understanding the Risks and Benefits
The ability to control one's dreams or for the dreamer to be aware that he or she is dreaming. This process, called lucid dreaming, has some potential risks as well as many fascinating benefits. However, many people are hesitant to try it initially for fear of the potential dangers. This article aims to clarify these concerns by exploring both the risks and benefits of lucid dreaming.
The Benefits of Lucid Dreaming
Lucid dreaming allows a person to take control of their dream world, helping them overcome their fears and eliminate nightmares. This technique is particularly useful for mental health. By taking control of their dreams, individuals can face challenging scenarios in a controlled environment, which can help reduce anxiety and increase self-confidence.
Addressing Common Concerns
Physical Harm in Dreams Lucid dreaming is fundamentally safe. In a lucid dream, everything is a creation of your mind. Therefore, nothing in the dream can physically harm you. Despite the vividness and realness of the dream experience, it remains entirely within your mental landscape, posing no physical danger.
Mental Health Risks Concerns about developing PTSD or other mental illnesses from lucid dreaming are unfounded. As soon as you wake up, it's clear that the events experienced in the dream were not real. On the contrary, lucid dreaming is often seen as a therapeutic tool for conditions like PTSD, as it allows individuals to reframe and manage their thoughts.
Potential Risks of Lucid Dreaming
While generally safe, lucid dreaming does come with a few risks as well:
Mixing Dream Memories with Reality Long-term lucid dreamers might occasionally confuse dream memories with real ones, creating false memories. This issue is rare and preventable by maintaining a dream journal and avoiding lucid dreaming about real-life people or places too frequently.
Escapism Using lucid dreaming to escape reality can be problematic if it interferes with your daily life. While it is sometimes beneficial to escape and relieve the stress of reality, relying on lucid dreaming for happiness can hinder personal growth and productivity.
Feeling Tired After Lucid Dreaming Some people report feeling tired after lucid dreaming. This tiredness is not due to the dreams themselves but often results from not getting enough sleep or using techniques that disrupt sleep patterns. Taking breaks and ensuring adequate sleep can prevent this.
Mental Exhaustion Lucid dreaming can be mentally taxing if practiced excessively without breaks. It’s important to balance lucid dreaming with regular sleep to avoid mental fatigue.
Lucid dreaming is safe and beneficial if done with caution. It has many benefits, such as overcoming fear and improving mental health, and minimal risks. There are many resources and tutorials available for those interested in trying it.

SPIRITUALITY IN ISLAM
What is spirituality?—or rabbaniyat, to use the
Qur’anic term. It is the elevation of the human
condition to a plane on which the mind is focused
on the higher, non-material realities of a godly
existence. The opposite of spirituality is
materialism, a course followed all too often in this
world. One who takes this course, giving all his
attention to worldly things, or to put it another way,
who centres his attention on mere appearances, is
regarded as being materialistic. Conversely, one
who rises above material things or appearances,
who finds his focus of interest in non-material
things, is regarded as being spiritual or godly. The
latter is one who obeys the injunction of the Qur’an:
“Be devoted servants of God” (3:79) or,
alternatively, “O people, be godly servants of
Allah.”
To understand what constitutes materialism,
imagine that you come across a palatial house, or
see an attractive car being driven along the street. If
a strong desire is kindled within you to have such
things in your possession, that is a clear indication

4. Spirituality in Islam
Spirituality in Islam
that materialism is a major motivating factor in
your life. One who sees the same things, but
remains unaffected by the notions of luxury that
they convey, and therefore feels no desire to acquire
them, lives in a more rarefied sphere in which
materialism plays no part. He sees no attraction in
the lesser world of material appearances, being
engrossed in the higher realities of the supremely
spiritual life. The truly non-material person is never
influenced by superficialities: his soul exists at too
profound a level of spirituality.
This is true, and without any exaggeration. Those
who live for worldly pleasures believe that
gratification cannot be had except from material
things. But this thinking is due to sheer ignorance.
Worldly pleasure being the only thing they have
experienced, they imagine that for enjoyment they
must depend solely on material things. Had they
experienced spiritual pleasure, they would certainly
have forgotten material pleasure. The pleasure to be
derived from material things is limited in nature
and very short-lived. Whereas spiritual pleasure
may be eternally savoured.

Spirituality in Islam
Eating tasty food certainly gives us a sense of
enjoyment. But it is only when the experience of
eating such food results in an outpouring of
thanksgiving to God that our pleasure knows no
bounds. Travelling in a modern car is also
enjoyable, but the pleasure which comes from a
deep perception of reality, —i.e. the apprehension
of the indescribably unique power of God as
manifested in the world in the form of cars,
aeroplanes and all the other modern amenities
created for man’s comfort—is far superior to that
which one experiences while travelling in a
luxurious automobile.
The materialistic person can find pleasure only in
something which he or she actually experiences. But
the spiritual person lives on a higher plane. For
him, even seeing things in another’s possession
occasions an outpouring from the innermost
recesses of his heart of his gratefulness to God.
Another’s material pleasure transforms itself into a
spiritual pleasure for him as well. A materially-
minded person sees only the creature, while a
spiritually-inclined person sees the splendour of the
Creator through the creature. And it is obvious that

the spiritual riches accruing from the discovery of
the Creator cannot be gained in the discovery of
mere objects of creation.
Furthermore, in the spiritual world there is no great
difference between comfort and deprivation. What
one gains from experiences of material pleasure is
of far less value than what one gains from
experiences of deprivation. The tears of pain
flowing from an aching heart gives far greater
satisfaction than the laughter of happiness. The
greatest source of pleasure is in the remembrance of
God. It is this reality which finds expression in the
following verse of the Qur’an: “It is only in the
remembrance of God that hearts are comforted.”
(13:28)
Here comfort means not just the temporary solace
to be found in everyday convenience, but the real
comfort with its implications of peace of mind that
can stem only from God Almighty. Man by nature
is an idealistic creature. Anything short of ideal can
attract only fitful attention from him, whereas true
and lasting comfort can be achieved only through
the Perfect Being.

Existing at the level of materialism is like
descending into animality. Materialism is, in other
words, a form of shallowness. The real man is one
who discovers the secret of living on the elevated
plane of spirituality. If in materialism there is the
pleasure of laughter, in spirituality there is the
pleasure of pain. If materialism is to live a life of
limitations, spirituality is to live in limitlessness.
THE UNIVERSE—A SOURCE OF DIVINE
INSPIRATION
The universe has been fashioned by God in a way
that it may become a source of spiritual inspiration
for man. According to the Qur’an, it is the quality of
tawassum (15:75) that enables one to find inspiration
in the universe. What is tawassum? It is the ability to
understand the signs of nature. That is, to observe
the phenomena of the universe in order to draw
lessons from them and receive spiritual
nourishment from physical events.
Tawassum is, in a sense, a matter of conversion, on a
parallel with grass entering the body of the cow and
through a natural process being transformed into
milk. Similarly, the truly religious person is like a

divine industry. He is able to convert physical
events into spiritual lessons. He extracts spiritual
nourishment from material things.
The distinguishing feature of the wise people
described in the Qur’an is that, they continuously
derive such sustenance from their environment,
thus maintaining their intellectual and spiritual
well-being. This is elaborated upon in the Qur’an as
follows:
“In the creation of the heavens and the earth, and in
the succession of night and day, there are signs for
men of understanding; those that remember God
when standing, sitting, and lying down, and reflect
on the creation of the heavens and the earth
(saying): ‘Lord, You have not created these in vain.
Glory be to You! Save us from the torment of the
fire, Lord.” (3:191)
A PERSONAL EXPERIENCE
It was Thursday morning, 17th June 1999. I was in
Manchester, England, staying in the house of an
Arab Brother Alaref Ahmad. While I was sitting in
my room on the upper floor, I heard a gentle knock

on the door. When I opened it, I found a child of
about five years of age. It was Qanita, the first-born
daughter of Brother Alaref. She asked in all
innocence and gentleness, “Do you need anything?”
(turidu haja). Perhaps it was her mother who had
sent her, and although this was a simple question, I
was quite overwhelmed by this innocent voice; to
the extent that I could not utter a single word in
reply. This was a normal incident, but in my mind,
it became transformed into a supra-normal event.
Children are like the flowers of God and little
angels. I felt as if God Himself had sent me an angel
to discover and meet my needs.
At this moment, a famous hadith came to mind:
“Your Lord descends to this worldly haven every
day, looks at His servants and says, ‘Is there anyone
who has a need and asks Me, that I may give it to
him?’” (Muslim).
‘Do you need anything?’ was a short question that
came from an innocent soul, but it was enough to
cause a great revolution in my inner being; referred
to by modern scholars as ‘brainstorming.’

For a while, I felt that I could see the whole of the
Universe on the screen of my mind. This was a
great spiritual experience which could not be
expressed in human words. In the beginning, it
seemed as though God, through a little angel, was
saying, “O my servant, do you need anything?”
Then, the matter extended to include the whole
Universe with its Heavens and its Earth.
In fact, it was only a little girl at the door of my
room, asking, “Do you need anything?” but in its
extended sense, it was as if the whole Universe was
asking the same question.
The vast Heaven was saying, “Do you need a
shelter? Here I am to provide you with one, because
God has ordered me to do so.” The gleaming sun
was saying, “Do you need light? I am here to
supply it and transform your darkness into light.”
The majestic mountains were announcing, “Would
you like to be on the highest level in all humanity? I
am here at your service to help you attain that high
position.” The flowing water in the river-beds was
murmuring, “Do you want to have a spiritual bath
to purify your soul? I am here to offer you that.”

And the gusting wind was asking, “Do you want to
tour the Universe to see the wondrous signs of
God? Here is my back for you to ride on to embark
on such a Divine journey.” The trees were
whispering, “Would you like to have a personality
as radiant as ours? We are here to make your wish a
reality.” The fruits on their branches and the crops
in their husks were declaring, “If you crave
nourishment for your intellectual and spiritual life,
we are here to provide you with it.”
While this reel was playing in my mind, I heard
birds chirping, “O servant of God! Here is good
news for you: If you have a need, then God has
made the whole Universe to serve your needs. God
is so generous that He has created the whole of the
Universe to be at your service, day and night. In
addition to this, if you show thankfulness to God,
He will give you what is greater than all of this —
Eternal Paradise in which there will be “...neither
fear nor grievance” (6:48).
Then, the following Qur’anic verse came to mind:
“And He gave you all that you asked for” (14.34).
This means that whatever is needed for Man to live

a good life on this Earth has been prepared in
advance by God, directly and indirectly. Horses, for
instance, were directly created; whereas aeroplanes
were provided indirectly. The travelling of the voice
through the air is an example of direct provision,
while its transmission by means of electronic
equipment is a form of indirect provision. Perhaps,
this is what is meant by the following Qur’anic
verse: “And (He has created) horses, mules and
donkeys for you to ride, and as an adornment. And
He has created (other) things which are beyond
your knowledge” (16:8).
God Almighty says, “O you who believe! Eat of the
good things that We have provided for you. And be
grateful to Allah, if it is Him you worship” (2:172).
This means that God Almighty has created
everything, imaginable and unimaginable; great
and small, in the most perfect form. Then, He gave
all this free to Man. The only price to be paid for
these endless blessings is thankfulness; it is Man's
recognition, from the depths of his heart, that God
is the Giver and Man the receiver.

The Qur’an mentions as examples of God’s
beneficiaries the people of Saba.’ God Almighty
gave them a sign in the, “two Gardens to the right
hand and to the left; (and it was said to them:) ‘Eat
of the provision of your Lord, and be grateful to
Him: fair is your land and Oft-Forgiving is your
Lord’”(34:15). This means that if Man pays the
price—that is, gratitude—then not only will he be
allowed to avail of these blessings, but more
importantly, he will also be rewarded with eternal
Paradise, which is a perfect version of this present
imperfect world of God.
God Almighty bestowed upon Man all these
material things which man needs if he is to live a
good life on this Earth. All these things are silently
conveying the following message: “O Man! Are you
seeking something greater than all this? Do you
want spiritual peace in addition to material peace?
Do you want a world of perfection after this
imperfect world? Would you like to taste the
blessings of God in the world of eternity after you
have tasted them in this ephemeral world? Do you
wish to have all these comforts as a blessing in the
world to come, after you have had them as a trial in

this transient world? Would you like to realize your
full potential after experiencing the limitation of
your capacities in this present world?”
God created a perfect and complete world as an
eternal abode for Man. Then, He wanted to know
who was worthy of inhabiting that eternal world.
For this purpose, He created the time-bound and
imperfect abode in which we are now living. This
life, therefore, is only a test. Man is constantly
under the observation of his Lord. With every
utterance and movement, Man is writing his own
eternal destiny. One who, during his pre-death
period proves himself through his conduct
deserving of that world will, in his post-death-
period, be rewarded with admission into it. Others,
however, will be flung into the Universal junkyard,
that is Hell, condemned for all eternity. So, they will
lose both worlds, the present incomplete world as
well as the next, perfect and everlasting world.
God has revealed Himself in two books—the
Qur’an and the Universe. The Qur’an is a literal
version of God's word, while the Universe, or
nature, is a practical demonstration of it. These two

are the basic sources of spiritual inspiration for a
man who seeks to live a life according to the divine
scheme.
This dual source of divine inspiration is mentioned
in the Qur’an in the following verse: “God is He
who raised the Heavens without visible supports,
then He ascended the Throne. He has compelled the
sun and the moon to be of service, each pursuing an
appointed course; He controls the affairs (of the
Universe); He makes plain His revelations, so that
you may be certain of the meeting with your Lord”
(13:2). So, the Qur’an is like a guidebook. It prepares
the mind so that one may properly understand the
Universe and live in it as desired by God.
So, a mu’min (true believer) has precisely that kind
of prepared mind. When he sees the Universe with
its various parts functioning in an absolutely
coherent manner, he will spontaneously say: “There
is no god but the one God!” and when he examines
it, he will find that there are so many complex
happenings in its vastness. Nevertheless, he finds
that every part of the universe is highly predictable.
With this discovery, he realizes that it is as if God

was suggesting that he himself should have a
predictable character. When he observes that the
various parts of the Universe function with absolute
harmony, he realises that, in like manner, he should
live in complete harmony with society; without
hatred for or malice towards anyone. When he sees
the events of the universe always proceeding
towards a meaningful result, he realises that man’s
life, too, must have a meaningful end. Thus he
exclaims: “O our Lord! You have not created (all)
this without purpose. Glory be to You! Give us
salvation from the torment of Hellfire!” (3:191).
In brief, the universe is a manifestation of the
Attributes of Almighty God. Hence, it is a source of
spiritual nourishment for those who want to lead a
divine life on earth. For them, the whole universe
becomes a great means of their reaching spiritual
perfection. This spiritual development continues
incessantly throughout their earthly life. As the
ultimate result of this life-long developmental
process, they attain that degree of spirituality which
the Qur’an calls the ‘Rabbani soul.’ It is such as these
who, in the life Hereafter, will be told by their most

compassionate Lord: “Dwell in Paradise; you shall
have no fear, nor shall you grieve.” (7:49)
There is nothing mysterious about spirituality in
Islam. It is rather the direct result of the kind of
intellectual development that takes place when a
believer ponders over the Creator and His creation:
he gains something in the process that may be
termed spirituality. The source, therefore, of Islamic
spirituality is perusal and reflection rather than any
sort of mysterious exercise.
That is why the Qur’an rejects asceticism
(monasticism), referring to it as a bida‘a (innovation)
in religion which God did not prescribe for people.
(57:27)
From the Qur’an we learn that, in the very creation
of the universe, the signs of God lie hidden all
around us. A person who is in a state of keen
awareness when he reflects upon the things of the
world comes to see the Creator in the creatures. The
meaning of the creation of the Universe is laid bare
before him. Ultimately, the universe becomes a
permanent source of spiritual inspiration. He is
continuously nourished by it during his worldly

experience, and his observation of the universe
awakens in him latent divine qualities.
The result of this observation and contemplation of
the universe does not result in his shunning normal
life. Far from withdrawing from the world, he lives
in it, participating in all its activities; yet despite his
involvement, he remains aloof. That is to say,
although he fulfills all his duties and
responsibilities, his heart is not attached to worldly
affairs. He appears to live in the world, but he
stands apart from it. Thanks to this state of his
heart, he acquires tremendous spiritual gains. The
Prophet Muhammad, may peace be upon him, says
of such individuals:
“God plants wisdom in the heart of one who
shows disinclination for the world.”
There is life for man in spirituality: this is indeed
the real life for man.
